I remember a game of Red Storm Rising, it was effectively end of the war, I had sunk most of the Red Banner Fleet. Final mission was to sink a boomer before it could reach the arctic ice pack to launch its ballistic missiles. I sank the Typhoon, and 3 escorting nuclear boats. Out of torps and the ones you could drop from a missile. One contact left.... it turned out to be a Whiskey class. I was just stunned.

Magz, I believe the reason you keep losing wires is because the angle is too great. I've been watching Jive Turkey play this game (who used to serve on Los Angeles-class subs, btw) and he mentions that if the angle is too great, the wire will break. I just don't remember off the top of my head what angle he said.

Magz, if you want to keep your wire then you shouldn't be firing at targets at such extreme angles. If you care about keeping the wire then you need to fire the torpedo as straight as possible with as little depth deviation as possible. Point the sub at the target. This also makes your signature effectively smaller it would be if you were broadside to the target. There is some wiggle room with how far off the centerline a shot can be and still have an intact wire but it isn't at 90 degrees.

So... why not make subs for ultra deep dives? I'd assume going really close to the bottom and cruising across it would be great for spooking passive or maybe even active sonar... them again, I also doubt sonar is like a time domain radar that can't see the ground.

Madd Endd really? interesting. I wonder why is external because it must effect the radar signature
@MaddEndd
@MaddEndd 7 жыл бұрын
Not really, compared to the tower and the ruder this structure is still pretty insignificant, and I guess you mean sonar signature. The problem is that you cannot fold the cable, otherwise you get the same problem as with the wires from the torpedos, but it also needs to be at a significant distance to the ship and the propeller, so it doesn´t pick up unnecessary noise, inside the sub you don´t have the space for it really. It´s literally the same problem as the drive shaft in tanks like the Sherman, but they decided to make the tank bigger to make it fit. Not an expert though, but that is the most logic explanation I can come up with.

@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
I do use active torps, I just didn't need to use them in these engagements.
@undecided445
@undecided445 7 жыл бұрын
MagzTV Passive torps are pretty lousy against all but the loudest submarines. While they can acquire older subs easily enough (especially if they are cavitating) they have a hard time making their final approach and are often fooled by noisemakers. The issue is that the actual machinery of the sub is fairly quiet, which is what the torpedo is looking for as opposed to all the noisy cavitation around the screw. As a general rule I use active homing against subs and passive against surface ships with exceptions for ships crippled ships with damaged engines and very high ambient noise levels in which case I'll use active homing. The only advantage of passive homing against subs is that the torpedo is harder to detect without it pinging away, but in a knife fight your opponent will be able to hear the launch anyway.
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
This isn't exactly correct, The Mk.48 is exceptional in passive mode and as you can see is quite able to detect even the quiet subs (When my Mk.48 acquired my 688 I was in silent running with the engines at full stop and it still managed to lock me up). It comes down to firing solution, In these engagements I am manoeuvring to get a good solution (65%+) before releasing my fish to begin with so the 48's have no problem finding there target. However if I wanted to fire on a contact with a very low solution (35% or below) that is where you would use active sonar as it increases the chances of the 48 acquiring a good solution of it's own and tracking.
@undecided445
@undecided445 7 жыл бұрын
As I said they can acquire a target just fine the issue is hitting it instead of getting confused by knuckles and noisemakers and looping around. I still take issue with using passives against submarines as one of the last bits of information to be locked-in from a sonar contact is the target's distance and because of echoes off of the seafloor or thermal layer the contact could easily be as much as twice the distance or as little as half what the target plot says at 65%. You could close the distance until the range is resolved or you are so close it doesn't matter but as you found, firing Mk.48s under their ~4,000 yard acquire range is extremely dangerous without wire guidance (which leaves you vulnerable to counter fire). Personally at point blank I snap a torpedo off and flank speed in the opposite direction to get out of the radius ASAP. The other option is wire guidance and guesstimating when you don't have great information. Tubes fire to each side at an angle (unlike in Soviet subs the USN bow sonar takes up the whole nose) and have a comfort zone of about 10 to 30 degrees off of your heading while they complete their wire clearance maneuver, once they have traveled around 500 yards you have a little more room to work with, but more than 45 degrees will probably break the wire. 5 to 10 knots is fine speed wise as long as you aren't turning or diving too quickly. Oh and the UI sorts the tubes so the left hand column fires to the left and the right hand column to the right. As a side note: while under wire guidance the active sonar of a mark 48 can be fed into the fire control system to greatly enhance your firing solution on a target (as long as you can observe the contact with your own sensors.)
@MagzGTV
@MagzGTV 7 жыл бұрын
"getting confused by knuckles and noisemakers " - Knuckles are a defence against active sonar, They provide a "wall" of water that will reflect an active sonar ping. As I mention several times in the video Mk. 48s are programmed to understand what a noisemaker is, when they turn away they are not getting confused, they are designed to turn 60* to the last contact of the target and then swim a half circle back to the targets bearing in order to require the target on the other side of the noise maker. "the issue is hitting it" At this point since starting to play Cold Warters I have over 70 Submarine kills in the 688 and at least 30 of them are on the elite difficulty., In that time I have only ever missed seven targets using passive only total one of which you see in this video. Of those seven shots five where taken with a solution blow 60% and the other three including this one was the result of the Mk. 48 turning back on be due to an aggressive turn by the target and acquiring my own submarine even while running at ultra quiet, A situation that basically was the target using my own submarine as a countermeasure and one that an active sonar would not have changed. The issue you seem to be arguing with me doesn't actually seem to be an issue I am having. But let me continue anyway. "Personally at point blank I snap a torpedo off and flank speed in the opposite direction to get out of the radius ASAP." - To what end? On passive the Mk.48 is capable of acquiring a target at over 5km range on it's own and on active (which you seem to state you use) over 8km, The Mk.48 in game is capable of 45kn (in reality it should be 55kn) faster than any in game sub including the Alfa (currently the fastest in game at 41kn) Your tactic involved firing a Mk.48 at a target within 4000 yards or 3.6km then pointing the nosiest end of the Submarine at the 48 and running at a speed that will make you easily detectable at a distance well inside all of the 48's detection ranges for the result of getting to a maximum speed that will not allow you to outrun your 48 should it turn back anyway. It will also not allow you to outrun a soviet torp should one be fired and will not allow you to get outside of that acquisition range but will make you clearly visible to a fired soviet torp along with any other submarine in the area listening for engine noise and should you turn directly from the target as you said also put said target, a potential soviet torpedo and your own Mk 48 in your baffles where you will not be able to hear them. I'm not sure exactly what your tactic here brings to the table. "As a side note: while under wire guidance the active sonar of a mark 48 can be fed into the fire control system to greatly enhance your firing solution on a target (as long as you can observe the contact with your own sensors.)" - This I know but its not just the active sonar, the passive sonar feed is also sent down the line and it also works in reverse. While the wire is active updated contact information from your own submarine both passive and active is also fed into the Mk. 48.

The explosion of a Mk.48 on the surface would carry enough concussive force that anyone outside the boat would either die instantly or find themselves alive but with fatal organ trauma due to the force of the blast. Remember you are dealing with a weapons system that is designed to destroy a ship by detonating under the hull without contacting it and using the shock-wave generated by the blast to quite literally break the ship in half.
