Cold Steel Marauder Nine Inch aus8 blade 11.2 ounce bowie knife not in the same class as your traditional Bowie but creating its own place in the market

I got the serrated version of this! Serrated blades are FAR more destructive against flesh, I cant think of a more effective knife for combat than this. This blade will truly offer maximum damage against adversaries if your back is against the wall. I ordered one and showed my dad, then he threw me a $100 bill and said, “Order me one too!”

If you ever go to a museum and look at ancient weapons from time periods where people were slashing each other with blades on the regular it's always striking house thin The blades are compared to modern reproductions I remember looking at some Viking hand axes and realizing that the blades were nice and thin and light and not wide thick chunky things at all but rather more graceful designed purely for cutting, the same goes for swords and daggers and pretty much all sorts of cutting implements that were not designed for smashing armor. I have seen some of the early Bowie knives of the 19th century and they are not chunky like many modern interpretations of the design but rather thin and light and elegant

I regret i did not buy one sooner! Had similar THEORETICAL concerns bout the tip and edge strength based on older version hollow grinds and 3/16 stock. I ended up w newer flat grind , tip is really well supportrd, but id say the hollow grond likely has plenty of tip support plenty of tip support if you do not apply a proper swedge to the clip

Thanks for the review. I've been looking for a light weight defense knife on the hog hunts. We hunt hard on public land and hike well over 50 miles. This seems perfect especially with the weight.

Note the new stone washed ones, at least the plain edge, are flat ground, making the tip as supported as as my Laredo bowie. Regardless, the weight and cutting power and leathality make it a great dismounted hunting/field knife, imo.

Funny you mention how intimidating it can be. That's the primary reason that I'll be getting this knife soon. Not only has my town become quite a bit more dangerous over the years, but I also travel to larger cities around here that have been known to have violent crimes. THAT is why I want this knife and I guess one reason that they say it's a good starter knife.

Good review. Here's my take. I own and use the Cold Steel Boar Hunter which is very similar. The Boar Hunter has the same steel and handle as the Marauder, is only 1/4 inch shorter, but has a very different blade shape. I carry the Boar Hunter on my belt whenever I hunt deer and feral pigs. The main use is to quickly dispatch wounded game that I've shot. Occasionally, I'll use the Boar Hunter to hack smaller undergrowth to clear the path and shooting lanes but otherwise, the main purpose is for stabbing. The length is enough to fully penetrate a deer's chest. However, the Boar Hunter's straight edge makes it awful for any skinning tasks. In contrast, I see the Marauder, with it's upswept blade as being much better at skinning, while easily being able to do everything else the Boar Hunter can do. You pointed out the lightness of the Marauder which is a great advantage over it's heavier competitors when spending long days trekking while hunting. The hollow grind helps in sharpness for cutting tasks as well as helping to lower the carry weight.
@johnanon658
@johnanon658 Жыл бұрын
I had a boar hunter, broad deeply hollow ground blade, like reallly acute geometry, so light. The handles are the same, but the marauder is wholly different feel and point of balance. BH is similar to OSS or OSI, w a seax type profile. Marauder is way heavier and more forward biased than any of these knives. It is not like a heavy bushcraft blade, but it has some serious chopping/slashing power, unlike the OSX or BH models, which can just do draw cuts. Also, the edge with its continuous curve is actually practical for skinning, as you say, but the Marauder is as pointy as any of these knives.

A little nit picky about the rubber molding, which seems fine to my eye. Good review, thanks. I just ordered one. Rational or not, a big light weight knife like this makes my wife feel a touch safer in bear country/isolated areas that we tend to fish or mushroom pick in.

it's a light blade for its size but the really thin grind Behind The Cutting Edge makes for a pretty good Chopper (reference my Cold Steel vs. Frozen beef video) there are definitely better blades for outdoors this thing is really leaning towards a fighting knife but still definitely capable on the trail

Agree totally. Note that the new stone washed ones are flat ground, the plain edge ones at least, making the tip sturdier, and giving it a more choppin feel. Not a properly ground swedge unfortunately. Anyway, same or more support behind the tip than Laredo

Have you used this for chopping? I'm probably gonna get one of those and lower the edge angle to about 10 degrees per side. I'll also likely get rid of the upper guard and the sub hilt. But with the location of the balance point and the lean hollow grind it looks like a nice blade for outdoor use, provided that you don't use it for really high-stress stuff like limbing dead hardwoods or digging with the point.

The aus is very tough, if needing edge maintenance more than some other steels. I have one of the newer stone washed ones, it has flat grinds and really has a lot of cutting power for a light to carry knife

control in the hand it makes it easier to maneuver a heavier blade giving you better Leverage and as well Security in the hand it prevents your hand from slipping either forwards or backwards the blade get stuck into a Target it gives you leverage point to pull it out and as well it makes it much harder to knock the blade out of your hand but with that said it is a loss in maneuverability and Comfort in use some people can't stand it some people love it

I use mine for years for chopping..and fast chopping..for me the SP10 feels very light in my hands..i even use Bowie's of 900 grams..but 900 grams is to heavy.. But SP10 is about 620 grams..

Easy. But the purpose of the guard and subhilt is retention and protecting you from your own blade, and for this they function fantastically. In a realistic self def situation, you aint gonna need a guard to party another bowie,

As a backup it would be fine but as an up front primary in a knife on knife encounter? Not. Both the sub hilt and guards are not going to deflect an incoming blade and you may lose your fingers and thus the fight and perhaps your life. Look at the Gil Hibben Assault Tactical. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_6_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=gil+hibben+bowie+knife&sprefix=gil+hibben%2Caps%2C180 CS makes an excellent product as always. As you pointed out, this badboy will easily cover you on the street against the vast majority of what you will be dealing with. Conceal it with a Panther Concealment Commodore IWB sheath.

Try to deflect an incoming knife with your guard in a fast an brutal chaostic knife fight.. I wish you much succes Anna Peterson.. Please never try that. Those things happens in hollywood movies. If you want to deflect a incoming knife then better use the spine of the blade. Take care and stay save.
