I’ve got a 96 GMC Sierra 3500 single cab 1ton dually with the 6.5L turbo diesel and there is nothing as happy as one idling away! Mine starts every damn time I go to fire it up, give it a few moments to cycle the glow plugs and bam!! And mine has the updated injection pump with the updated “black box”. Also got the Banks Sidewinder without the stupid silencer plate! Love the old GMC beast of an engine, true it’s not a powerhouse but at cruising speeds 70-80mph she’s happy and don’t guzzle the fuel like my 02 7.3 f350 dually 4x4 does!! Long live the true, simple diesel that keep on running. Also note** GM used the 6.2L then 6.5L then the 6.6L duramax.....notice how it was a steady incremental upgrade and nothing insane like fords failed wisdom. Now I do love me a 7.3L Navistar engine, but if I’m going to just cruise on the highway and pull my 22” tandem axle trailer I’ll stick with the 6.5L Detroit, plus that smooth turbo whistle is happiness to my heart :)

i love those old 6.2 and 6.5 detroit diesels. especially the ones that are non turbo they are tough. reliable. good on fuel cheap parts and simple. they do have flaws! and one of the flaw is a very poor starter! and quite cold blooded compared to more modern engines! i dont find them under powered like everyone else seems to. .they werent built for high power they were built for a rugged powerplant that did decent mpg's. i have a 94 non turbo 6.5 has 400 000miles and runs like new and i have a 86 6.2 its been redone ofcourse but i love that old truck! it gets 40mpg driving 55 good tough and cheap iconic engines of better days gone by! keep.them alive!!!

Sad thing is the 6.5 made less HP and less torque than even the 5.7
@itsfrickindale36835 жыл бұрын
Dr_Face_Slapper Nope, they generated the same amount of horsepower, but the Detroit made like 450ftlbs of torque. The Detroit made that in a much lower power band and did it very economically too. The 350 was 10-14mpg with 3.73’s and I can get 15-18 out of my 6.5L with 4.11’s.
@lb48995 жыл бұрын
your power ratings are wrong bud. 1995 350 truck motors for c/k 2500/3500 180 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. GM variant 6.5 diesel made 215 horsepower and 440ft/lb in all gm pickup trucks. Not the fabled 260ft/lb that was strictly used in delivery trucks
@lb48995 жыл бұрын
The only engine other than Corvette style high compression engines that made a good bit of power were the mid range that were stabbed into Tahoe and suburbans 200 horsepower and 310 foot-pounds of torque.
