Cold Steel messed up. The Natchez Bowie has a cable tang, you don't want that. It cost $200 and they give you a plastic sheath. Lol The Frontier Bowie is FULL TANG, that's what you want. It cost around $100 and comes with a leather sheath. Natchez Bowie is prettier but when it comes to hard use that weld fusing the tang to blade will break. There's your answer. I only buy full tang knives. Never cable or rat tang.
@DonnieBAllDay
@DonnieBAllDay 5 жыл бұрын
The cable is better for fighting vibration to the hand. It's designed as a fighting Bowie and not so much a workhorse. I just like to show that it can if you need it to.

Im conclusively convinced I gotta have me one for the ol collection! Thanks for the wonderful reviews you have done on these blades to end all blades! Edited to add: I had to dremel down the lumps in the mouth of the Natchez sheath just a bit to make access to the blade a lot easier. Left enuff of the bumpy bits to hold the knife when turned upside down without the strap.. I love my Natch..

I agree that we should all own both. That said, the Nachez wins for me, at 5/16" thick spine, it carries momentum which means less calories burned. I also have & love the Laredo & the Trailmaster, which I've owned the longest in Carbon V convex edge. Cold Steel is my favorite blade company. I have collected so many CS products & none of them have ever let me down. Materials, fit, finish, ergonomics & above all sharpness, Lynn's company rocks ( at least my world )!!! By the way, I also am a southpaw & typically won't buy a blade that I can't wear left side carry, but some of the CS designs are just too good to nitpick over a small trait like that.

Cold Steel has made some of the best- bar none- factory production large bowies ever. I jumped on the Cold Steel bandwagon with the first Carbon-5 Trailmasters in the early-mid 1980's.. In my opinion and experience, every one of Lynn Thompson's big bowies have knocked it out of the ball park. Some of the other stuff, maybe not so much but the big bowies definitely lead the pack in my experience. Now Im not so hip to the cable tangs so my Trailmasters and the 1917 get the most usage for camping, but the Laredo and Natchez seem pretty solid. Certainly solid enuff for doing what they were designed to do- but as I don't get into many altercations involving bare steel, they just dont get used as much... All that said, I likes me a solid knife made of good steel with great tempering, and all of these bowies do provide that. Naturally I have my favorites, but I can't remember ever being disappointed in the performance of any of my CS blades... then again, I don't abuse mine by throwing them, unlike what SOME guys do! I have rehandled several of the kraton-gripped CS knives with elk antler with inlaid turquoise and lapus and maybe that is part of my problem with the cable tangs, kinda problematic regripping over a cable tang. Someday I may try removing the cable on one and TIG-welding a steel "tang extension" and then re-gripping with elk, caribou, or maybe even sambar if available.

I love your channel and appreciate your reviews and shown usage of the blades. I own the Natchez Bowie in San Mai steel made in Japan. It has a leather sheath but without a frog. The San Mai version has a polished steel guard and pommel. The pommel is also screwed onto the handle with a security spanner screw. It has a perfect line on each side where the steel folds over to wrap the VG-1. It is an amazing fighting blade. I have two other san mai blades. One is a Magnum II tanto made in Japan and the other is an Outdoorsman made in China. You should really get an Outdoorsman if you want to have a blade for the outdoors. Even my 4116 Krups SS Outdoorsman puts most of my blades to shame when slicing and chopping. I'm just a Cold Steel guy.

Always cut at 45°, and keep cutting at a angle, you don't at 90°. When tou cut at 45 you will cut into the wood you have alreasy cut and the chips will fly. People cut at 90°, when that is the saw cut. Cutting horizontal you are compressing the fibres. It is far quicker to cut at 45°. I have the Nachez and the Larado in san mai 3. Both are brilliant . The frontier is even better when you shape the handle you fit your hand. And scallop the handle between the screws top and bottom makes the handle even better. I put micarta scales on mine, green micarta looks nice. Always enjoy the vids mate. All the best from England!

Do you know what that powder is,and how to get rid of it?? Note: I sharpened the swedge on mine to achieve that nasty "back cut" that the bowie is famous for (ref; Bill Bagwell on bowie knife fighting etc).

there are plenty looding the market. Beware of some of the "super steels". A perfectly heat treated 440C or D2 has better edge retention than a common heat treat on a super steel. Stuff thats been around longer has been mastered. A lot of the newer blends are being used but the makers don't yet know how to fully dial them in. You want an all around great blade with an amazing Heat treat, look up the Esee Junglas

Got the Natch, the Laredo .... now the Frontier 1917.... Got some work to do on the edge and the clip/swedge, which I sharpen on all my bowies. I got the 1917 directly as a result of your vids on the topic... the knife with a full tang has GOT to be stronger than the cable-tangs.. You give some good experienced advice IMO! Now the Wild West probably (or the Case, depending- (I heard what you say about the Case and it's steel)... The Natchez is according to my measurement- 5/16", the Frontier is 1/4"- good thing cuz it would be noticeably heavier otherwise... There's a tv show called frontier about a man raised by indans grows up into mountain man fights English soilders and other people don't know if you ever seen the tv series but it's a show to my liking and I think you would like it it has knives tomahawks war clubs and other bladed wepans the frontier knife makes me think of the tv series frontier I guess it's the name i Like the Natchez Bowie But I do prefer a full Tang knife especially for fighting, servival and heavy chopping but it looks derable good video brother Frontier 2016 tv series on Netflix Actor Jason Momoa Type this in it will take you straight to it

The Natchez is next !! You sold me on that one .... need a few more weeks . I’m such a huge fan of the Cold Steel Laredo and Trail Master San Mai ... Do you think the Natchez is better than both of those 2 ?? IYO ??
@DonnieBAllDay
@DonnieBAllDay 5 жыл бұрын
That's tough. The longer and thinner the clip point, generally, the weaker the tip. I have had no issues with mine. Of the three, I think the Natchez is far better looking and a better fighting Bowie. As a camp Bowie though, the other 2 in San Mai are hard to beat.

I have the Natch, would like to get the 1917 while Im still young enuff to enjoy it! The plastic sheath on the natch sucks, really... however for a knife of this size, a scabbard isnt totally out of place. Oh, how do you figger the natch is a "Musso-style" bowie? Curious. Whichever bowie you like, our descendants will look back at these days as the halcyon-days of blade use and development. Cold Steel definitely leads the pack in knife and market development.
@DonnieBAllDay
@DonnieBAllDay 5 жыл бұрын
It's styled after the Musso. Coffin grip, swept spine, long clip, raised ricasso. All traits of the Musso.

Donnie B All Day I’m starting to prefer the SK-5 over the stainless. Sure, it’s vulnerable to rust, but the oiled blade, and the brass guard and wood handle just give it a more authentic Bowie knife feel.

Lets keep it real.. Cold steel uses that branded cable over a full tang for no other reason that to cut the cost of steal material and manufacturing cost. Any armourer will twll you that the nife is awesome but that lart of the design sucks and is cheap and has no purpous other than to benifit cold steal and thier benifit screws you the consumer over. Still a nice knife though...
@DonnieBAllDay
@DonnieBAllDay 4 жыл бұрын
This method has been used for many more years than any of us have lived. Why would they use it for cost reasons when it's the only model they use it on? Wouldn't they employ it more? They are known for their versatility. Full, hidden, cable... they can produce anything, any way and these two prove that. A cable tang vs a full three quarter exposed. What other big brand is doing that?
