I am working in my mansion, fully restoring it. Due to rotten boards, 30 years of bird poop, and lack of engineered design, my mansion's incredible attic needs a complete rebuild. With the help of a few simple tools, strong hands, great friends, and a positive attitude, I try to rebuild the incredible, massive, dream attic.

Think twice about that cathedral overlook. I lived w one of those. Impossible to clean and change bulbs or dust a ceiling fan. Also, heat rose (could change your HVAC calculation), created a weird draft & condensate formed at the peak. Suggest you build it such that you can fill it in if you find similar issues. But…I LOVED THE DRAMATIC TREE TOP VIEWS FROM THERE. A wonderful spot! Good luck!

@@warrenmichael918 Well, warm air expands upwards? To keep the bedroom warm you have to heat it from the ceiling of the attic down to the floor- instead of just heating up to the bedroom ceiling. You have to fill the attic with heat before you get the same temperature all the way down to the bedroom floor. Good when it's too hot, bad when it's cold. Just the laws of physics.

Disagree. Loosing a lot of floor space. Plus as you know heat rises. So in order to keep the attic area from getting too hot to use, the second floor will have to stay uncomfortable cool. Everyone I know that has high ceilings has realized what it cost to heat (just for looks) and say they wish they didn’t do high ceilings and lofts.

Usually, the rule is based on the amount of conditioned floor area, and contractors in many areas generally use the rule of 1 ton of air conditioning capacity for each 400 to 600 square feet of floor area. The rule is usually specified in square feet per ton (sq. ft./ton) - you need about 8 tons or 2 4 ton units. i would just go with a couple mini splits and then also use heat exchangers plus pos pressure hepa - no more dusting - the hvac pros are going to do a ton of vents and air carriers - mostly unneeded as the hosue is going to be 68-70 all year round. put one heat echanger in basement and one in third floor - you can run both or vary them according to season for max efficiency - they are 90% efficient which means you will not lose much heating or cooling but have good air recirc plus it will be hepa filtered - air will always be going out of the house/no infiltration

Wait....a balcony overlooking the second floor??? You have BOYS....adventurous BOYS....you realize you are giving them a throw-whatever-over-the-ledge space????? Just warning you now...and giving the family opportunity to put together a pool with day/age/object options down the road!!!!! Hahahahahahahaaaa

In the attic-where the roof comes down too low to stand, put up walls to close it off. Put in doors that open like cabinets and use it for storage for out of season clothes, christmas decor, etc. Stuff can be out of the way and out of sight without having to lug everything up from the basement and take up all the usable basement space.

Very nice change to open up some of the third floor. Hope the new technology can help with heating/cooling. It’ll be beautiful. Those windows definitely need to be enjoyed.

Cole I know I mentioned before when you were taking down bricks then drywall then paneling and now it probably after the fact it. But i will suggest it again now that you are taking down more of the Attic: Please put down tarps below where you are dropping stuff down. The Tarps will catch most of the debri/stuff. Then all you have to do is fold up the tarp and drag it to the truck or a bin and empty it in there. It would save you so much time from having to clean up the floors so often and so much. And it would save your back from having to bend over so much picking it all up. It doesn't have to be a big tarp. Just one or two in strategic places that you can handle carrying or dragging outside or to a window to dump out. Work smarter not harder!

It is too late to restore what has been destroyed. Remodel yes rebuild defiantly. They have obliterated the floor plan and with that the character and feel of its history.

@@greghamann2099 Yeah its a shame what Cole are doing to this place for youtube fame. Usually you try to keep your farm house in the family so it doesn´t get gutted by an outsider who doesn´t car about house history or familys legacy. Maybe its different but in my area if you take over the family house you are more of a custodian than an owner.

Cole and Nava, couple of thoughts on the open attic- idea put a walkway alway around so you can access all your windows in attic, another idea put built in storage either draws or bookshelves on outside and have a few doors to access behind for more larger storage or play area for the kids on all the short walls so you have plenty of headspace, next idea put a safety/play net over the opening it will keep all children and adults safe and place to play, read and hang out. Concern I thought you where going to put you air conditioner in the attic floor with all the venting going through the floor what happens to that idea loose your floor means loosing your venting, concern about heating and cooling plus humidity and air filtration to keep down pollen and dust you need to reengineer this drastic change in design. Concern height of railing please check the codes and consider material choice- you got dry wall, glass, but consider metal as well- you get the see through effect and heat and cooling flow depending on the design could be safer and if you put up cargo netting maybe easier access to it. Concern the second floor did you plan a big area already that would below this open attic area or it a small hall way and now all the bedroom will be open, they will not be private or quiet but instead all open and no privacy, did you also account how it will effect heating/cooling the bedrooms since it will be open to the attic. Cole did you ask Nava if she wants the open attic? If you keep it open or not it your family decision just reengineer for changes made for your family needs, health and safety. Love your channel. Keep it going.
