Mine was clogged up with gunk from old fuel sitting in it. I took out the plunger and rod,then sprayed the check valve with carb cleaner. Let it set for an hour or so,then used some mig welding wire size 0.30 and pushed down on the metal ball inside the valve. Some carb cleaner came out because the tank had some pressure in it. But it freed up the ball in the valve and got my lantern working again! I need to buy that check valve removal tool,comes in real handy for removing valves in lanterns and stoves.

Well done, I enjoyed this. I made my own removal tool with my lathe and milling machine. I had one particular stubborn valve that just didn't stop leaking even after the carb cleaner and a good vinegar boil. I figured the .125 ball must be pitted from rust. I ordered 100 of them from ebay for about 7 bucks just to experiment. I think if I would have just changed the ball it would have done the trick but I tried to refine the check seat by tapping a ball into it with a punch and a hammer. It just made it leak even worse even after putting a new ball in it. Now I know what not to do :-) Thanks for the video and God bless.
@colemanrestorationsrepair41719 ай бұрын
I had never thought about trying to change the ball. My friend has a 500 that I have removed the check valve and boiled and flushed a couple of times, and it's still leaking. I was thinking it was probably leaking through the threads, but I'm really not sure now. If you have success changing the ball, let me know. That's if it can be done without specialized tools. Thanks for watching, and God bless.
@aktrapper61269 ай бұрын
@@colemanrestorationsrepair4171 Its not difficult to change the ball, A small punch that fits inside the hole that goes through the check valve housing drives the old ball out easily. After I installed the new ball I just made a small square ended punch that I could re-produce the factory type punch marks that keep the ball in.

Good informative video. I usually drop the check valves in Muratic acid for a couple of minutes to remove any rust on the check ball itself. Then I let them sit for a couple of days in lacquer thinner. Then a 15 minute soak in a sonic cleaner. Works wonders for a Coleman check valve.
@colemanrestorationsrepair41712 жыл бұрын
That should do the trick Thanks for watching and God bless .

Wow - that is an impressively complex regime. I can only assume that replacement valves are expensive or hard to find.

@@occamraiser It's just things shop people do to see if they can "save" something. However, The valves themselves can be found and purchased for a fair price.
@mikemorgan5015 Жыл бұрын
@@occamraiser You can only assume? Do we know what happens when we ass-u-me? I have an alternative solution. Google, Coleman(your model number here) check valve, and hit "ENTER". I personally recommend the valve and stem if you can find it. Usually around 10 to 15 bucks. It's not complex once you've done it. I have a feeling he slowed way down so he could explain as he did it. You can remove one in about 15 seconds with the tool. You spend way more time spraying carb cleaner than you do actually removing and replacing. If you're not a tinkerer, you can send it back to Coleman and they'll repair it for a very reasonable fee. FYI: That google thing works for lots of other things you may wonder about. Just be careful where it's coming from. Strange times we live in.

wonder if you could use carb cleaner to clean carbon out of a comeman stove generator when it gets gummed up?
@colemanrestorationsrepair41713 жыл бұрын
Haven't had much luck with that. If you can get the generator apart a 22 cal cleaning brush works wonders. If it has to much carbon to get it apart heat it red hot with a torch and quench in water and repeat multiple times until it comes apart.

My 237 has the screws holding in the pump. They were stripped out by the original owner. It works OK, but I don't like it. Does the small wire bail of later lanterns fit the early lantern screw dimension such that I could just replace my screws with a bail?? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

So you mean I can't get that out with a big flat head screwdriver?
@colemanrestorationsrepair4171 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes you can without any problems but if it's a stubborn one the brass is really brittle and most likely it will chip away or break. I really wouldn't recommend it. I had to learn the hard way. Once this happens it nearly impossible to remove and if you can get it out you will need a new check valve. Thanks for watching and God bless.

The old style ones didn't have an o ring, newer style ones do..... however, both styles are interchangeable... if your old lantern has a old style one you can replace it with an new one that has the o ring....... the military coleman lanterns have a unique check valve, if you need to replace one of those you need the tool to remove it.. if you damage the check valve in a military lantern you won't find a replacement.
