The block heater warms the coolant that remains in the block not the oil. If it’s getting frigid cold I would recommend an oil pan heater. You can find them online and they have a plug in the same as your block heater. They literally glue to your oil pan and you should run a bead of high temp silicone around the edges. I say this because I use one anytime the temps drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit and my truck purrs when I start her. Also, a timer on your outlet you plug into is a huge help.....I set my timer, plug in the block and oil pan heater and the timer applies power about 2 hours before I go to start. Block heater has nothing to do with oil unless there is a slight heat transfer.

I live in Southern Louisiana where the temperature in winter rarely drops to freezing but a few days a year. In the summer it gets up to the mid 90's. Also I rarely tow anything heavy than a small trailer. Do you still recommend this weight or is there another one that would better suit my climate needs? Thanks for your time. Keith
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
Keith Noneya We are not really concerned about the high temps - your engine thermostat keeps your engine operating at around 200 F. The full-synthetic 5W-30 AMSOIL HDD seems to be the perfect weight oil for the 7.3 and 6.0 engines with the hydraulic/electric injectors. Most customers use it year round in all conditions. For the best price, check out: www.preferred-customer.net .

You guys are thin blood, it doesn't even get cold till about zero, yep it's about all that you said, but there is more when I lived and worked out of Fairbanks, Alaska, it tends to get cold, yes a block heater is a must, and I would suggest that if you live North of the Mason-Dixon line, have one installed! Another thing is that Batteries don't like cold, you can install a battery heater, or do what I do, I take mine in for the night and put them on a trickle charger- I keep two batteries for my car, Its a little extra thing in the morning but hey you are going to have things to do in the morning when its -30F anyway! Full filter heater is also nice to have! Now there is the down and dirty way of getting a diesel to start if you are out to say- Winter Elk hunting, or you are lucky and got a Woodland Bison Tag- You but a tarp over your engine, and you light a small fire under the oil pan, a camp stove would work even better if you got one, in about 30 min you should be able to start you truck or car! It's hard on a vehicle any vehicle! With Airplanes, we would install quick drains for the oil, and we would heat the oil on the stove to warm in up some then pour it back into the engine, and pull them thru a few times and then start, a heated hanger is way better but, out in the bush it's well nope! We would not fly if the outside temp is lower than -35 to 40 in the airplanes we flew, cold soaking, you could not stay warm period! This is just some of the things that are done in the North that you may not know about!

is this chart applicable for a 190 HP International Variant? the T-444E.. seems ot be no love for information on that...
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
The T-444E engine should follow the Ford recommendations rather closely, but the bigger issue is that all of the recommendations for 6.9 and 7.3 engines are rather dated, and don't reflect improvements made to oils since these engines were designed. You can buy a full synthetic 0W-30, 5W-30, or 0W-40 now that can be ran year around in all conditions. These oils were readily available in the 1980's and 1990's.

is running a 0W in an older engine going to run my oil pressure Low on hot days? this engine runs great but runs at about 42 PSI oil pressure on rotella T 15W40 and im concerned I lose oil pressure if i run oils that thin out whne they get warm.. as well as it has a couple very slow seal leaks.. im concerned thin oil turns those into real oil leaks that i'll then have to spend 1000s to fix.. id like to get some more out of it before I tear it apart.. from all indications theres nothing wrong with it.. its just in an older school bus..
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
Reciprocating engines, in general, only need 10 lbs of oil pressure for every 1000 rpms. So 42 lbs of oil pressure is plenty. You are much more likely to damage your engine at start-up with oil too thick than you are with oil too thin at full operating temps. But each engine is unique, and you have to monitor oil consumption - if it jumps way up with a 0W oil, then just start adding a thicker oil until you reach your next oil change, when you move to a thicker oil. I'd stay within the same oil brand / line.

Christopher Abnett advice from Canada. never run your tank below 1/4 tank. I fill at 1/2 and try and stay above half a tank. water sits at the bottom of the tank. I've never had any fuel issues in twenty years of driving transport all over northern Ontario. I run from espanola ontario to chapleau ontario once a day and I see -50c in chapleau in January February often. as for fuel additive you should use it on every tank. small amount is all ya need. 1/4 a cup for 60 litres is what I use
@rogerbrandt66787 жыл бұрын

@Liam407 жыл бұрын
I assume like most Tow/Haul features on trucks, it delays shifting until a higher RPM is reached (To protect the transmission from overheating by constantly switching gears). I don't exactly see it changing tuning, and if it's anything like most other diesels the jake brake is operated separately to the tow and haul function. TL;DR - Delays shifts til higher RPM. May also disable Overdrive.

Is there a downside to using block heater in 40 degrees Fahrenheit? TX doesn't get too cold but I notice a vast improvement in starting if I do use it on chilly nights.
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay - I just saw your comment. Other than the expense for electricity, there's nothing wrong with using a block heater. But if you notice a vast improvement at 40F, you have a weakness in your system somewhere. Areas to check: weak batteries, weak starter, faulty or dirty battery cable connections, glow plugs burned out, glow plug controller malfunction, engine oil too thick. Any one of these can cause a problem. Many older trucks have several of these problems that compound to cause no-start situation on first cold day. By using the block heater on a relatively warm morning, you are tricking your engine into thinking it's a warm spring day!

You didn't mention what engine you have, but if you have a 7.3 or 6.0, then you should be running a full-synthetic engine oil (due to punishment of oil by HPOP and injectors). The AMSOIL 5W-30 HDD oil I featured in the video is the favorite among AMSOIL customers for these engines - and they run it year round, without any problems. The lower viscosity (compared to 15W-40) allows the injectors to function quicker, for faster starts and smoother idle and more responsive acceleration. Here's the link: www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/diesel/series-3000-sae-5w-30-synthetic-heavy-duty-diesel-oil/?zo=1302686&page=%2fstorefront%2fhdd.aspx

Wow, I totally forgot to mention that I have a 1996 Ford F-250 7.3L. That Amsoil is far out of my price range. I know you are an Amsoil dealer but, what do you think about me running the Rotella T6 in my 7.3 in the winter, or year round? Thanks for your reply back.
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
likestovideo93 You may reconsider the price of AMSOIL when you discover that you can run it up to 3x longer than the Ford recommended oil change interval. Calculate the prices on a oil change cost-per-mile basis, and AMSOIL will be the least expensive. IMO, you should be running a full-synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-40 year round.

The recommendations to consider lower viscosity engine oil in cold temps applies equally to 7.3 engines as well. I have many customers who use AMSOIL 5W-30 HDD full synthetic diesel oil in 7.3 engines - and they run it year around, including towing at maximum weight.
@iamcaptainamerica71418 жыл бұрын
I live in indiana. and since I've gotten my 6.0 I've always been told to run t6 15-40. cause those motors are weird with oil. so I need to run a lower viscosity in the winter months? is it OK to switch different makers of oil or do I need to stick with one kind
@Best-Synthetic-Oilscom7 жыл бұрын
Great questions. T6 (full synthetic) 15W-40 is a very good oil, and it will flow better at colder temps than a conventional 15W-40 for sure. If you aren't pulling/towing heavy, then dropping to a lower viscosity in the colder winter months is an easy decision. If you are pulling/towing heavy, then the decision gets a little more complicated. Ford called for 15W-40 at all temps when towing, but that was based on running conventional oil and that recommendation is now over 10 years old. A full synthetic 5W-30 diesel oil, like AMSOIL HDD, will flow down to -58F, and still provide great protection when hot. The hydraulic/electric fuel injectors in 7.3 & 6.0 engines tend to function faster with the lower viscosity oil as well. Regarding switching oils: while I wouldn't make a habit of it, switching really doesn't hurt anything. For example, conventional and synthetic oils will mix just fine, but differences in base oils and additives can create some blending issues, but even these aren't going to damage your engine. Try to stay with same brand, but switching and mixing frequently should be avoided.
