Spot on about No Sense. Hold Me Tight is simply about the fact that everyone, no matter of station in life, does IT. Very funny and rocking. Great songs from a quality final album, before re grouping, touring, recording a couple on new albums and touring more. Sadly the drummer passed.....but that didn't stop them. Great live shows. Love your work.

The singer sounds like he's doing a Sting impression
@VolumeEleven
@VolumeEleven 9 ай бұрын
He probably was trying to mimick Sting on this track. I felt they were very much their own group, but there was an ingress of that Police sound that began around 1980 (''Forever Now'', ''Cheap Wine''). They had plenty of their own strengths to go by, but they decided to take pieces from some other band's pie to sell more records, I guess.

It's hard to come up with a comment on these two songs. I've always enjoyed them and the parent album 'Twentieth Century'', but they're just part of the Cold Chisel hit list. I will have more to say on the follow up single ''Saturday Night''.

I was caught off guard by these songs being requested together as they’re from the same album but not connected. I think they were actually on different sides of the album. But while they were ok tracks they were nothing special for Cold Chisel. If I was to pick two songs to connect for them it’d be Ghost Town into Saturday Night. Two completely different feels but a great pair of songs that actually run into each other on the album. That being said, Twentieth Century isn’t a true Cold Chisel album - they’d partially broken up at this point, with Jimmy Barnes and the drummer Steve Prestwich having physical fistfights. Steve only played on three songs on the album (No Sense being one of them). Of songs you haven’t done for Cold Chisel I’d recommend: Bow River (studio version) Flame Trees Forever Now Standing On The Outside Rosaline Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye) Showtime Breakfast At Sweetheart’s Rising Sun Four Walls Best Kept Lies You Got Nothing I Want Janelle All of these I would urge the studio versions, but I specifically mentioned it on Bow River as I knew you did the live version. The think to note about Cold Chisel is that, idolisation of Jimmy Barnes aside, he did his best work in the era around their third and fourth albums, East and Circus Animals. While Jimmy did some belter vocals in things like Wild Thing from the Last Stand concert back in the mid-80s, he blew out his vocals decades ago. Don’t get me wrong, he can still sing a mighty vocal, but there’s a reediness to it that just came from too many years of having to sing at redline levels. If you listen to the studio versions of songs you’re most likely to hear him delivering his best nuances. That’s the thing that often gets lost in the live versions, is how soulful he could be. And then of course you have Mossy with his amazing vocals as well. Even without Jimmy, Ian could’ve taken Cold Chisel to the top of the charts year after year, but with the tag-team of Mossy and Barnesy on vocals where Isn would set a song up and Jimmy would bring the third verse in at another third or fifth higher as the lead vocal just set their songs at an unattainable level for other bands.

Both songs were released on one singular 7" record. Hold Me Tight and No Sense came in together back in the early 80's. I've always loved Hold Me Tight, and I still wish the song was longer. Australians seemed to enjoy messing with the skiffle strum for a while. Split Enz , from New Zealand , were notorious for using the maori strum and Mental As Anything had a skiffle approach to ''If You Leave Me'' and Chisel with ''No Sense''. Great sound , should have been exploited more , cool little songs there!

Lyrically similar to the Cole Porter song Let's Do It, Let's Fall in Love, it comically lists groups that engage in sexual congress (Presidents and chauffeurs do it / Terrorists on sofas do it / Movie stars repeat it till it's right). Musically, it is in the style of 1950s rock songs. Tony Cohen, working with the band for the first time said it was, "a rude song about fucking that lasted about two minutes. It was not great but alright." This from their album when they were breaking up so assume the really short song was just thrown on the album to get it done. Do not know if that actually went on but noticed as a kid that there seemed to be about three or four really short songs on the album. Really love the vocals on No Sense. Never gave much thought what that song was about but what you described could well be it. Look like just a home video thrown together in early 80s. I think this one of their most overlooked albums. The Game is a track I just threw on a playlist for myself whilst I working early in the morning. From the sane album. Must have listened to it 20 to 30 times in the last month. I should probably throw No Sense on there too.

@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 I will confirm that it is me at 5:58 A group of people had some filming equipment, and one fella asked if he could film me. He told me I had nice legs, which even in 1983 was quite a personal and forward thing to say to a stranger. To get him out of my hair, I allowed him and his camera buddy to do some filming, and I agreed to do some poses. They thanked me, and went their merry way. A few months later, a friend asked if I had some involvement with Cold Chisel. I didn't know what she was talking about because I never listened to the band. She explained that there's a deadringer of me in the latest Chisel video. The deadringer was at Bondi Beach and she's wearing the same clothes I usually wear. I could have died when I finally got to see the video. It quickly brought my mind back to those goons with the camera. The cheek! They never told me they were making a Cold Chisel video! Australia was quite lawless in those days. I spoke about this video to Kaitlyn Batt a month ago, but not being able to recall the song title, I didn't know where to look. Cold Chisel have 79 videos on their official channel, and I wasn't going to go through them all just to find a couple of seconds of me. As the Hanier couple were watching the ''Hold Me Tight'' video, I began to feel dread that it might be the video I was in. Turns out I was in the ''No Sense'' video. I don't care if the director of this video is some artist from South America. My guess is that he sent off some wallies with cameras to film a whole lot of random crap in Sydney and gave this ''artist'' the film-stock, and he just did all the editing. I cannot remember either of the two fellas with the cameras having accents. They were Aussies, and were not members of Cold Chisel. I was 28 when they shot that video. A year prior I was at the shooting for Mental As Anything's ''Ready For You Now'' music video (which was shot at a club), and 10 years before that, I was at Ross Wilson's Mighty Kong concert which was filmed by GTK, and my little face was also captured on that. The Mighty Kong concert footage is on youtube, you can feel free to look it up. I'm the girl with the black hair that looks at the camera. You can't miss me. I suppose cameramen liked me in those days.

Gillian and I were big buyers of those various artist compilation albums that were (often) compiled by CBS, EMI or K-Tel. Squeezed in between KC & The Sunshine Band's 'Give It Up' and Elton John's 'I Guess I Call It The Blues' was Cold Chisel's latest hit 'No Sense''. It was the song we hated the most on that record (sorry Chisel fans). As soon as 'Give It Up' began to fade out, Pups would dive towards the record player, and skip over a couple of songs, and drop the needle right on Donna Summer's 'She Works Hard For The Money'. There'was no chance for 'No Sense'. I've known of the song for forty years, and all I can say is that it's just okay. Jimmy Barnes wasn't too shabby of a songwriter. Cheers, Hayley

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering My home was K-Tel City at one stage. Check out ''K-Tel City'' by old Sydney band XL Capris - a band that never got Countdown kid love. Gillian and I had almost every little compilation record that'd come out every couple of months with all the latest hits on the charts - some poorly edited, of course. We even made the grave error of buying those horrible records that had third-rate recordings of the latest hit songs that were performed by unknowns. Did you ever get those? I remember Gillian being very excited to have this one record that featured Frankie Miller's '"Darling''. When she played it, she burst out crying and complained that the singer didn't sound like Frankie Miller. Mum jokingly said ''Well, maybe it's his son!'', and Gilllian got even more upset. Mum had to drive a tearful Gillian back to the record store to purchase a record with the original artists. Action Replay by K-Tel was the record Gillian happily came home with, and it was a damn good record. Dan Hartman, Blondie, Sylvester, Nick Gilder and.... 😮‍💨Cold Chisel and their oh-so-riveting ''Shipping Steel'' (as boring as the title suggests). But as long as Pups was a happy little camper... 😊

@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 😄 awww Hayley , your comment has taken me right back to the early 70’s when I was about 10 , we also had K-tel and another similar company called Ronco who did the same thing ( I imagine it was an unimaginative name for a company owned by a guy called Ron 😳 ) , in addition , I vividly remember a Christmas Top of the Pops compilation album which included many non original artists recordings 🤦‍♂️.. which included Gypsys tramps and thieves by Sonny and Cher , Jeepster by Marc Bolan and Rose Garden by country star Lynn Anderson .. the rest were session re recordings by the tea lady who worked at the studios presumably. So yeah I fully understand what you were saying . You seem quite sanguine about letting your wee sister have her way with selecting which songs to play .. 😆.. I grew up with 3 sisters and I can assure you that even though they were and are close , they fought like cats in a sack when it came to who was in charge of their wee pifco dansette record player 😝 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 I knew Frankie Milker as an actor in gritty Scottish dramas about religion and violence in Glasgow and it was only later I realised he was also a well known singer - but I must say I HATED with a passion that song Darling ..😡.. omg what a dirge ! Sorry to your sis if she’s still a fan 😄 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering LOL, I liked the song, and she did to. I doubt she'd be so crazy about it now. I remember back in the 70's, the family and our friends would camp and in the typical 70's fashion, we'd sing songs with guitars by a campfire and burn marshmallows. ''Mull Of Kintyre'', ''Fernando'' and ''Darlin'' were our favourite songs to sing in front of a fire. You probably would have found us a little cringey. I'm not surprised that Frankie Miller's an actor. He did have a face for particular roles.
