I've had a lot of experience in amateur theatre, and I can tell you-even there, where the whole point is to do it "for the love of it" (that's literally what the word amateur means), you will encounter divas who make the experience unpleasant. Having experiences like that is awful, but it teaches you a useful lesson in exactly how *not* to behave. Exactly the attitude you must never, *ever* allow yourself to take. Although amateur theatre, being what it is, tends to be very friendly on the whole. A lot of people who are more like Colin. The divas stand out, because of how few and far between they are. And then word gets around and that diva is never brought on to do another show in the area.
@doctorwhoproductions83426 күн бұрын
@ I do a lot of amateur theatre as well and that is exactly what is, these people are giving up their free time after work for a few hours of fun acting, when you get snobby ones or ones that belittle you, it’s a horrible feeling, I always make the point of welcoming people and saying bye as they leave, just so they know they don’t just come and go without anyone seeing them

I have a lot of admiration for Colin Baker, especially after watching the extras for the Trial of a Timelord season. He comes across as a wonderful warm, amiable, insightful and generous person who is as kind about co-stars as he is tactful and polite about less harmonious behind the scenes elements of the show. Always philosophical, never bitter... and his final thoughts about "Carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice..." being as meaningful as any other exit he could have had made me laugh.
@triplejazzmusicisall1883Ай бұрын
Exactly never bitter, other than maybe one week after being fired (most of us one never have gotten over that). From then on he has amazed me with how kind and forgiving he is. And as you mention he is never bitter where most would be. He deserves all the accolades he receives both for his great incarnation as the Doctor and also as the wonderful decent and accomodating fellow he is.
@paulosborne6517Ай бұрын
@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 ...and I agree entirely with his reasoning for not filming a regeneration. It wasn't out of spite as people think, OK - maybe a tiny bit, but what a cheek to fire him and then ask..! Colin was far more concerned with the stress and falsehood of having to pretend he was still The Doctor during the hiatus, until he had filmed the regeneration with the new Doctor firmly in place. Imagine being contractually bound to carry on smiling and being the Doctor all the way until Time and The Rani was filmed. [plus not being able to take up other roles meanwhile], only to appear for a couple of seconds! I think Colin was quite right to refuse, unless they gave him one final season as notice. I think he even compromised as far as just one full story to set his exit. Of all the remaining classic Doctors, Colin is the one I would most like to meet... and I grew up on Tom Baker [who was apparently wretched to co-stars and production staff for the last half of his tenure].

I'm a gentleman and not drunk enough to say who I aren't fond of. Colin and Sylvester have the underdog thing going for their doctors which everyone will appreciate at some point. My first glimpse of Colin Baker as the Doctor came from one of Peter Haining's books, and I remember being immediately intrigued by his presence and baffled by the horrific costume assigned to him (although I wasn't aware of JN-T's foisting it upon him back then). A couple of years later I had the great good fortune of attending a DW convention in Austin, TX in which Colin and Jon Pertwee were the guests. That was where I first saw "The Caves of Androzani" and "The Twin Dilemma," and that weekend was when he became my favorite Doctor.

I will never understand why Colin Baker was abruptly removed from Doctor Who in the 1980s. His Doctor brought something new to the character. His Doctor had post traumatic stress from an abrupt regeneration, which made him a little mad to begin with, and then become a rather loveable Doctor Who loved life and cared about Peri and Mel very much.
