This is also applicable to fathers listening to this song who cannot be with their sons or daughters by no fault of their own. such a beautiful song. when my son was around 5 years old, he really liked listening to this song. he can't understand english, so he was just feeling the song. At some point when we were lying in bed and listening to the song, he asked me what the man was singing about. I explained to him that Chris sings from the perspective of a child. A child who rarely or never sees or knows his father. When I explained the line "daddy it's my birthday" to him, he slowly turned away from me and said nothing more. I asked if everything was okay, but he didn't answer. He secretly shed tears and didn't want to show them. I really felt bad but at the same time it was so nice to see how emphatic he is. I hugged him tightly and we cuddled in silence for a while. His little hands buried in mine. his head underneath my chin.
