Cinematography in Cold War is simply breathtaking (entire film, but ''the mirror frame'' is pure jewel) . Lukasz Zal should win an Oscar, period. Much better than Roma in this category, there is no question about it, if you have some pro knowledge abt this subject. Seems to me that Poland has the greatest talents when it comes to this field of filmmaking. From Poland come such geniuses as Idziak - responsible for Black Hawk Down cinematography&so much more or Kaminski - Spielberg's cinematographer, now Lukasz is a young talent. Pawel Edelman is great Polish cinematographer, who was named Best European Cinematographer in 2002 at the European Film Awards for his work on The Pianist - brilliant movie with absolutely amazing cinematography. And there are so many other geniuses of cinematography in Poland, like Sobocinski Jr. . As a person associated with the film I often visit the famous Lodz Film School, I met amazing artists there and I can tell this school is the source of great talents when it comes to film craft, it is really a special place.

I love the way it was shot in a manner that harkens back to old Hollywood. BTW interesting choice on the aspect ratio. I'd be interested in hearing from others why he chose it.

reel deal normally 4 x 3 aspect ratio draws your attention into the center of the screen more. The movie The Lighthouse used same aspect ratio but created an almost claustrophobic feel since everything was shot in a dim lit fashion.

Much better than the overrated Roma (which will probably get every Oscar, undeserving in my opinion). As far as the cinematography goes, Cuarón said he wanted a "digital" Black and White... sounds to me like a cop out and that he didn't want to hire Lubezki and have him take the credit. But Roma's Black and White is terrible, it makes the movie feel just what it is: a 70s movie made in 2018... and there are a ton of overexposed whites throught the movie, it's terrible. I'm glad the ASC awarded best cinematography to Cold War over Roma, I'm glad they went with true merit and not popularity.

Roma’s cinematography is fantastic specially in theaters, Cold War’s superior tho but here’s the thing you can’t blame Cuarón for the decisions the Academy will make, it’s obvious they want to clear Hollywood’s image but it’s just ridiculous when they are nominating Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice and Green Book...

@@edcz559 To me Roma's cinematography is amateurish and I already said why. Cuarón and Netflix have been lobbying heavily. Merit is the last thing considered, it's all about lobbying and agendas, it's been like this for decades now. I actually liked Cold War. It was pretty impressive but after I watched it, I legit can't NOT compare their relationship and struggles to Ross and Rachel in Friends 😂. It's just ' I love you- I hate you- I love you- I hate you'. The emotional impact of the film was pretty weak in my opinion. All in all, good film

I think it was told in a very neutral and non judgemental way. Sometimes that's a relief I think. But it's not a weepy in any sense of the word. The film that I compare it to is Betty Blue (37 degree dan le matin) made in the late 80s in France. A magnificent film.
