Exactly! I loved Cuomo's comment. It was refreshing to hear honesty for once. White Americans in this country enslaved other humans for hundreds of years and 2 years ago voted for a White supremacist as president. No the country was never "great". It was financially prosperous due to the enslavement of African Americans.

PrettyGirlKarsynRose YEAH REALLY. When Stephen went on his little knee-jerk patriotism rant in response (and didn't even play the FULL CLIP that added context), it felt like I was watching something off of Fox News. Cuomo will probably be punished for this, and honestly, I didn't like him a whole bunch in the first place, but he spoke the honest-to-god truth. Too bad the truth doesn't sell these days.

Listen to their Pod Save America podcast and then exploring other podcasts in their Crooked Media line-up. You'll be surprised how interesting some of these "nerdy" subjects can be when you're not just learning about politics to cram for an AP Government test! Then branch out further to other podcasts like "The Weeds," "Today Explained," and "The Ezra Klein Show" from Vox Media. Then "Stuff You Should Know" and other shows from the folks at How Stuff Works. And a lot of great podcasts from NPR member stations, like "This American Life" and "Embedded." Oh, and my favorite..."Reveal" has some mind-blowing exposes. Just off the top of my head!

I was so disappointed in Stephen, as sharp as he is, on missing the mark with the Cuomo quote. When he mentioned it again in this interview I literally cringed cause his narration had the same tune. You can't imagine how happy I was to hear Tommy Vietor give an honest view of what the statement truly represents. More so, his anxiousness in wanting to answer the question. You can see from his expressions that he felt Stephen being totally off and missing the mark on this. THANK you for that Tommy.

I dont have an issue with Cuomo speech. Hes not wrong we arent great, we never were. We are looking at events through nostalgia glasses pretending everything was great and ignoring all the negative aspects that our culture endured. We really have to stop this grandstanding because it's only going to limit our progress into making this country actually great.

Depends on your definition of great. I think it's pretty great. Yeah we're like number 30-40 arguably as far as best countries to live in but considering there are almost 200 countries... That's not that bad. It's good... Maybe not great but almost lol. So I guess it just depends on the individual. For example if you're black and or live in one of those shitty neighborhoods you might find in Alabama lol... You would probably think this place sucks balls. Me? I don't have that problem. So yeah... Every country no matter how bad always has some unfortunate equality... Or a lot of unfortunate equality. It's complicated lol. Not so much black and white. But I hear what you guys are saying... We have some seriously stupid problems that need fixing and a lot of them are actually pretty easy to solve if it weren't for corrupt and rich assholes keeping good things from happening...

Well now, yeah. One _could_ say that the United States has always had the seeds of greatness and the _potential_ for greatness. One _could_ point out, over and over again, that there is grounds for optimism _this time,_ just like there was _last time_ and the time before _that,_ and the time before _that,_ but sooner or later, if you have any recollection, you're going to pick up on this pattern and wonder just what it is that keeps dashing your optimism.

Well, we did eventually free the slaves and, at least on paper, grant them citizenship and the vote (although not the 1st country to do that). And we granted women the right to vote (not 1st there either). The civil rights movement isn't finished, but clearly improvements have been made. And any two people now have the right to marry, even though there's no national protection from being fired after a LGBT couple gets married, or for single LGBT folks. So, maybe not great, but certainly cause for cautious optimism.

FridgeProductionsInc Well I’m African-American and I cringe when I hear how wonderful the past is, and I know people don’t understand. I’ll watch a video or program and I’ll see I’m not represented. I was watching a video about how wonderful the sixties were and I only see it as a tumultuous era. The experiences they were sharing were not my experiences and after a while I stopped watching. I cannot become engaged when the subject is how wonderful past decades have been in this country. My expectations for the future is hopeful because I see more awareness than yesteryear.

Right! People are so butthurt to hear that their country isn't fucking amazing. What a bunch of arrogant turds, it must be cognitive dissonance to justify to themselves why they stay in it. "I'm going to die because I don't have healthcare, but at least I'm free to die!" Jesus Christ.

Sharon Smalls I can't imagine how that feels like. Sorry to hear that. I don't get why people see Americas past in such a glorious light. It was great in a lot of ways and it is great in a lot of ways today. In other ways it wasn't. Also for some people it wasn't great overall. I just cringe at how badly Americans seem to need to see their country as the best in the world when it was never that in a lot of ways (in other it was and still is). Doesn't sound like a lot of confidence to me.

Zenny Abanales - "People are so butthurt to hear that their country isn't fucking amazing. What a bunch of arrogant turds" The sad part is those turds don't bother to push it to become amazing :(

Pod Save America, Pod Save the World, Pod Save the People, Lovett or Leave It, Hysteria, With Friends Like These, Majority 54, and Keep It are all podcasts under their Crooked Media company. I also recommend Vox Media's Today Explained, The Weeds, and The Ezra Klein Show. Also Embedded and Reveal. Incredible journalism.

I think as an immigrant in this great country, I would have burst out clapping when Mr. Colbert said "You could say that we're not going to make america great again because america has always had the promise of greatness. You know, in its founding documents america has always held the seeds of greatness for every generation to water...". A salute to you, Or to the writer who wrote it.
