Watching your videos saved me a boat load of money. I have been looking into getting a guided system but not any more. I have all the dmt plates, 3 spyderco ceramic stones and 4 DAN'S whetstone, the highest a surgical black. So with your videos I have extreme sharp edges. THANKS AGAIN

I mean this in the best way possible - your videos often make me feel sleepy... It is so relaxing to watch your slow, deliberate technique of sharpening , it's almost meditative! As someone fairly new to freehand sharpening, your methods and commentary have helped me enormously! Thank-you from Australia.

Definitely get the workshop if you can it will pay off in the long run. At 17:40 you congraduated Cold steel for doing a fine heat treatment. Is that like to soft can't take a fine edge and too hard and get microchipping or is it from other experience?
@roughroosterknifesharpenin55314 жыл бұрын
Well that's the best edge I ever got on a cold steel.

Rooster, Haven't seen ya stream in a number of months. You inspired me to pick up and try good arks ( after having tried shit cheap ones many years ago ), after years of being happy with diamond plates and Japanese water stones, both natural and synthetic. After my learning journey with my set of Dan's arks( Soft, Hard, Translucent, Black all 10x3x1 or larger ) picked up over the course of a few years I've gotten an edge too sharp to even whittle my wife's pixie thin hair. Just pops in two as soon as it touches it. Just want to say thanks for making me give arks a second chance. Hope you hop on again for a sharpening or discussion stream, and hope all is well. Cheers, Chef Kev

I have to say I've improved my sharpening from watching your channel. I could sharpen before and get a decent edge but struggled to get shaving sharp then again I didn't know much about burr formation and flipping a burr etc I just kept going until it was a workable edge. I've recently been sharpening my kitchen knives of unknown steel made by Cuisinart and I've been using the diamond sharpening block actually from harbor freight it has 200,300,400 and 600 grit on it and i get a toothy shaving edge believe it or not. I then progress to a king combination waterstone with 1200 and 6000 grit but ive noticed if i continue to the 6000 grit it does polish and i have nice bevel on it but it no longer seems as sharp, but it will cleanly cut paper. I use the sharpie method and I've checked it using a magnifier and its all removed in the progression any thoughts? I've read kitchen knives you generally want to keep a toothy edge on it instead of a polished edge. Also id like to get in contact with you and send something out to you as appreciation for all your help with videos and feedback on my previous comments
@roughroosterknifesharpenin55314 жыл бұрын
Seems like you are on the right track. Well once you start the transfer from toothy to a polish you are expecting that tooth you were feeling still. When you get a polish it don't dig as good. A polished edge will get super sharp. But it's more for slicing. It's according to what you are gonna use the knife for as to if you want a tooth or polish.

Hey all just thought I would update you all on the arrival of my Dan's Arks vs the BestSharpeningStone Arks.... Well, you do get what you pay for. They are thicker, and wider even though they are all supposed to be 8x2x1/2. They are all finer stones and much more consistent. If you want an Ark.. get Dan's or just keep saving the cash. A few bones more is so worth it!... Just have to add a True Hard or Translucent.... Yeah they are that good and never again will I order others.. They are obviously better finished, more size consistent, and better stones. Mr. RoughRooster Knife Sharpening you were very correct. And yes I am the guy he was talking about... I had already ordered these before I received the BestSharpeningStone versions... Just thought I would trust him and the recommendation of several others.. yes, they have our best interests at heart.. believe them!

Super! I really liked your concept of "shaping" vs. "reprofiling". That makes sense! It was good to see diamond leading into Arkansas stones....that's a trick! And, I agree that transluscents do not give the "perfect" mirror polish....BUT....do what you just did with that Cold Steel or what I do with chisels....hand it to the owner and they are going to say, "Holy shit!" It's usually above and beyond what they need......the trick is teaching them how to MAINTAIN it! I'm in the middle of that, now....doing two identical planes at two different angles....the whole idea is to minimize metal removal. And I dont do microbevals.....perfect apexes or, nothing. It's up to them.....if they hone frequently with a hard or translucent Ark and learn how to strop.....they can avoid "sharpening" for a long time.....unless they're trying to cut nails in two! LOL! Anyhow, finishing on a translucent, to me, is more than enough for human beings....and I DO lap both sides of my stones differently. It's like having a collection of double-sided stones....just a bit more nuanced! LOL!

My limited experience was expanded with your video; I had never heard of ctx-xhp. Something I can look for in the future. There seems to be some preparations for sharpening. Can you share your "check-list" of preparations, things you have to do before "sharpening?" What to look for? How to correct? As much as your comfortable with sharing. One thing I've noticed is if the blade isn't straight, such as a curve or bend at the tip, you can't easily get even bevels.

The first arkansas stones that I ever bought were a 3 pack of black, hard, and soft each mounted to a wood block from best sharpening stones. Those had me convinced that arkansas were just old school garbage. Im glad I gave them a second chance.

That 600 grit dmt was almost brand new when I got it. Guy didn't like it, said it was too course. I dont think he knew it had to be broken in. I got a steal on that thing. I used it just enough to break it in before I sent it. I have a para 3 in xhp. My favorite work knife. It took me a bit to figure out how to sharpen the damn thing. Once I did, oh boy. I can get that thing blistering sharp. Does fantastic with polished or toothy edges. It's a shame Cold Steel switched from xhp to s35vn on their high end knives. I definitely prefer xhp myself. Congrats on the new house, big homie. I found what I want to get you for a house warming present! Send me your new address when you get a chance. Much love, brother. No homo.

I dipped for 27 years. Dipped two cans of Copenhagen a day and might open a third. Almonds! Put them in the Copenhagen can (wiped it out good). I ate so many it peeled the inside oh my mouth out several times. Hard to quit. Don't swap for Juelz. That is even worse. Good luck call me for support.

Yeah I only have limited first hand experience with with Arks mostly my Lansky.. but is why I bought Arks! the Hard is the BestSharpeningStone that I am disappointed in. The black and soft seem OK although my '91-3ish Black from Lansky is definitely a better cut. The Soft seems bout right... When My Dan's ship/show up I will definitely compare them and get back. Got the Arcs to learn freehand sharpening... Although still use the Lansky for small LionSteel Damasteel blade pocket knife with 30° bevel. Much easier to control.. the kitchen knives are doing fine. The Dan's were ordered before receiving the BestSharpeningStone Arcs.. we will see... You almost seemed to ask for these stones to do a comparison video.... Go ahead ask and you shall probably receive..

You're making me want to try some arkansas. I am totally with you on that S35VN/XHP thing. I hate S35. Don't like to sharpen it, the edge retention is not good.. it's just overall extremely overrated. XHP is a big upgrade to it. Even S30V is way better in my opinion.

Never really heard anyone say anything bad about s30v. Half the people that "NEED" the latest super steels and critique them don't ever cut shit but tape or cardboard. And yea s35vn sucks
