He does. I got to hang out w him & his wife back when she was very pregnant - maybe around 2009.. just incredibly sweet & genuine the both of them. Javier has an extremely powerful & disarming presence in person. One of those that shines far MORE in person than he does on camera… whereas I’d say 98% of Hollywood it’s the other way around in my experience. I was around most of them at one time or another, & when everyone in the room is somebody hugely famous- you see how few of them actually shine or even stand out. This couple did, but especially Bardem.

Franco's was a bona fide fascist dictatorship, one that made it just fine through WWII because Spain did not participate and the US saw him as a good ally in the Cold War. Franco came to power in the 1930s after nationalist forces waged a civil war against a democratically elected leftist government, and won that war with outside military help from the Nazis. He ruled until his death in the 1970s, and his successors were sufficiently weakened to allow the return of democracy. What was ridiculous was that Colbert himself wasn't informed about Bardem's parents, and thought that the bad part about the communist witch hunt in the 1950s was people being _accused_ of being socialists - as if persecuting people were okay if they were actual leftists.
