Another interpretation, for what it's worth: This song is about a long distance relationship. The main character visits his hometown for the first time after having moved away, and reminisces about the time he was there, and what he could do then that he cannot now that he is far away. ‘Cloud Rider’ is a metaphor for the distance he has to cross, both physically and through time, to return to what he wishes he were living. He never actually ended up confessing to the girl he loved, and left before he could get his feelings across. In fact, she must have said something to him that brought reality crashing down on him, possibly along the lines of never seeing him as a romantic interest in the way he wanted her to. He still has feelings for her even now, and he’s lamenting his lost chance, and when he debates telling her now and escaping reality, the line she says over the phone breaks his illusion. The whole song is pretty much him trying to escape the reality that he’s been forced to see and live through, by trying to return to a time in the past he longs to go back to, before his regrets begin.

I have watched this video so many timesm its great! a theory of mine is that his GF got hit by a car and one shoe represents her. also at 0:43 you can see him looking at the reflecting in the mirror, you see him with medals and someone holding flowers like someone in a funeral. also if you see in some parts you see him on the floor with one shoe off like he got it and he survived, also sometimes one of the shoe is darken. at the end he had to commit suicide to be with her!

i think this song is about the guy who dream is to be a runner. He had a girlfriend who supported him to achieve the dream. She bought him the green sport-shoes. but the guy started to neglect her after he won a tournament or something( 0:40 , the guy was reflecting his past and u can clearly see the girl reaction at the back). the guy may had separated from her, and each time she called him asking when he will come back, he didn't answer her (1:50, he is engrossed with running at that time)

All I could understand was that someone he loved when he was in school left. He went to find her, but despite all his attempts, he failed. For my own perspective, I think the boy realized that he is waiting for someone who will not return anymore, a person who is already dead.
