I don't want to buy one to put only Coleman brand cans which are not found everywhere but I would like to know if the lamp works without problem with 95 or 98 unleaded gasoline? Thanks !
@WiggysWilderness Жыл бұрын
You can run unleaded gasoline but I don't recommend storing them with gas in the tank. Gasoline varnishes up when it ages, which can cause a lot of problems. It will also shorten the life of the generator tube, but those are replaceable. I recommend running a few cap fulls of Seafoam in your gas to keep everything running smoothly.

@WiggysWilderness6 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. Some of the parts are interchangeable and some aren't. The generators are two different sizes so that effects the burner tubes and valve assembly. The founts, pump assembly, vent, adjustment knob, and fuel/air tube should be interchangeable.

Got it but will the hide get all stiff or will it stay soft after the borax
@WiggysWilderness7 жыл бұрын
The borax helps the hide dry out and the hide will be stiff as a board when it's fully dried out. Once you get it saturated with egg yolk and work it around in your hands for a few hours, the oils in the yolk will break down the stiff fibers and make the hide soft.

Sometimes they're stuck when you get them if they've sat for years. Your best bet is to use a kitchen torch and heat up the brass behind the knob until it can turn. Once you get it moving a few times it should be good after that.

Not fast but consistently...about once every second and a half. Does it at all brightness levels. New fuel no effect. Cleaned the generator and ran a brush through the burner tube and mixing chamber. This thing could not be cleaner but for the life of me I cannot figure out why it pulses. Any ideas? I have a 286 and 295 that do not do this so I am quite baffled.

One more question why was your pelt not stiff in the video when you took it of the borax
@WiggysWilderness7 жыл бұрын
It was. I may not have shown it very well but they're all stiff when they're dry because they've turned into rawhide. They'll remain stiff like that until they're saturated, then they'll be pliable again. You move it around and stretch it to break down the fibers so that it'll stay soft even when it's dry. If you didn't do that, it would turn stiff again once it's dried out again.

Either the generator is loose, or it's plugged and should be replaced, or it's "flooding" which could be caused by a bunch of things. Take the burner assembly off and reattach the generator to the valve assembly and pump it up and turn the knob to get the fuel going. If fuel doesn't come out of the oriface at the top of the generator, the generator is plugged and you should replace it.

It went inside the brass generator tube. It should be a tube of cardboard with a long skinny spring. The pricker wire that hooks onto the eccentric block on the valve assembly runs inside the cardboard tube and all of that (the spring, cardboard tube, and pricker wire) is what makes up the inside of the generator.

When i have the mantle assembly on, no (liquid) fuel comes out. I havent tested it with a mantle yet cause I dont want an open concept Molotov in my backyard. all im trying to figure out is if its normal. thanks :)
@WiggysWilderness5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like when you have the burner assembly off the lantern, there is liquid fuel coming out of the valve assembly when you pressurize the tank and turn the control knob? That's normal. When the burner assembly and generator tube are installed, the fuel will travel from the valve assembly up through the generator and down to the mantles. When he mantles are lit, they heat up the generator and it turns the liquid fuel into a vapor, which burns inside the mantle and reacts with the mantle material and gives you a bright white light.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I've only used electric lanterns as an adult.

you can safely use it without the pricker, but it will clog the jet and you will need to remove generator/ and clean manually. also if it does NOT have a heat sheild, make on from sheet metal.

I have the model 288 and I can not get it to pressurize when I pump it up..... what could be the problem?
@WiggysWilderness5 жыл бұрын
If the pump is working the way it should, then it probably needs a new fount cap gasket. In some sporting goods stores (like Academy) you can find a whole new cap for fairly cheap. If you have another Coleman lantern or stove, try swapping the cap and see if it'll hold pressure then.
@sadiehl645 жыл бұрын
Wiggy's Wilderness it was a bad pump. Will pressurize now but I have no flow through the lantern. It sounds like it wants to work but just a gurgling sound when I turn knob on.....
@WiggysWilderness5 жыл бұрын
Probably the fuel air tube clogged then. The best way to get to it is to disassemble it down to the valve assembly. Stick the valve upside down in a vise and grab the bottom of the fount and turn it like a steering wheel until the valve assembly unthreads from the fount. The fuel air tube will unthread pretty easily from the valve assembly, and there will be a wire and a spring in there. You can clean each one and the tube and reassemble and it should work then. Another option you can try is dumping a hand full of BB's into the fount and shake it around for 15 or 20 minutes and then flush it out until the water comes out clean, then flush it out a few times with clean fuel. It may be enough to get it flowing again.

How would this lantern work with Kerosene? With no filter, it seems like it would be ok?
@WiggysWilderness6 жыл бұрын
It probably wouldn't light up. Kerosene lanterns require a pre-heat cup around the generator tube. You put some alcohol in the pre-heat cup and light it, and that heats up the generator tube enough that it can vaporize the kerosene so you get an efficient burn. I'm pretty sure these can be converted to run off kerosene though.
