I agree with you that Discovery is Star Trek 100% and it is challenging and maybe groundbreaking. And, I will watch every episode. It is my least favorite Star Trek series. I love them all, more or less. Any Star Trek is better than any other show or movie, of any kind. But, Discovery is too dark, too humorless, too sexless, to make it the escape that I want from Star Trek. There are other franchises that do that kind of thing much better, e.g. The Expanse. re breaking down the barriers between the actors and fans / eschewing "star" culture : That's the way I remember Star Trek conventions in the TNG era and earlier, and even the Nashville _Fan Fair_ in 1985. The ComiCon / FanExpo I went to in 2015 had me appalled with how you had to pay (high prices) for a photo opportunity with any of the actors. And they certainly don't mingle.
