Being such a CS fan over the decades, I had to buy the SRKC to compliment my SRK in VG1. I also love & trust the construction & grind. I agree with you that it would be better at least for batoning with a straight spine, but I have some CS tanto blades that are champs for that task. I'm one for believing the old adage; "A tool for every purpose & a purpose for every tool" so I don't mind carrying an extra blade if I think it will serve the purpose.

Nice review! I hate it when someone makes a review about a knife where, half the video is him reading the specs of the knife and the other half is him holding the knife over a table talking about it. I mean, it's a video not an audio tape. Just show us! :D (btw your edits have become incredible since your first videos! Good job!)

I agree. I think another very important test should always be cutting up meats with bones, skinning, vegetables, fruits. Not many reviewers do that.

Chisel grind the secondary like the SAK. It'll still do the survival stuff well, but be better for bushcrafty stuff.

The sheath on mine really dulls the blade. I mean, it’s immediately visible on the edge. I don’t want to have to sharpen it every time I take it out of the sheath 😛 Luckily I have a bunch of other excellent knives. Have you experienced this problem?

Not with my San Mai SRK or Master hunter, I've only used the compact once and I really need to put a good edge on it.

Nice review mate, personally wouldn't look at a coated blade when there are so many other options....but everything has a market. I like a sabre grind too, fine enough for delicate tasks and that bit of extra metal going up to the spine helps with splitting. Will you lose the little v bevel and have it as a deep scandi / true sabre? I've got a chunky battoning camp knife in 1070 with a sabre grind and I wouldn't trust the edge if it didn't have a secondary (or does it count as a third?) mini bevel.
@RobEvansWoodsman
@RobEvansWoodsman 3 жыл бұрын
I'd never grind the secondary bevel out it would be far to delicate unless it was convex .

Srk compact is too small in handle, and to weak on the tip. Srk normal size is good
@neilorourke71
@neilorourke71 2 жыл бұрын
The thing im starting to realize is that in REAL bushcraft scenarios, you only want/need a knife to do specific things. Obviously, slicing is the biggest, and maybe striking a ferro after that. I suppose if you needed to crack open some wood to get to dry material you would want your knife to do that too. But there's no point in wasting a bunch of energy trying to chop up a log with it when you could just find two upright trees, stick the log piece in between them, and use your weight as leverage to snap the log. Work smart, not hard.
@RobEvansWoodsman
@RobEvansWoodsman 2 жыл бұрын
You'll snap a rotten log easily enough but something seasoned over wrist thick won't snap easily, sometimes the shock from breaking hard wood with your body can be very unpleasant. Starting off the cut so the material knows where to break is a big bonus and you won't do that with a weak knife, no substitute for a saw . Happy trails, Rob.

Hi Rob☺ good test, the small SRK is as you say more aimed at a general purpose survival knife, and it's short comings is easily fixed by carrying a mora knife of your choice, which is designed for woodcraft etc, anyone spending an hour whith a pile of differant knives whittling wood will soon find out that the smaller , thinner , scandi ground blades kept razor sharp, are far easier to use , and less tiring, everyone to his or her personal choice, that's what life's all about, and it's what keeps knife maker's in business, lol, thanks for the video , stay safe mate, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk

Great review Rob! I think you are spot on in your likes and dislikes of the SRK-C. I got mine for $35 and while it is definitely worth that I don’t use it much because I don’t like the skinny grip. I do wear an XL size glove though so someone with smaller hands probably won’t mind as much. I much prefer the thicker grip of the normal SRK and the Master Hunter so the SRK-C doesn’t get much use.

Admittingly, until recent, I was also mixing "flat" and "sabre" grind. Oh well, live and learn. As for SRK Compact ... never have, and never will like coated blades. Never! Maybe it's silly notion of mine, but that kind of black painting is, in my opinion, only for military purpose. When will I ever crawl through a bush and sneak up on a tree? Joking aside, yes I get it, it protects the blade from rust, but that is what maintenance is for! In any case, another fine review Rob. Thumb up.
@RobEvansWoodsman

Coatings are shit! I think that it's cheaper to paint the blade than polish it, keeping manufacturing costs down.

@@sopwithcamelus Why don't they just use a top quality stainless steel? From what I've read there are any number of new "exotic" stainless varieties out there. My old (25 years!) Bushwhacker in Bohler stainless has done an astonishing amount of work. Now replaced by a CS Trail Master San Mai III!

imo there is a terrible thing about this knife: it's smell ! they used some kind of smelly vaseline on its blade and inside the sheath, so even if you clean the blade, it will come greased next time. i wiped it with a Dove tissue for baby and poured and scubed inside with tissues and hand sanitizer. then i oiled it with Victorinox oil, food grade and acceptable smell. I plan to buy some coconut oil and repeat wipe process and pit coconut oil on the blade and inside the sheath (a thin layer). thanks for the review, i watched it before i ordered it. i also put a. Ulticlip Slim 3.3 on it.
