Marvin MacLeod No, it's cool, I wasn't berating you or anything... I understand it was just a figure of speech, and that you might not know about SK's sordid past... the sad thing is that after the van ran him down in 1999, he was denied adequate doses of morphine and other drugs so that he wouldn't get addicted again (which I think was a criminal thing to do)...

The importance of Stephen King to the world cannot be understated. His stories have found an audience almost everywhere books are read. In doing so he has changed millions of lives by allowing his readers to fall in love with books. When I was a young boy, my mother had a library full of his novels. I remember how excited she became whenever her beloved Stephen released a new one. Eventually I picked up the first one I read, The Stand, and it changed my life. There were countless nights I spent reading in bed with the lights off fearing a cold, dead hand would reach out from underneath and drag me down into a dark place filled with demons. I fell in love with reading and moved on to countless other writers. Yet, throughout the years I have always returned to Mr. King's work, excited at the new place his imagination is ready to take me. For this I am truly thankful.

Thank you for sharing that. I, too, basically credit him fully with my love of reading. Started with my mom having a few books (The Stand, IT, Rose Madder) and I would voraciously tear through them. I truly believe it helped my developing mind, imagination, and vocabulary. He always pulls me in!

+AngryJT The books always outlive their critics. The works of Chandler, Kafka, Lovecraft, and Tolkien all outlived literary critic Edmund Wilson's scathing opinion of them. Edmund Wilson is barely remembered as a footnote because of them. There is only one critic of the arts that counts, and that is time.

steve conn With Chandler, he was dismissed a "pulp" writer in his day. It's can be odd who ends up in the canon as there are plenty of genre writer in there. Time is the only real judge. The dust hasn't settled on King's works so neither of us have a proper perspective.
@steveconn

reptomicus Anyone with any taste can already see he churns out silly plots with generic characters (the raving preacher again? How original) and writes like an eighth-grader on Redbull. Chandler is practically Shakespeare in comparison.

Mr. King is not just a Master Storyteller, when you get into his works, your mind is swept away, to another place and time. You see the world from someone else's point of view, and of course share in the characters fears, loves, hate, sorrows. And when I close a book after reading a while, for a split second it's like - woo oh right - and you are back in your life. What he can do with his short stories has no comparison. What I have read, that he can do with just a few pages of writing, has no comparison!

I don't get this rep of Stephen King as a horror master. I love his books, but so few of them are out and out horror. Maybe "Salem's Lot, "IT" and "Carrie," but most of his books are Fantasy "The Stand," the entire Dark Tower series, and "The Talisman, as an example. Also there are dramas with elements of Magical Realism like "The Green Mile," and straight stories like "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." Again, love him, but master of horror, no.
