I saved two lanterns from the dump that were in one box. One is a 200a marked 8 59 and a 228d nickel tank. Both are completely full of mud wasp nests. Now I know what to do with them! I promise these neat old lanterns will live again! That 228d is about 70 years old? Not garbage!!! Thanks brother

Wiggy's Wilderness Great video. I have a problem pressurizing the tank. First pump with my thumb over the hole it feels like it already has 20 or 50 psi. even with the filler cap off. With my thumb off the hole it slides in and out freely. The gasket is not torn and is oiled. Any clues?
@fl59665 жыл бұрын
@@hammeredscout When that happens to mine it's that I don't have the actual pump part unscrewed enough, which is one full turn. I like to try to cheat so I don't have as much to tighten after it's pumped up. I know it's an old comment, but it might help someone just seeing this video.

Good video. Damn wasps!! They're a very common problem if you have to store your lanterns where insects can get to them. I had refurbished an OLD 1940s Coleman 2 burner stove that had been in storage for decades. It had the cast iron burners. Got it looking almost like new and when I fired it up, no soup for me! Big yellow flames. I had cleaned the generator inside an out, disassembled and cleaned the valve and fuel/air tube, and derusted the outside of the burner casting, so it had to be an air obstruction. Sure enough, there were literally thousands of tiny desiccated spider skeletons in the casting. There were dirt dauber nests in the case when I got it. I was told that those little spiders are the favorite delicacy of dirt daubers and they will cache them near their nests. Wasp experts please feel free to comment on this. I've seen them in lanterns and stoves before, but not in that quantity. Love the old fuel fired camping stuff.

Great video! Also they need to be oiled where the pump plunger is. The packing washer will dry out and cause it to not hold pressure. Just a light 3n1 oil or penetrating oil. I found it out on my Coleman stove. Luckily I didn't have to buy a new one.

As a side note Dirt Daubers are one of core reasons aircraft experience instrument failure as they love to build nests that obstruct the Pitot tubes (Used to read the aircraft's critical air speed) those wasps "and pilot procedure error" are responsible for the crash into the ocean of Birgen Air Flight 301. Dirt wasps and spiders also love to plug up the venturi air mixing inlet tubes of just about any gas appliance.

Thank you so much for this video. I removed and cleaned the generator, but still no air flow. I am confident that there is probably some deeper cleaning ahead. We have plenty of wasps and dabbles in Texas, too. I bet that's the problem since this lantern worked flawlessly last year. Thanks again!
@WiggysWilderness8 жыл бұрын
If you take the generator out and pump it up and crack the valve and turn the cleaning lever, and you're not getting fuel flowing out of the valve body where the generator was, then you probably have a plugged fuel air tube. If you take off the frame, burner, and knob, you can put the valve body in a vice and turn the tank like a steering wheel to get the valve body out, the fuel air tube will be on the bottom and should thread off of the valve body easily. There will be a spring and needle in there, those should drop out and then you can clean the tube with some carb cleaner and compressed air. If you get get fuel flowing from where the generator was, then the problem is probably a plugged burner assembly, probably a bug nest in the mixing chamber in the upper part of the burner tubes. Hope this helps!
@reyscottm98 жыл бұрын
Definitely have good flow up to generator, but alas, everything is clean. Time to replace the generator, methinks. Thanks for the hospitality thus far.
@WiggysWilderness8 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, if you're getting fuel from the valve body and the burner tube and mixing chamber are clean, the generator is the problem. They're good for about 100 hours of use or so. They can be rebuilt if you have the stuff, but it's usually just easier to buy another one. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have two Coleman dual fuel lanterns, a 295 model I've had for a good while which seems to work fine and I recently acquired a 290 model which is the one I'm having problems with. The issue is that I cannot seem to pressurize the tank and therefore it just doesn't light properly or if it does just about get going it soon stops! I reckoned that the likely issue was a loss of pressure at either the filler cap (losing pressure) or the pump end not working properly (not gaining pressure). To try to narrow things down with the parts being interchangeable between the lanterns I decided to swap the pump and the filler cap from the good lantern to the bad lantern to see if this cured it, if it did I could then work out which component was faulty. Yes, you've guessed, swapping these components, both of which must be good because they work on the other lantern, the second lantern will still not come up to pressure :-( Where do I go from here? Can you give me any advice, please? Thank you!

Great video. I love my Colemans and use one even now that my grandfather used when I lived in Alaska from the 60's. I currently have a check valve problem and the tank won't hold pressure....suggestions?
@WiggysWilderness7 жыл бұрын
Check valve problems are very common with old lanterns that haven't been used in many years. Usually they're just dirty and a good cleaning will bring them right back to life. Unfortunately, I've never been able to really clean one fully without using a check valve removal tool to completely take the valve out, and that tool is pretty expensive. Usually if the tank isn't holding pressure, the first culprit I look for is the fount cap gasket. Those are fairly easy to swap out and can be ordered from Old Coleman Parts (along with the check valve tool if they're in stock). If it has the old three piece fount cap, many people feel safer replacing it with a newer single piece cap to further ensure that it won't leak, but that's up to you. You might also check out the Coleman Collector's Forum, the guys on there can walk you through any repair on just about any lantern you have!

I haven't known the bugs to get in to the area of the mantles, I think the area that I was talking about screening off was the area of the air or the oxygen part of the air has to go through in order to supply because there are tubes that allow air and fuel Vapors to pass through
