Ha, im pretty sure Barrett’s Privateers is one of Colbert’s favorite songs(I think he mentioned it in an interview somewhere?) and the look of sheer delight and amazement on his face at 4:00 when Jack White mentioned it is just so endearing. It’s that heart-leaping moment of ‘oh my god someone mentioned that niche thing I’m obsessed with’

And he sang it with Michael Buble, too. Being from Nova Scotia and having MET Stan Rogers, Stephen and Evie really have to come up for Stanfest in Canso. Then off to Sherbrooke, NS!

@@margiesmom4878 great documentary, my only issue is I think Slash would have been a better choice as the “middle” between Jack White and Jimmy Page. When I think of great guitarists the Edge doesn’t immediately spring to mind, however he’s clearly super talented.

I am DELIGHTED-in awe, actually-to have heard a STAN ROGERS tune sung on an AMERICAN broadcast, nearly 40 years after the late, great, BIG guy passed away on a Cincinnati runway (Air Canada 797). Not only was Stan Rogers's demise untimely, but his talent as a lyricist and musician hadn't extended to the popular airwaves anywhere; blessed were/are those who knew his indie-level music, then (and now)! I am old enough to recall my Dad's sadness when Stan Rogers passed away. I remember asking Dad to turn off Stan's "boring" records-both prior and after Stan's untimely passing; at times, I'd make fun of Dad for listening to (what I considered as) "Maritime" music. Dad was not from the Maritime provinces; he was born and raised out west, in British Columbia (small-town, northern BC, at that!). He was introduced to Stan Rogers's music when he began working (as a police officer) in Windsor (then Toronto), Ontario; among RCMP members from the Maritimes. Stan Rogers: was from HAMILTON, Ontario. His mother was from Nova Scotia. He sang about blue-collar life and matters. When my Dad passed away in June 2006 (at 56, as a consequence of C-PTSD): we scattered some of his cremains into a lake, with ... Stan Rogers music, playing loudly in the background. I hope both men have met and become familiar with each other, at The Big Beer Parlour in the Sky. Irony: Jack White is from Detroit. Detroit, MI: across the river from Windsor, Ontario🇨🇦-where my Dad met & married Mum, and I was born.

I didn't know the song Barrett's Privateers, but I had to look it up thanks to this video and thanks to your comment. What you wrote here was so lovely and moving that I read it out loud to my beau. He said, "Yes! Stan Rogers! He's one of the best songwriters ever. I heard about his music from Danny Quinn* who covered Stan's song 'Lies' back in the '90s and early 2000s. Whenever Danny would play it at a show, the whole place would be silent just to take it all in. From that song, I just had to learn who Stan Rogers was and devour his music." (*Danny Quinn was full-time working musician who primarily played the Irish bar circuit from roughly Connecticut down to the Delaware beaches, here in the midatliantic US. Danny had a really dedicated following; never made it super-big, but at least he was able to make a living just by playing out. He also died way too young from a brain aneurysm outta nowhere, sadly before I ever got to see him play live. He has a bunch of albums, and here's a link to Danny Quinn's version of Stan Rogers' "Lies" if you're interested (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b36bqn6Ch9xkl68 ). Danny does it in C (where Stan does it lower in G) and it's such a pretty version. Both are glorious and a punch to the gut. I hope Danny is also at that bar with your dad and Stan.) Your dad not only had great taste, but he clearly raised a kind, thoughtful, considerate human and it's an honor to share a planet with you. Thank you for being awesome.

Thank you ro sharing your personal story. It shows that both your father and you were and are great human beings. My Stan Rogers story is much more lightweight. I was at, of all things, a science fiction convention in the filk (music of science fiction fandom) room when a group called Windbourne showed up. One of the people in the room requested that they play something. The song they did was "Lies." One of the lines in the song is "She'd pass for 29 but for her eyes." They had started the song just before midnight; while they were singing, I literally turned 30 (yes, it really was my birthday!). I knew that Colbert had gotten into Stan Rogers during the pandemic, but I had no idea that Jack White was into him! What's most amazing about Stan Rogers is how his music has stood the test of time. Even his "White Collar Holler" is still relevant!

Nah. Scripting each word wouldn't make sense. Ideas and prompts can be pre-written and discussed, but the conversation didn't flow like a scripted segment. Believable that they discussed previously what the segment was about. Ludicrous to suggest the entire conversation was written out for them, wasting time memorizing and practicing lines. You know when stuff's truly all the way scripted, words and all - because when it's delivered by the guests, and even by Colbert, it's slightly mechanical and he's looking at the camera - because it's on the PROMPT to read out, not memorize.

I must've been a fan of Jack for 20 years now (omg), and he's even funnier than I realized 😂 I remember when he was on barter bros or American pickers or something and had them go through the extreme hassle of getting him a taxidermied white elephant, and when they arrived with it, he said "I don't like it, take it away" 😂 then laughed and thanked them and took his elephant. Brilliant 😂

Fuckin love that episode! I forget - did Jack buy it straight up or was there a trade involved? I seem to remember one of those selfie photo booths (i could TOTALLY be making that up in my head).

A Nova Scotia twofer on Late Show this week. Jack White whose family is from Cape Breton, NS and Ethan Hawke who has a place up the Eastern Shore. And who played Everett Lewis, the husband of Maude Lewis in the film Maudie. A great, moving film. He likes her artwork. Ethan and Maya Hawke and Uma Thurman. The daughter of Bob Thurman. To think they might all be together now this summer up NEAR Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia! On the Eastern Shore, back of Dartmouth going north.
