I just saw Taste of Cherry. I didn't know anything about him until someone recently recommended him. The guy's amazing.

He sees so much. A filmmaker to be proud, in some ways honored to have watched. This interview betoken great depth on the part a film giant, alas not well-known in the world outside Persia.

His films are proof that he is true to his vision and what he says here. "Close Up" is a masterclass in understated direction: there is a scene in it inwhich the protaganist is pardoned in court, and you end up crying even though there is no monologue or swelling music to manipulate the emotions so loved by Hollywood. Abbas is more articulate here: when I saw him being interviewed with Mike Leigh a few years back, both of them made for a rather miserable monosyllabic double act- sorry to say.

These words dance like the camera angles in his films.

Chronos کرونوس Yeah, i dont speak farsi but hindi, but zendegi (life) is a common word, and when he says zendegi it doesnt show life many times in the subtitles

No it isn't. The timing is off but it's almost spot on, and if it were a word for word translation it would come off a bit weird.

This is an incredibly late response but I decided to reply anyway for other people to see. This is a 1997 interview conducted by Iranian scholar Jamsheed Akrami.

Mr. Kiarostami, could you please tell me the purpose behind your creation of the film: Shirin (2008)? I don't understand the woman's expression at 6:18 in the film; is it a look of longing for the protagonist of the film on screen, or is it a look of subtle disgust at the fact that she's being filmed watching what appears to be pornography? Thank you for your time, sir, I really appreciate the films you have created for the people of Persia, the United States, and NOWHERE ELSE
