The Mac Machine was a regional name used by Philadelphia based banks in the 70s when they first came out. The word Mac stood for money access card. They were because of the new bank debit card that the banking industry built them. Also so people could get money out of their account 24/7 , 365 days a year.

A Mac Machine is what the regional banks about 25+ years called their ATM network. A Mac card was usable for some ATM machines. I used the term Money Access Center just yesterday forgetting that I should have said ATM to the person not located in the USA.

Wit/witout refers to onions not cheese. In a cheesesteak order you say the name of the cheese u want then follow it with if u want onions or not. "Can I have Cheese Wiz Wit" aka a cheesesteak with cheese whiz and onions. "Provolone witout" aka cheesesteak with provolone cheese and no onions

Throughout the 1990s, every ATM in Pennsylvania had a big MAC sign on top of it. Nowhere did they say ATM. And the card you used said MAC, Money Access Card on it. Didn't ATMs across the country have a large MAC banner over them?
@EmpathyAbounds
@EmpathyAbounds Жыл бұрын
They didn't. I spent a lot of time between Philly and the DC area. They weren't called Macs here. (DC area) I spent a lot of time converting my speech depending upon where I was. When in Philly, I called it Mac. Back home, I called it ATM. I was around to see Most as well here in the DC area but it's been ATM longer.

To add some clarity...in the 70's Philly's First Pennsylvania Bank was the national testing ground for Money Access Centers or MAC Machines--which everyone else calls ATM's. Most of their branches in the greater Philly area had them--which is why "ol heads" in Philly & South Jersey say "tap Mac".

@@SquiLLs cause honestly there's no rules about how to spell slang. Like it feels way more intuitive to type "that's my joint right there!" because that's technically the word we're *saying* but it just happens to be pronounced jawn. Now it's well known enough for corporate entities to put the word on billboards and ads and what not, but do you think they know we were actually saying joint all these decades? Same thing about how the internet still can't figure out what exactly salty is supposed to mean after all this time. lol!

@brandydouble338, I read your comment to my daughter who is a Pittsburgh public school teachers. She confirms what you wrote and told me that when she's around kids at school and casually says that she has to "go to the mac machine", they don't understand what she means. But they understand her when she consciously switches her referent and says she has to "go to an ATM". But her ten year old daughter (my granddaughter) knows both terms for these machines, partly because "mac machine" is the term that her mother still uses and that is what I always call them. Btw, , none of us have ever heard anyone in Pittsburgh say that they are going to "tap the mac". I don't think that saying was ever a Pittsburgh thing.
