Hey magz, tip from a subscriber and a military history buff, the Charlie can be identified by the eight VLS tubes forwards of the bow planes. What you had there was a Victor three nuclear attack sub. The victor and the Sierra are the only sub's in the game with the pod on the top of the rudder. The video is great also, and this series is great. Also my favorite sub is the SSN-21 USS Seawolf.

Indeed, In my rush I misidentified the contact on the waterfall. It happens from time to time and is actually one of the things I do like about cold waters, iI's not automated you have to do it yourself which means under stress you can mess it up.

MagzTV I can agree with that, mabie they should make it in the hardest difficulty that it will automatocly identify it for you at 90% solution or when you have sent it on its last dive with a big hole ripped in it. Also, thanks for replying. Finally, change the max speed of a sub to 100 knots and emergency blow at that speed from 1700 feet. Its the coolest thing I have seen in a while.

It's great that the ships didn't act like zombies like in the earlier games before. Not sure if the Skipjacks were still in service during this period of time. If the game does allow it, would be interesting to see a "what if" against what ships or subs at this time period would be like. If not, oh well.

The one thing this game is missing is terrain. Every map is just a flat plain. You could be even more tactical if you could dodge torpedo's using canyons and rocks for cover etc.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the ocean is rather flat, terrain features in the ocean are large with canyons usually measuring kilometers wide as they are created not by flowing water as on the surface but my tectonic activity. Like wise large rocks and such features on the surface are usually the result of centuries of wind, again not something that is really a thing below. I agree there could be a little more going on but dodging torps around rocks and up thin canyons is a Hollywood thing, not anything real.

@malusignatius
@malusignatius 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I should have been clearer, the ID guide's classification's a bit weird. It's the only place I've seen them referred to as a frigate, let alone an FFG (look up the wiki for example). Also, 'FFG' just means they have missiles on them, it doesn't define role. For example, the Krivaks 1 and 2 ships are considered FFGs and they are intended to be principally ASW platforms.
@malusignatius
@malusignatius 7 жыл бұрын
Postscript: I did a look around, The Grisha 3's carry some SAMs, which explains the 'G' in their designation. Also, it looks like the US got rid of corvette as a hull designation (K), but I can't find the replacement 2/3 letter code. Maybe they got lumped in with frigates, if so, that explains why the game calls the Grisha and Riga frigates.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
The thing to keep in mind are all Soviet warships are dedicated ASW platforms. Kirov-class battlecruiser is a ship that you would think of mainly as a surface combat boat, Has massive ASW ccapabilities. The Grisha-class corvette/Frigate (there is so little difference this class has been called both) all have ASW capabilities Hell the Kiev-class aircraft carrier, A damn Aircraft carrier has 10 torpedo tubes for Submarine defence along with the SUW-N-1 anti submarine missile system. This is where the confusion comes from *all* soviet warships are ASW ships, but only some have that as a sole role. The Grisha II and III and IV's came with two armament types, One was pure ASW intended for coastal patrol and fleet defence and one fitted with the SA-N-4 surface-to-air missile system, This second type is what I am facing in this video.
@malusignatius
@malusignatius 7 жыл бұрын
I think it's fairer to say that almost all Soviet ships have some ASW capability instead of being all being dedicated ASW platforms (Compare the Udaloy and the Sovremenny for example, both are what in the west would be classified as destroyers, but one is a vastly more potent ASW combatant than the other), but I do certainly acknowledge that the Soviets (and the Russian Navy that is descended from it) organise their ships very differently from the NATO standard.

MagzTV, you get some of the cushiest missions! I've never had a single 'Hunt the ASW fleet' mission...always it's surface or sub tender fleets. Mind you, last surface fleet had a Kiev in it, those things can soak some damage! I have noticed that when one of my torps is chasing a skimmer, if I have wire control and I go manual, it tends to dip down as I begin a turn. No idea why though.... As an aside, have you tried any of the 1968 missions?? You want hard? The torpedoes you get are archaic to say the least. Either straight shots, or guideds that my granny can outswim....makes for a challenge!

I wonder what the real tactical approach would have been. Afterall it's propably not worth using the very limited number of torpedoes for corvettes and frigates. I suppose a reallife sub commander would have destroyed the tender, limiting the use of a number of submarines in the area for some time, maybe pick off the submarine as well if detected and then disengange unseen

I have fired them plenty of times in my other videos, I didn't this time because the ships I was facing also had missiles of there own but with torps strapped too them. Since firing a Harpoon on targets that close on elite difficulty has roughly the same effect as surfacing the boat, raising the radar mast and firing a flare into the sky while draping a flag that says "Here I am!" over the conning tower I made the rather easy choice to not slit my own throat doing so and instead doing what a Submarine does, Be stealthy.

I have a question. I've never played this game, so I don't know what's involved. I noticed as you were flipping through known noise signatures for classification, there were Humpback and Blue whale noise signatures listed. Do you often or ever encounter a whale during a mission and if you did, could you theoretically fire a torpedo at them and kill them? Just curious.

Not they are not, Those are Grisha III FFG's as you can see on the detail card, FFG stands for Frigate, Guided Missile. As I said in the video while all Grisha class have anti submarine capability as do almost all warships of any type, those Grisha's are dedicated Guided Missile Frigates.
@Piergeiron
@Piergeiron 7 жыл бұрын

@Piergeiron 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the whole FFG-designation is a bit misleading in that they are pretty small ships, too. Still: Soviet ships of that era have been more specialized than their US counterparts. The FFG-7 (O.H. Perry-Class) frigates were "true" multipurpose guided missile frigates and still their main task in battlegroups was dedicated ASW picketing.

@Piergeiron 7 жыл бұрын
While that is very true, you still have to consider the degree in specialization in Soviet warships. Bolting some AAW capability onto a Grisha did't change it's principal role - as, for example, reflected in it's sensor arrays, here: the towed array sonar. (Also the Grisha-I already had the SA-N-4 mounted, where the -II got rid of it in favor of a second 57mm gun) Much like the Sovremennyy- and Udaloy-class destroyers are both DDGs, but the Sovremennyy being the principal AAW and ASuW platform, complementing the Udaloy as an ASW-platform. This is also reflected in the Udaloy's sensor suite, which DOES include the Horse Tail / Horse Jaw hull-mounted / towed array, which is not to be found in the Sovremennyy. Still I think we can agree yo have to work with what units you have on hand anyway and the Grishas in this fight did put up a cool challenge! :D

So is it realistic that the nato forces knew the sonar signature of all those Soviet vehicles? And how would they even go about getting them, and knowing what it is, the name and all?
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
Yes it is actually, There are several ways to get the acoustic profile of a submarine. I can describe for you how NATO got the profile of the Alfa class as an example. NATO forces monitor Soviet ports in much the same way that soviet forces monitor NATO ports. Launching a Submarine is not an easy thing to hide considering they must be built in dry dock and then moved to the water at the very least by a slip way, it's also not a fast thing. In this time the Alfa gets spotted and Classified by NATO intelligence, She is measured and heavily photographed from a safe distance with a very big magnification lens as is every single supply and logistics craft that goes near her. The service and maintenance crews are also photographed as is there equipment. Once analysed these photographs will provide NATO with a model on which to test Alfa's abilities in the water while also giving them a good idea on her internal systems based on what engineering teams where needed to get her ready and the equipment they used, even crew count can be estimated by the number of supplies she took on. From this point Alfa is continually monitored until it leaves port, Once at sea all NATO submarines will be informed of the new Soviet boats existence and will be told to listen for her. In sort order she will be located, she is simple enough to find as she is the only boat in the area that NATO doesn't already have an acoustic profile for, so they record her. Within two weeks of the first Alfa being pulled out of dry dock NATO had her length, beam, crew count, most of her internal systems, torpedo load and torpedo selection along with all countermeasures and missiles and a recording of her acoustic profile for the waterfall. From there her maximum speed and other such details are gained simply by recording encounters with her over time and keeping record of everything. One final thing to note is that the sound of a Submarine can change with age so each encounter is recorded over time, in game we only work out what the boat is. In real life NATO submarine crews can ID a Submarine by name and number due to the different sounds caused by age while also knowing the launch dates of the submarines in that class.

Magz bias IS real, including in war thunder, it's fair enough to ask who made the game because it can make a diffetence. Although here it's more about humans vs AI. Unfortunately it's a combination of relatively easier difficulty of AI vs a human and perfect information (like the way you can guide the torps with a remote camera) make the game a bit too easy. It's a problem with most simulators frankly, silent hunter was super easy too In reality that grisha captain may well have escaped those torps and you might have faced a harsher response. Then again, in reality diesel subs "sink" carriers too. It's unpredictable warfare
