This was, amazingly, recorded in the one and only take which was supposed to be the dress rehearsal before the final recording, but they sang in one go in such a way that the producers never asked them to do it again. Those background chorus guys can follow the riffs because they are having more than 15-20 years of practice where as main vocalists are experienced almost 35 to 40 years. Yes he is putting his identity. Mr Khan comes from different gharana(lineage) and Mr Amjad sabari comes from different gharana(lineage). Mr. Khan's uncle ustad Nusrat fateh ali khan is considered one of the greatest vocalist ever lived on earth. Similar thing goes for Mr ustad Amjad sabri the his father and brothers called Sabri brothers were very famous singers. They both are recreating this traditional song which was sung together in a mosque byt their fathers together 40 years ago. Now about Mr Amjad not doing riffs it was about styles there is nothing like he couldn't do the riffs it's just the style. And about technique Indian/Pakistani classical singing is all about technique all artist train 10-12 hours a day for 20-25 years then only they establish themselves. Forget about different artists even if these artists sing this song again it will not sound same.. Because Classical music here(India and Pakistan) about set of rules and then creating things on the spot how the mood goes. Music is not performance for these guys it is their prayer. You can see them praying to the god. And it is said that Indian and Pakistani classical music can't be learnt with practice it needs devotion.

Thanks for the explanations. Absolutely correct this is not performance. The singer wants to disappear and surrender to the moment, to divine inspiration. It is hard for Westerners to understand this aspect unless they practice this type of thing. I believe, though, that great artists from all traditions know how to do this type of “disappearing.”

Few things... you missed the lyrics, the video has CC available This type of music is called qawwali. No two performances of the same qawwali is sung in the same way, it is all improvised on the spot. A qawwali concert can last for many hours. Rahat's uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is the greatest artist ever produced in the East, and according to a magazine in America, the fifth greatest artist of all time. This particular poem was written by Amir Khusro after he met his spiritual guide, Khwaja Nizamuddin, for the first time. They were known as Sufis (mystics).

40 years ago, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sahab (Sahab being a respectful term) and Bde Sabri sahab sang this legendry song.. 4 decades later, Nusrat sahab's nephew and Sabri sahab's son came togather and recreated the song that you just witnessed

And as I told you before it’s a kind of passing on the baton where each gets to show of their skills. I mentioned this before in the performance of Abida and Rahat, where it is called “Aalap” or a kind of “Conversation” in literal English. But you are right in saying that as because “Mr. Khan” is a more established and well known singer, he has taken the lead. “Quwali” the form of song where chorus and clapping 👏🏼 are an integral part, generally has all the lead singers do their bit in their own way and then pass it on to the other person to pick it up from where he left.

its simple sir, their are ragas melodic framework and tala rhythmic framework and then riyaz voice culture practice workout all those thing! those frameworks are learnt so as to make a song or a piece your own! like both the vocalists come from different gharanas or lineage so their methods are distinct

Their previous generations used to collaborate on this same track/music albeit in a more classical fashion. Amjad Sabri (in my opinion) has a slightly different style but can’t really match Rahats’ abilities. This is different to previous versions of this song.
