The grief that Coldplay gets is unwarranted, it was like a snowball effect with bandwagon jumpers joining in the kicking. They are a superb band that has a lengthy back catalogue of excellent music.

I didn't get Coldplay until I wrote my first good song. Now I can hear exactly how Christ Martin's brain works. Head bursting and on fire with melodies all day long. Same with Noel, McCartney, Weller. Those types.

This song is from Coldplay's first album Parachutes. The band never got any hate until their later more 'pop' song output.

The Parachutes album is banger after banger, and not very 'poppy' IMO. They went 'poppy' after a few albums. But I love the song sparks and trouble. They both feel vulnerable and real.

Agreed! 100%!! It’s a great track!!! Pop, some well is satisfying. Coldplay does pop INCREDIBLY well. Don’t hate on an engineer because they’re logical & good at math, don’t hate on a plumber cause they charge you $75 an hour. Don’t hate on Coldplay because they write amazing pop.

I'm guessing that, as the song says at the outset, yellow means starlight--celestial, beautiful. And his experience of her is all like that.

They made magnificent music; never thought of them as simplistic, not once. People can be such snobs about music. I mean, what is NOT gorgeous about this song? Everyone's a freakin critic, I'd like to see these people write a song as great. "Fix You" is also stunning.

To me, with the exception of a few songs, Coldplay is the ABBA of this era. They have a way of creating 'earworms' and I understand how that's very easy to like for many people. It's vanilla: nobody really hates vanilla, but neither is it a very exciting taste. I've seen them live twice. The first time was on 7th July 2005. Many Brits will remember that date. I have nothing but respect for Coldplay playing that show that night. Chris Martin mentioned during the show how their day had been a roller coaster, trying to get in touch with friends and family at home. Within the circumstances, they did very well. The second time was at a festival, some years later. More show, playing the masses. It's what they do well. But not as convincing anymore from a music perspective.

My interpretation of yellow, as a visual artist, could be 2 things. Yellow represents sunlight and warmth. However, I feel that yellow could also feel like a melancholy interpretation, as in, "not red or blue." Yellow could be meant as more of a sad "pukey" or "creamy sludge" stagnant or lethargic feel. Relating to your melancholy view of it, yellow could represent things not going as well as they seem, passion wise. Colours have different feelings and associations, but this is my take..

i saw a comment on another video that pretty much sums up how i feel about coldplay. in the comment the band is being compared to radiohead, who coldplay is heavily influenced by and who many consider to be a much "better" version of coldplay. "Radiohead is like a 5 Star Wagyu Steak grilled rare with French Butter, homemade flaky Sea Salt & Black Garlic, topped with a soft boiled Egg that has a rich tasting runny Egg Yolk Coldplay is like a nice Reuben Sandwich with Russian Dressing, it ain’t phenomenal or life changing, but it’s simplicity is what makes it appealing, a nice filling meal with great flavor that isn’t too rich for the taste buds, easily digestible but still good." frankly i find a lot of coldplay's music to be great, and i think that those who dismiss them based on their simplicity or derivation are often missing out quite a bit.

CP for me is like Pink Floyd. Its the sum of all the parts that make it special. Made up of amazing individual contributions in terms of instruments, hooks, chops, melody. Maybe it is that dark to light thing you ref and always those minor chords at the optimal time! CP is much more than a rock/pop band. Its deep if you are ready. Many times is subtle if you LISTEN.

Yes, Coldplay seems like a negative meme, but they are great musicians and Chris writes great melodies and sings them with such emotion. I love at least 10 of their songs (in my play list).

I’ve never understood the put-downs. The instrumentation actually sounds like U2 to me. The singer has a good voice. The style is alternative to my ears. The lyrics are fine…..not the best, but certainly acceptable. Perhaps they were considered too “safe”, too “white bread”….. didn’t have the required for “attitude”, so if you liked them, you were automatically a square.

Long ago, I ended up downloading this track called "Bigger Stronger" on Kazaa! It didn't even have an artist name, but I really liked it. Then I remember seeing Coldplay on some TV program.. A Rush of Blood to the Head had just come out - In my room was the song.. I thought it was kinda bland, didn't really like it. But then later I heard Clocks and I really liked it. Started delving into their back catalogue and somehow found Bigger Stronger was like noway!! .. their first album is pretty good.. their second album is pretty good. When I lived in Portgual I saw Violet Hill on tv. bought that album. listened to it a lot on my interrail trip. was the perfect soundtrack to that. In the end, i think they're cool. haven't listened to their newer stuff. sounds shite

Syed - Yet another commenter who is going to say how much he likes their music. Again, like most, I am going to say that the first 4 albums were all great music. And I love their second album (you know - every bands problem - the difficult second album). So for best music, catchy hooks, great melodies just go with the first 4 albums. My wife is nuts for them and I have seem them 5 times live now. The one thing Chris Martin knows how to write is a catchy "stadium" song... Nearly everything they play, the whole frickin stadium is singing along to. Would love to see you do more and for other tracks I would suggest stuff like "Speed of Sound", "The Scientist, "Fix You", "Talk" "Politik", "Clocks", "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face"........ I think that should be enough to be getting along with. Oh yes, and I am one of those old gits (70) who loves your channel... especially the Beatles stuff. Keep on Rocking

Coldplay is one of my all-time favorite band along with Yes and Led Zeppelin......Chris Martin makes me emotional. Chris Martin..man....every time I see him sing or hear him .....I cry....there are some people like Stevie Nick or Art Garfunkel or Jon Anderson...their voice makes you cry.....and they are heavily influenced by John Lennon and The Beatles and U2 and I can hear that influence in their music which he mentioned in several interviews......I get criticized by other people for liking the group.....however, these folks really don't understand music...I like band in the 21st Century that release or create music from playing on Raw or real instruments using real or authentic vocals in the studios....No Fake computerized stuff....And they do that for me....the lyrics are so poetic...and positive about Love and Happiness as this song, "Yellow" mean Happy or Positive and it like he's talking personally to me and other. Very intimate. Like it!!! Hard to be depressed listening to Coldplay.. Good reactions!!!!

Some music you love when it comes out, all nice and very Fresh. But then they don't hold up so well. But I watched all of this, because it was my way of voting "YES‼️" for more diversity on the channel. More diverse genders as lead vocalist, music from diverse decades, and diverse musical genres. I love that, so much. I mean, we have all seen The Who, Led Zep, etc songs, reacted to 3-5 times in the last 3 years (at least!). So spread the music from those 🌟 star bands way out like this, and I'll be quite happy.

Wow. There's not much else I can add that hasn't been said in all the other comments already. You guys all pretty much nailed it: great new band 20+ years ago, "Bends" era Radiohead knock-offs, but done so brilliantly, catchy pop hooks with an infectious vocalist, and finally, sadly, progressively diminishing returns over the last fifteen years or so. I loved their music early on and they started to lose me around the fourth album or so. I think their success ruined them, It was like watching a great athlete get a huge contract--- and then tank. Very disappointing. That being said, I'm also a huge fan of their early B-sides. There are some brilliant tracks among them. I remember making a CD of all their B-sides about 20 years ago and it was damn near my favorite album of theirs. Anyways, keep up your great reactions and analyses of all this great music, Syed, You're the best!

Classically yellow stands for cowardice. I don't know how well that fits with the song, though. . You ask is it basic or is it good -- why not both? Simple can be wonderful if it's done well, and this song is defintely done well. I'm not a huge Coldplay fan, but I've enjoyed what I've heard of them.

Coldplay arrived around the same time as Travis and Starsailor - all filled a gap in a weak market. Travis and Starsailor came and went as you'd expect, but somehow Coldplay ended up a huge band way beyond what their music deserves. I think they got incredibly lucky with the timing of their first two albums which were both good (not great). 'Yellow' is a very good song, though. If you're looking at the 2000s, Kasabian and Franz Ferdinand should be your next stop.

Coldplay is one of my favorite bands and i don't really get the hate. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a fantastic album, I consider it one of the greats. Also, i don't get the argument their songs are too simple, there's a lot of really interesting sounds in their songs, and the lyrics are no more simple than any other band out there. I do think certain songs got WAY overplayed on the radio, to the point even I didn't like listening to them anymore. Clocks in particular, i can only listen to that song occasionally since it was way overplayed. But there are so many other songs that are just so good, the sound is so interesting. I don't think there's a song on any of their albums I hate. I have some I like more, but seriously, if I ever bought a Coldplay album i knew i was most likely going to like the whole thing. If you don't like Coldplay, that's cool, music taste is varied. But yeah, I've always loved their music, and I really don't get the hate. They aren't like Nickelback (no offense to Nickelback fans, haha!).
