MIKE, I noticed that your coil is loose. I had a 67 Bug with that problem. I finally ran a ground strap from the coil mount to a screw which was directly to the block. That fixed the intermittant miss I had with that car.

Suggestion from an old vw guy. Back in the 70"s I watched my first car burn from a failed fuel filter located in the engine compartment. I was 17 then and the car was a clean 66 bug. Every vw I have owned since that scary event I have moved the fuel filter outside of the engine compartment. This month I drove home a 73 thing and before I left with the car I replaced all of the old fuel line and moved the fuel filter under the car where the fuel line exits the frame, no electrics located in that area.....just sharing.

Like the entire engine build video set....kick myself weekly for trading my 59 bus for a 51 chev pu when the bus wasn’t running well.....years later it dawned on me the heat riser tube had to be plugged created the misery.....always wanted to pop a 1600 dual port in that machine but went from 36 to 40 horse and loved my bus when I finally got a transaxle that had 4 solid working forward gears...

If I remember correctly, you should get a manual for that carb. The throttle plates have to be set at a certain angle to get it to idle good. And also, if it has a Holley list number, the Holley jets will fit.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
it takes weber jets. I dont know why holley had a name on it in the early days. But it is really a weber carb. Known as weber progressive today. Empi makes replacement jets for it.

I think you are going to find your jetting is closer than you think. If I were you i would try a little experment. Take out the 009 dist and put in a vacuum advance in before you change any of your jetting. I think you may find your hesitation will go away. I have had the same problen running the 009s in the past. I wont put them on any street motor anymore just for that reason.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
yea I know about the 009 issues that your talking about but trust me it is too lean at idle. The worry about over advance at idle or light acceleration may be jetting... Check back later when I work it out. Lots of people think that you need a slower advance like vacuum. which can help with detonation. but is not usually a running problem. It can cure a running problem or mask a lean transition. but it may not be the real problem.

That idle mixture screw is in the most pain in the .... spot they possibly could have put it... along with the “smart” choice of putting the connector to the electric choke right up against the metal fan shroud haha. After the second time my barrier fell and shorted out... it had to go and I just run mine wide open choke always and maybe have to rev it a few times in AZ winter but that’s really the only difference running it unplugged and twisted so it holds it wide open while cold. Just turn the casing to the left as you are looking at in still on the engine and if I recall that should loosen the spring tension. One way tightens other loosens the choke tension lol I’m sure you’ll figure that out no problem once you start adjusting it with the 3 screws loosened just enough to spin it
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
yea thanks for that all these 2 barrels came from other applications. These came on pintos and vegas. PIA to get the jetting and choke right. but once they are done no more issues. The choke therm on the fan housing is a pain. I set them a bit loose for easy morning start but they have a bit of a warm up time.

I gain a lot of good building tips from your video series on the motor project. Back almost 10 years ago watched folks like VWDarin, EZGZ. My first how to video on you tube on vw motors that i followed was by Jack Kessel from South Jersey VW club. On buses my buddy vw64manyrd on his video's i felt like i was working with him in his beetle barn. I usually find that getting any center mounted carb set up to idle and transition out of the idle circuit is not good when there is not enough warm air going thru the manifold heat tubes and adequate warm air going to the carb inlet. The original bug engine...and any engine that has the carb isolated from a strong heat source, needs a hot carb base and intake. Is the manifold directly beneath the carb cold to the touch?

couldn't fix it got a new one 30 bucks but it is worth it. You could not buy the thermostat for these in the 80s.

Lower left front, is that a valve spring? The pushrod tubes don't completely cover? What is the gauge by the distributor? Engine sounds great.

Mine has dual hpmx40s and after the car warms up sometimes it'll idle high, like 1200 to 1300 rpm, the guy who built my engine said an idle jet could be clogged, is that true? It also kinda stinks out the exhaust. Other than that it runs well, I've noticed if I'm in 4th for example if I'm at under 2k rpm if I press the gas far enough I'll hear somewhat of a tinny ish sound from the engine.

TOO LEAN trust me you are smelling hydrocarbons from lean misfire. not a total miss but will make your engine run hotter than it should. Get an exhaust bung and a AFR. oxygen sensor setup to set them right.

could be idle jet clogged but usually that would miss and pop at idle on dual 40s.

I am really enjoying your channel. What performance carb, ignition, exhaust etc.. do you recomend for a stock 1600cc ( super beetle its a pretty healthy engine with 100psi in all 4 cylinders. I am in Virginia so i am close to sea level if that makes a difference )? Don't worry about fools giving you a hard time. They are not brave enough to start a channel,. To the folks that have nothing nice to say, start your own channel and show us all a better way, until then... shhhhhhh

@@Mikefngarage so you just recommend leave it stock? What performance bolt ons do you recommend for a stock 1600cc to get the best bang for the buck? Say you had a $1500 performance upgrade budget for your 1600cc, what would you do?

Mike, great vids as always, hey, have you ever installed the empi oil breather kit in a BUS? Just wondering on a clean way to mount the box and where to route the hoses...? Ideas? Thanks, you rock!
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 3 жыл бұрын
usually on the backside of the fan shroud. hoses cut holes in the engine tin and route them up there about the best place. I think I put one on this engine and on the 1904 stoker.

maybe pay attention to some of the 'armchair critics', some of them happen to know what they're talking about. let's face it, who is going to say anything 'negative' about someone rebuilding a vw motor - unless they're evidently getting stuff wrong. perhaps try to learn something. if you 're just looking for more confirmation bias then make that clear every time you urge people to comment and respond. and if you can't take the heat..

I have no issues with constructive criticism or questioning how I do something. It is only the people who simply put down stuff like you have no idea what your doing or your a complete idiot or you should not be making videos because you dont know what your doing. there is no reason for that. that is just purely hateful.
