Jon Stewart gets panelists to have some of the most real conversations. The kind of honest talks that we all should be having way more often than we do now. If you like history and world politics, watch the 1942 USDA video *Hemp for Victory* which legalized "Marihuana" to save the world from fascism and genocide during World War II. The film was hidden from your parents and grandparents for almost 50 years so that everyone who was born after World War II could be brainwashed with the lie that "Marijuana will destroy America." There is an official US government link to the film from the US National Archives. It became public in 1990. The film today is the key to repairing the supply chain, reducing pollution, replacing fossil fuels, ending deforestation and stopping climate change. Your beloved media personalities are contractually obligated to never talk about this because it would change the global economy away from oligarchic control of limited resources.

That was an AWESOME show, rivaling the best of JS's work. Thanks to Jon, "Side" John, "Middle" John, and the third panelist for their candid, brilliant, authentic spitting of fire. My view of why we are at this point has more to do with the effects of late stage capitalism on us. We all work for money. But who's getting paid the most? How do billionaires with the most money to spend, deploy their cash? And how do they get the most bang for their bucks from the media? At the end of the Reagan presidency, Ronald let Rupert Murdoch start his conservative media empire, Fox News. To allow them to do new things, they did away with the practice of "fair and balanced" journalism. If you do this innocuous thing, then the end result of it will be the end of American democracy. We didn't know this at the time. Now we do. Since the end of the Eisenhower Administration, the tax rates paid by businesses and their well-to-do owners have gone down dramatically. We have billionaires like Donald Trump who frequently get away with paying no taxes. Same for many of the other billionaires like Musk, Gates, Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg, The end result of this trend is that the billionaire class now has more money, power, and influence than the weak Federal government. A billionaire weasel like what's-his-name can pay his army of lawyers, his army of aides, and his army of fawning government officials to do whatever he wants. Unfortunately, there's no way to put this genie back into the bottle once it escapes. What's-his-name is already ruling by divine fiat. He's trashed the DOJ, the FBI, the congress and the senate, brutally thrashed the media, and completely discombobulated his inept political opponents. He's turned the people against each other, and turned the country upside down. The only thing he needs to do now, is declare victory, accept the fealty of the military and the police, and build a new hurricane proof capital city somewhere in Florida close to West Palm Beach. Does anyone know what he'll call his new country yet? Foxlandia, Freedonia, or Trumpedelphia? The revolution has already occurred people, and it was televised! So far it's the billionaires one, and the people nothing.

Basically, the billionaires now have more money, power, and influence than the government so they get to do whatever they want without ANY control over their most embarrassing and egregious behaviors. We're lucky we can still chirp about this stuff on the web, or read about it in our few remaining newspapers. Wasn't democracy great though when it existed? At least we can remember it fondly. I don't know much about how congress works behind the scenes so I am appreciative of Jon giving kudos to legislative aides. It's been obvious in the last 5 years how uninformed many congress people are and it's reassuring that bright minds are doing the research and trying to inform who they are assigned to.

I can’t help but feel like a large source of the problems with the media originated when we changed from the news being a public service to requiring the news to be profitable.
@mrsb502 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, the business models are a massive contributor. There used to be more jobs and time set aside for research and fact-checking when accuracy and reliability were valued over speed and convenience. As soon as people became accustomed to getting news for free online, the business models of print and TV news fell apart. There have been some benefits in terms of accessibility and the removal of some barriers to publishing, but I find it hard to argue that the dissolution of quality standards, the loss of local news outlets, and the proliferation of disinformation silos are an acceptable cost.

You guys regard a differing perspective as misinformation. You're obsessed with narrative control. For example, if I said Christians and jews eradicated every ethnicity in Europe you would call me a conspiracy theorist and a liar, but I simply have a different perspective on the same facts. If you were to assert that jews were forced to collect taxes, I wouldn't assert that you are engaging in misinformation, I would assert that youre dumb and racist

The main problem is the corporatization of news. It's all about ratings which brings in money so news isn't about the news anymore, it's about personalities.
@waynelondon97762 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you and would add that viewers are looking to be entertained by the news media and rather than taking in “facts” and making their own decisions and formulating their own thoughts about what is going on in the world.

Another real conversation. Thanks so much for keeping the Socratic method alive in these new Dark Ages. At 24, I left the USA in 1987 and got a world-class Masters degree for the princely sum of $300/ year at a public university in France, a country that has one of the highest levels of taxation in the world. Many of my very successful American friends envy my lifestyle. Why? Because in this country, and in practically every other developed nation, we get real value out of our tax dollars, not just bloated budgets for armed forces, quasi-military law enforcement and the privatized prison industrial complex. Affordable health care, affordable education, affordable mass transit, and a social safety net that continues to reflect basic values of empathy and solidarity, despite the cases of abuse and, increasingly, frontal, ideological attacks on institutions that create and uphold the middle class: these are the staples of advanced capitalist democracies. What dismays me is the creeping “Americanization” of European political discourse. The thin edge of the wedge has been the UK since Thatcher came to power over forty years ago. More recently, we see authoritarian governments in Hungary and Poland aping this “populist” anti-people ethos, with the threat of other countries following suit, in France, Sweden, Italy and who knows where else. Bill Maher gets it right when he says, “Human beings just aren’t good people.”

Thx guys; excellent conversation, right-on points. I hope D’s watch/listen to this show/podcast. For me, the split intensified just after 911: “You’re either with us or against us.” - all or none, black or white, the ‘right’ way or the highway, no room for conversation, tolerance negotiation, truth or unity, just pick a side.

Thank you all collectively for your clarity on the issues presented. I struggle in finding a way to maintain an intelligent discourse with any right leaning individuals or institutions - when it comes to the actual moment to speak it's like "Geez - where do I start ?" Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in this predicament and mapping things out for any future encounters with presenting my views in an understanding way to a set of individuals that refuse to even consider any other views than their own narrow minded restrictive ideas. Thank you for your efforts - keep it coming loud and clear !

Another great show-discussion. I remember back in early 1970's living in DC working in Cheverly MD reading the Parade mag I think, where they had distilled short paragraphs highlighting news of the day. I remember thinking , people will just read this and move on, never taking the time to read the full story, follow-up on footnotes or look at companion pieces. I seriously entertained making a newsletter myself based on my nursing journal articles. I was surprised hardly anyone I worked with subscribed let alone read these publications. Of course I didn't have Publisher then, so it was years later that I did do a newsletter for a time. Yeah, people like it distilled, no questions asked. Started watching Fox with Geraldo and his legal coverage of the OJ trial, and later Jon Benet Ramsey. Now Fox just has robots spewing out the same talking point of the day..over and over. I used to think they got a cash incentive based on the number of times they said it. Dana Perino was perplexed that a "secret" document could be so all fired important! She worked in the White House, signed confidentiality oaths did she not? Has her brain turned to mush? We have successfully dumbed down rather than created a truly educated electorate.

Idk... They're clearly very smart people, but they read to me as being far too inside the system to accurately assess some of the biggest issues with the system. I'm sure they have great commentary on certain issues, but anything about the issues with the Democratic party, the media, corruption, the excesses of big money, and other issues that are at the core of the fraying of our democracy, it seems they are afraid to levy serious structural critique and instead defer to personality politics and naive beliefs in the inherent goodness of institutions.

Interesting discussion. I'm sure many watching this saw the clips of Mick Lynch from the railworkers' union 'owning' the media here in the UK. He has become something of a celebrity here for his straight 'no bullshit' answers that cut through the usual anti-union nonsense the media tends to concentrate on. For me this shows there is a craving for authentic, working class and left wing voices. He explains his ability to cut through the rubbish as being forged in the canteens of workplaces where he's been accountable to members with acute BS detectors. We need mechanisms to promote these sort of people into politics. Here in the UK this used to be via the unions but they've have been decimated over the last 30-odd years. There is a want for this sort of discourse but as with the Democrats in the US, the Labour Party in the UK shies away from it, perhaps has lost the ability to talk about politics except as narrowly defined by the corporate media. Not only is there a want for people to hear voices that represent their intersests I believe there is a need because without them people turn to populist demagogues.
