Yeh that guy pissed me right off, I took the effort to explain vocal growls and vibrato and how Jimmy didn’t scream but he just kept slamming me in the face so I deleted it all and blocked him 😂 Choir girl is about a man watching his girlfriend go off to have an abortion- the white hospital gown makes her look like a choir girl. The band is on the girls side, they’re expressing her loneliness and what the couple are going through, the guilt etc. No one talked of such things back then so it was controversial.

Dr.Kap I feel ya. I’m certain there is a broad and targeted attack going on at the moment that is directed at Australians online. I’ve noticed over the last two years that when anyone comments on anything that’s good about Australia there are viscous, abusive trolls laying in wait. I believe it’s a concerted effort at demoralising and dividing us and it’s definitely targeted. At first I thought I was just being paranoid but it’s happening so often I don’t anymore. Stay frosty, stay united and above all keep speaking truth to trolls.

Aaaaaw....Choir Girl. Such a sweet, sad song about someone supporting their friend going through an abortion😢 Suffer little children, send that little child to me....is about the baby going to heaven, being received by God. A twist on a bible verse. One of Chisel's early songs. This...and 'Forever Now' were the songs that put them out there. Reached the masses, so to speak.❤❤❤❤👍👍🇭🇲🇭🇲

For all the subtlety he put into the song, Don Walker is certainly a songwriting genius. Several of Cold Chisel's songs got banned on Australian radio, particularly Khe Sanh for some overt sex and drug references, but Choirgirl sailed right past the censors on radio stations owned and operated by the Australian branch of the Catholic Church, even though the meaning in the song is right there when you take the time to think it through.

In case no-one's mentioned it already, the 'Suffer little children / Send that little child to me' is a reference to a Bible verse: 'Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.' It's been used in the past to console parents who have lost children, to convince them that the child has gone to a 'better place'. I think I first heard it at a funeral for one of my schoolmates. Great choice for a first-listener reaction. I was lucky enough to see Chisel live a few times, and they were simply spectacular. Never a note out of place.

I believe send the little child to me is about the abortion of the baby and it’s soul going to Jesus. She was an unmarried pregnant young woman who was being forced to terminate the pregnancy as in those days they were given three options 1. Get married 2. Be sent to a convent for 9 months a d forced to adopt out their baby or 3. Be forced to terminate her pregnancy by parents as BF wasn’t prepared to marry her. It was an emotional issue and highly controversial as it wasn’t spoken about back then. Dressed in the white surgical gown she looked innocent as a choir girl and crying like a refugee - she had nowhere else to turn. It’s my all time favourite Chisel song and when you see how gorgeous a young Jimmy Barnes was when he smiled you can TOTALLY understand he was the idol of many young women in Australia during the late seventies early eighties and continues to be adored. Even in his sixties he continues to set hearts a flutter. Thank you for appreciating the brilliance of Jimmy’s voice and Cold Chisel. Without question Australia’s favourite rock band albeit not known in USA. They went there to launch during East but refused to adjust their lyrical content and appearance to meet USA music executives expectations and came home where Jimmy penned You’ve Got Nothing I want. It was his stick it response to them.

Facts. The American and British record companies were terrified of the Australian music scene as they knew full well if they got air play on radio they were gonna lose sales to Aussie record labels and artists... it's been proven in umpteen documentaries from that period on music labels. Absolutely criminal Aussie bands were ignored world wide due to not being owned by American or British labels... but hey we got to watch them down the local for $2 so it's not bad I guess.

@@manna6618 Yeah the big record labels didn't control the pubs so bands could reach their audience direct allowing highly political songs to gain popularity. The globalists bought up all the pubs, killed pub rock and put in pokies and ran trivia nights instead. All the while dumbing down the music industry in Australia and OS.

To me it covers the perspective of everyone involved in the abortion. The girl feeling alone and sad even though she has support and has made this decision, the father of the baby feeling helpless in taking away her grief but still tries to support her, the nurse having compassion for her whilst wheeling her to have the procedure and finally the doctor wanting to prevent the suffering of unwanted children by performing this procedure..
@chookinathunderstorm3446

I always thought that the line " Send the little child to me. " was what the doctor ( who Jimmy is singing the part of ) was saying regarding the mother being so young as to still practically be a child herself. Also so young as to naturally be expected to, still be too innocent to recognise the dangerous people in the world " Looking like a choir girl." Also the doctor being "..... a man who handles his responsibilities. " and " never, never, never let her down. " as opposed to the man who picked her up and let her down by getting her pregnant then abandoning her. Also the way a young girl coming into womanhood can easily fall into loving a man "...like a sister " or " ...like an only child. " Sometimes it's the wrong irresponsible selfish type of man and sometimes it's the man who shows genuine responsible, caring concern like the doctor here. The " Suffer little children, send the little child to me." is a reminder of the spiritual religious aspect that divides people as to what side they take regarding their own interpretation of " What Jesus would do." Always loved the soaring quality of this song and the vocals by men who obviously care and are not afraid to speak out about those other innocents who suffer and calling upon men to think about their responsibilities toward those vulnerable ones who come into their range of power.

First single, third album (plus an EP). You really need to listen to the album, East. It will stun you. From the searing opening of Standing on the Outside, to the bluesy Best Kept Lies, to the explosive My Turn to Cry. Some say Circus Animals is their best, I don't know. It's like choosing from your children. They're all bloody good. But East has that commercial polish, that quality of production, the variety of song styles from members of the band. Yet it still captured the volume, the skill and the power of the live band. I don't know, I was changed forever when the needle hit the album on the turntable in 1980 and Standing on the Outside shattered me for life. Mate that is why I watch your work, because you do care, you do appreciate, you look deeper and you don't sit there like a smiling, bopping zombie like some. Keep it up! 😎

This song is so typical of that, no one else was doing songs like this in Oz,: Star Hotel, Four Walls, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Khe Sanh, and Song for Alan. So many of their songs were tackling deep, unpleasant, and unpopular issues of the day and are just as relevant now but Chisel wrapped them up in fantastic music and lyric construction...

Jimmy drank a lot of booze and smoked a lot of cigarettes often on stage ,one in each hand , to get the scratchy voice he has now but it was always what he wanted ,to sound like an old blues singer. The clarity and tone of his old songs is amazing. His newer voice took a lifetime to create. I love both. When this song came out abortion was still illegal in Australia. However there were a lot of what we called Back Yard Abortion’s. They were carried out in not the cleanest of places too say the least and they cost a small fortune to get. There were a lot of desperate girls out there who had these so called Backyard Abortions left many women traumatised as they used no form of medicine given to them for the pain they went through. They were just layed on a table and the abortion was performed and then they were quickly sent on their way. There were also a lot of Girls who because of a Botched Abortion, who were left unable to go on and have children. This also was why their were so many unmarried mother’s who either had to give up their Babies for Adoption or if you were lucky your Parents stood by you because the Government did not recognise you in fact they would have Social Workers at all the hospitals who would guilt these girls into giving their babies up. I was one of the lucky ones my parents gave me the choice and I was able to keep my daughter. Yes I had to go back to work, and my Doctor warned me that seeing as how I was keeping my Baby not too even let a Social Worker through my door and he told the Nursing Staff not to let them come near me. Foolishly they did but I didn’t let them in and when my Doctor found out he really raised the roof in the Maternity Ward. That’s just the way it was and I think Choir Girl was written as a sort of Anthem to Young girl’s who found themselves in this predicament. It seems like a whole life time ago now but there is a case before The High Court right now looking into how the Social Worker’s of the day and how they coursed girls into giving up their Baby’s. So it was a very Relevant Song for the day.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

There was so much child trafficking as well. Nurses would be there waiting for the birth, and the second the child was born they would grab the baby and bolt. Leaving the mother screaming for their child, if they were with it and not delirious by epidural. Many baby's were taken by force with nothing signed. The baby's were then sold for profit by the church for adoption by unwitting couples that couldn't have children.

@@melindatanner5853 Your very welcome, when I wrote it it was very cathartic for me, even though I got to keep my baby. However I will never forget those times and this song is just a reminder of how really bad it could be especially if there was no Shotgun Wedding. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

Hmmm, not sure Donelle. I had 1 at that time and it was legal. It was under the Menhinnet ruling in Vic courts in 1969 which was adopted by NSW and QLD. This song mentions nurses, and doctors. 'Who handles his responsibility'...Few nurses were at backyard jobs. I'm a nurse too btw.

@@ingridclare7411 there was a lot of self righteous and religious nurses back in the day and I don't think they realised it corrupted them and made them the worst kind of evil nurses ever known in the industry. They were not all that way, but there was a lot of really bad nurses. I am also a nurse.

I love that you listen to the lyrics and try and understand them or put your own interpretation on them. I watch another text channel Alex & Andy and they’re ok but the thing that shears shut me with them is they are much more focused on the sound and don’t pay that much attention to the lyrics, even with a song as poetically stunning as Sounds of Silence. You give equal weight to the music, the lyrics and the performance. That’s what I appreciate.

I heard a story a while ago which I think was true that they had a US tour planned when they were quite big here in Australia but the US promoter screwed up somehow and it really tilted the band. They could have been just as big around the world as they were here had their tour not get canned.

How I interpret the lyrics: Looking like a choir girl = she looks innocent i.e. she is quite young. Perhaps early-teens Crying like a refugee = she is beside herself with grief. She feels persecuted and alone One nurse to hold her, on nurse to wheel her down the corridor of healing = a nurse needs to hold her down. Perhaps she is resisting the abortion and being forced by parents to go through with it? They wheel her down the corridor to heal after the procedure. I think he (the male character who's thoughts comprise the lyrics) is there, watching her travel down the corridor, or he is not with her, but imagining what must be happening. Well I've been trying. But she's crying like a refugee = he is trying to heal her with his support, but she is still crying. She is struggling to cope with everything that has happened. Loves me like a sister = they were young friends. Very close; maybe family friends or childhood friends. Perhaps a deep lifelong friendship that blossomed into sexual attraction in adolescence. Loves me like an only child = again, their bond was deep, like family. He is clarifying the depth, almost correcting it from like a sister, to even deeper, like that of a child; a part of one another. He is her only baby and he hers, in a romantic sense. There is no one else for her. They are everything to each other. She's my connection = they have a deep bond. She is the one he feels connected to. A soul-mate perhaps. I hold on and never let her down. Cause she's alone = he will hold on and wait for her to heal. He will stand by her and not let her down because he knows she needs him right now. He may even feel responsible for her pain and thus, more determined to support her, not matter what. And she loves me like an only child = he is reminding himself that she would do the same for him if he needed her. He feels he owes her his loyalty and commitment. Suffer little children = A reference to his lost child and the other pregnancies being terminated more broadly. Perhaps even an additional reference to the young mothers (children themselves i.e. choir (innocent) girls) forced to terminate their pregnancies or give their babies away because of society's stigma about sex before marriage. We have to consider the time context around the song. Teen pregnancy was very stigmatised at the time. Girls often had their agency striped away and were forced to terminate or adopt out their babies. The suffering of children reference could be double pronged; referencing both the terminated foetus and the suffering teen mother. Send that little child to me, send the little children = he wishes they had been given the opportunity to raise their child. He is fantasising about being given a second chance; wishing for his child to be there. He then also says "children" (plural); he is taking the thought further, wanting to rescue all the other children. It is redemptive; wishing for a second chance. Perhaps stoping someone else's abortion and raising the child would help him heal from his sense of loss. He couldn't save his child, but he could save the others. He is acknowledging that if someone were to offer to take the child, some other teen mother might not have to go through what his love went through. All day the doctor, handles his responsibilities = all day is saying "all the time" aka very frequently, terminations are happening. The doctor is efficient. He is thinking of the many children that are not to be. However, by using the words "handles his responsibility", he is acknowledging the doctor is just doing his job, following the orders of the forceful parents. His responsibility is to help the girl by yielding to what the parents deem best for her. He is just following orders. Again, the time context is important. This analysis in consistent with the culture of the time. Then just a repeat of the previous words for reiteration... So that is how I read the lyrics, if that helps Nick :) Loving watching your videos. It is heartwarming to see people outside our country, appreciating these criminally underrated, under-appreciated local talents

You are one of the few who actually takes the time to know the song & what its about.. Only takes a couple of minutes.. That's one of the reasons people watch you, you understand the music.. I love the early Jimmy stuff.. There is a difference between his Chisel & solo singing career i think.. Both good but different.. His singing changed when he left Chisel..
