Long ago when I was about 12 the old black man who shod my horse used a draw knife to trim the hoof. The video is fascinating, and your speed, strength and skill are incredible. I have been shoeing my own horses for over 50 years so I know a bit about how difficult a job it can be.

Slow down dude, you're making me feel old ... oh yeah, I'm already old. Nice work. Cold, hot, makes no difference. As long as the shoe fits the foot it doesn't matter how it got that way. One tip from a farrier old enough to be your grandfather. Keep your lower back straight and bend at the hip and knee. Mostly knee. If you keep rounding your back as you do you'll have major disc problems by the time you're 40. I've seen too many farriers suffer lumbar damage as a result of bending at the waist. Another tip 🙂along the same lines. Don't put your tools on the ground. It's just that much more bending over. Keep them in your tool box and make your box as tall ad you can. Do everything you can to minimize bending over. You'll thank me when you're my age and still working with a healthy back. Keep up the good work.🙂

thanks for the tip that i had to change my body position. my back feels mutch bether now i keep my back in the right position. now i just need an other toolbox. 😁😁👍

Nice job on the hooves! Is that a German short-hair pointer watching you? I think it's cute and gross how dogs hover around the farriers and eat the hoof scraps LOL!

I've been falling asleep to this every so often. Very therapeutic and informative. Also seems like something I could get into. How long would you say it took you to understand what you were doing?

That depends on your Eye - Brain - Hand Cordination. The eyes have to register the whole down to the hoof, you look at the horses conformation and how he moves, is he four square or out of balance, the set of the legs, can you judge where and how much of the overgrown hoff needs to be pared off, can you shape the shoe to the hoof, nailing the shoe and not prick the sensative area. Some shoers catch on pretty quick, they´r naturals, others never do. A good Ferrier School is where you find out if your going to be a shoer.

Wow!, now that was different, enjoyed seeing a different technique on trimming hoofs. What is the purpose for drilling holes in the heels of the shoes?

those holes are for studs. so the horse has more traction on slippery crass. like football shoes😃

awesome thanks. no i learned to use the hammer and knife. don't think it is mutch different from using the nippers. it's abaut what you trim off. not how. i'm from holland. and i fit to the white line. hope you liked the video:)

I thought you must be from Holland or Germany, Swedish shoers no long use the hammer and knife, that was more for the Old Time Shoers who had learned military shoeing.
