Always take something for wood processing even if you don't plan on having a fire. Things that are merely uncomfortable the rest of the year can kill you in winter

Great advice guys! I always tell friends to bring lots of "Hot Hands" as well. Bags and quilts can only reflect heat from your body, so after 4-5 hours, your body isn't producing much heat. But with a few well-placed Hot Hands, you will be producing enough extra heat to keep you warm the whole night.

All of my hammock gear quilts from my perspective and experience is for example: my zero underquilt works well at 10 degrees. All their ratings for me are comfortable 10 degrees warmer than their rating. Layers help and changing in and out of those layers often help me greatly. Love the video! Keep shining.

Ive seen a few of these "winter tips" videos lately. Like this one, most have great information, but one very key part has been left out. To preface my opinion I'll say that I've been a backpacker for over half my life, and a decade ago I worked at a professional dog mushing kennel in rural Alaska, and by rural I mean the driveway way 5miles long and it was a 4-5hr drive to the closest store/town-Fairbanks. Something I learned up there was how to manage lith-batteries in sub freezing temps. Batteries will get zapped in temps under 40, and the colder it gets, the faster the drain. With many of us relying heavily on batteries to safe there should be more emphasis on how to keep your batteries from draining. It takes special care, and it is another task to do, but if you're relying on your phone for navigation, an inreach for SOS, a battery bank and headlamp for nighttime tasks then you should probably protect those batteries. Sure, on an overnight or weekend trip it's "not that big of a deal" bc chances are you're not super far from civilization. Now, if you're on a solo trek, in an unfamiliar area and get hit with a snow storm you'll need all of you devices working properly. When temps plummet, I will put my electronics into thick wool camp socks. then take the socks and wrap them up in any other clothes making a ball or square shape, throw in one or two hot hands hand warmers. Then take your camp puffy and wrap up the ball of clothes and put it in bag of some sort. Make sure the bag is large enough that it doesn't compress the down too much. For me, the large size dcf zipper top square style food bag from Garage Grown Gear is perfect. Make sure to pack that cube at the very top of your pack. If anything is on top of it, (like your food) the down will get too compressed and it your batteries could get cold. I used to throw my electronics into the footbox of my quilt with a couple hand warmers, but if you need to get to that stuff, you're unpacking your whole pack, which isn't very efficient. Winter backpacking requires the trekker to look at things completely different than a typical trip. It is rewarding, but it much tougher than normal 3season outings.

Getting ready to head out for my annual 5 day winter trip right after christmas. Should be warmish, lows into the teens at night. The sub-zero trips all the way to minus 20s can be rough.

All great tips for winter backpacking. On my first winter backpacking/snow trip. For the first mile, it was raining. My buddy had a Columbia jacket that wasn't waterproof. (was supposed to be) When we got to camp we hung a line from tree to tree for drying his clothes. We lit the fire close to the line, the heat melted the snow in the two trees. It was like rain again. 😅😂🤣

Hey guys, a big game changer is using a lite weight tech blanket on the floor of your tent. This will greatly diminish condensation. Something water resistant. Check out the Snugpak jungle blanket. Multi functional comfort. I’ve been using this method for a few years and it works great.

Are you talking about a reflective tarp? I haven’t heard the term “tech blanket”

Heat outside coming into the tent. As the temperature rises, the relative humidity drops, it dries the inside of the tent, then oxidizes the fire. It's tricky to get the temperature just right, though. Perhaps employing a temperature-stabilizing bi-metal valve...

I think something to really think about and let settle in is that YOU can very well be the only thing generating any heat out there. Maybe you have hand warmers. Maybe you can boil some water for a Nalgene. But if things go sideways there can be very little in the way of a retreat or a repreve from the cold. So even though it costs you weight bring other things that make heat- like the hand warmers and fuel. But think about how you can trap every little bit of warmth that comes off your body when you're sitting at camp or trying to sleep. You won't be getting it from anywhere else.

I stepped in a ditch and went to sleep with a wet sock. I used a foot warmer, that just glues under your sock. Well worth.

@@bcamping1 oh my gosh, thats definitely a fear of mine, getting my feet soaked in winter. If my feet are cold I am very grumpy, and feel frozen no matter how hot the rest of me is.

My two cents: 1)Several base layers. 2) 3 times the normal fuel ditch the canister for white gas. 3) Closed cell pad on top of air mattress. 4) Three dogs.

Have always avoided winter backpacking just because I hate sitting around in the cold. Camp is kind of a fun part of normal backpacking and it's kind of a bummer to deal with it. Maybe I should try it in some moderate conditions. Do you think a 20f UGQ quilt would be fine for most conditions? Have an Exped R=4.8 pad.
@bcamping1 Жыл бұрын
Just try it camping first, then you'll know. Next time I go out (20f) in couple days, I will take 20f sleeping bag+ 30f sleeping bag. With extherm and downmat7. 6,9+5,9=12,8R
