MIKE, I noticed that your coil is loose. I had a 67 Bug with that problem. I finally ran a ground strap from the coil mount to a screw which was directly to the block. That fixed the intermittant miss I had with that car.

Suggestion from an old vw guy. Back in the 70"s I watched my first car burn from a failed fuel filter located in the engine compartment. I was 17 then and the car was a clean 66 bug. Every vw I have owned since that scary event I have moved the fuel filter outside of the engine compartment. This month I drove home a 73 thing and before I left with the car I replaced all of the old fuel line and moved the fuel filter under the car where the fuel line exits the frame, no electrics located in that area.....just sharing.

If I remember correctly, you should get a manual for that carb. The throttle plates have to be set at a certain angle to get it to idle good. And also, if it has a Holley list number, the Holley jets will fit.

it takes weber jets. I dont know why holley had a name on it in the early days. But it is really a weber carb. Known as weber progressive today. Empi makes replacement jets for it.

I think you are going to find your jetting is closer than you think. If I were you i would try a little experment. Take out the 009 dist and put in a vacuum advance in before you change any of your jetting. I think you may find your hesitation will go away. I have had the same problen running the 009s in the past. I wont put them on any street motor anymore just for that reason.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea I know about the 009 issues that your talking about but trust me it is too lean at idle. The worry about over advance at idle or light acceleration may be jetting... Check back later when I work it out. Lots of people think that you need a slower advance like vacuum. which can help with detonation. but is not usually a running problem. It can cure a running problem or mask a lean transition. but it may not be the real problem.

That idle mixture screw is in the most pain in the .... spot they possibly could have put it... along with the “smart” choice of putting the connector to the electric choke right up against the metal fan shroud haha. After the second time my barrier fell and shorted out... it had to go and I just run mine wide open choke always and maybe have to rev it a few times in AZ winter but that’s really the only difference running it unplugged and twisted so it holds it wide open while cold. Just turn the casing to the left as you are looking at in still on the engine and if I recall that should loosen the spring tension. One way tightens other loosens the choke tension lol I’m sure you’ll figure that out no problem once you start adjusting it with the 3 screws loosened just enough to spin it
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
yea thanks for that all these 2 barrels came from other applications. These came on pintos and vegas. PIA to get the jetting and choke right. but once they are done no more issues. The choke therm on the fan housing is a pain. I set them a bit loose for easy morning start but they have a bit of a warm up time.

I usually find that getting any center mounted carb set up to idle and transition out of the idle circuit is not good when there is not enough warm air going thru the manifold heat tubes and adequate warm air going to the carb inlet. The original bug engine...and any engine that has the carb isolated from a strong heat source, needs a hot carb base and intake. Is the manifold directly beneath the carb cold to the touch?

negative comments are like congress man dont pay attention to them they think they they know everything but they just know how to lie to get reelected

maybe pay attention to some of the 'armchair critics', some of them happen to know what they're talking about. let's face it, who is going to say anything 'negative' about someone rebuilding a vw motor - unless they're evidently getting stuff wrong. perhaps try to learn something. if you 're just looking for more confirmation bias then make that clear every time you urge people to comment and respond. and if you can't take the heat..

I have no issues with constructive criticism or questioning how I do something. It is only the people who simply put down stuff like you have no idea what your doing or your a complete idiot or you should not be making videos because you dont know what your doing. there is no reason for that. that is just purely hateful.

Your comment reminds me of a do nothing Democrat. Arm chair critics, they don't do anything unless they do it right and they end up doing nothing.
