Huge success!! Just tried it today. Was hesitant like previous post so I just used the Colgate on a small portion of a 5 inch scratch (which was not deep and probably not deep enough into the paint and only into the clear coat). Used a teeth whitening Colgate with baking soda and peroxide and I can no longer see the scratches. Thank you for this posting and saving me perhaps $200.

This video saved a great deal of my rav4's front fender and bumper today. I was horrified when I hit the garage door while backing up this morning from my garage and scraped a huge part of the front fender and part of the bumper on the driver's side. There were huge scratches and white paint transfer all over. I panicked and immediately went to youtube for diys to fix the scratch and I found this video. I rubbed the scratch with tooth paste for almost 30-45 minutes re applied the colgate 4-5x and it was a miracle. Thank you so much.

I used this product on my rental car to fix light scratches on the bottom of the car skirt caused by a curb. It worked surprisingly well-the scratches are either gone or barely visible. This is definitely a great short-term solution for minor scratches, but I wouldn't expect it to last long-term. Overall, I highly recommend it for quick fixes.

colgate *MIGHT* do a little but the reason it worked in the video is because its a clear coat scratch… pouring water on a clear coat scratch makes it look like it disappears because water is filling the scratch so the light reflects off of it like there is no scratch. once the water drys, the scratch will come back. I doubt colgate is a permanent solution, but, worth a shot I guess.

I have the same luck using WD-40. Scratches are gone in a few seconds. I will try this method though because toothpaste is cheaper than WD-40 is nowadays, LOL.

I use regular Colgate, baking soda, table salt and about 2 tablespoons of Pepsi or coke for the headlights. I use WD-40 and a cloth or better Mr. Clean pad with the WD-40 to get the paint off from another car scratching it and leaving paint on the car. Let WD-40 sit on it for about 10 secs before rubbing off. Cover other areas of car near the scratched area with newspaper using masking tape (not a heavy tape)to hold to keep it clean.

Applying water to a clear coat scratch will make it temporarily disappear. After it dries, however the scratch is still there. So how are we supposed to tell if the scratches are gone when water is continually being applied? I'm sure that some scrubbing with toothpaste (a lot more than shown in the video) would help reduce the appearance of the scratch since the toothpaste is slightly abrasive but it's not going to happen in three minutes.

Great video !!! im gonna try this because I have paint transfer and top coat scratches. I watched several videos and it seems that toothpaste greatly improves the appearance of or removes most of the scratch depending on the severity even after the vehicle is dry. I also have heard that toothpaste is good for headlight restoration. Thanks for the video. Anyone who shares knowledge trying to help others is a great person. Someone mentioned buffing compound which works but EVERYONE has toothpaste in their home making it convenient and it is much cheaper.

They sell small amounts of touch up paint at the dealership. Not expensive at all but very small amounts. For those tiny spots

Car still wet how do I know. Plus you csn see the scratches as he tried to dry wipe the toothpaste off. And what about the 3 big black pieces were the paint was all ready gone, you did not want to fix those with toothpaste?

Actually a buffing compound is cheaper than toothpaste per oz and works better.
