This hit so many weird notes with me. I started aggressive skating in my 40s, and 3 years in I’m wondering what I want to get out of it. I’ve got my foundation but I’m too old to aim to get sponsored, I have kids and don’t want to break myself off on a street rail for glory and I’m also not reliving past memories. So I’m also searching for a goal that’s not well defined 🙂 I start every session with I’m grateful to have wheels on my feet.

If you focus on style, consistency and trick vocabulary (in that order) then I think you'll have plenty to focus on and keep you going.

For me it is ultimately just for fun. It's a creative way to exercise and a way to let go and forget the stressful things in my life.

I thank you three fellas for the time you spent in in good conversation in front of us! I agree we get prideful with movements and other factors that other activities have been doing for years. Anyway thanks for going deep, much appreciated.

When Ben talks about gratitude @59:59 - that's a mad one. Cause how would you know how to express that if you haven't felt true love, and the emotions involved with all of that? I've just begun to feel what Love could (emphasis on could) be, again. And it makes me cry till it hurts. It's too overwhelming to deal with. I think that's when escapism comes in to play - addictions, etc. We are brought up to 'believe' what love is from an external point of view ie: TV, media, etc. When thus is not what that is. Gratitude also. If you can't feel love, you cannot give gratitude. IMHO. Big up you lads. And BIG YO' SELF UP TODD on the comments regarding family saving you. Nothing butt respeckt.

01:20:25 - ok, i am typing as watching this podcast. I feel you on that CK - Crying. It shows passion. From my own experience, i have had to supress my love/passion based upon societal standards, and not my own. Seemingly, that emotion is as a weakness. And that led to escapisms/addictions/beefing. Only now am i once again starting to be able to cry and live with that beautiful gift of shedding a tear. Thank you ever so much for sharing this. It's very important.

In regards to crying and feeling - i think that also can reflect on how one skates/edits. I truly put my heart in to what i create, with what my heart is able to provide at that time (depending on if it's been fucked in the past by addictions). Compare the 57/89 Bower Dirt Box to Sweet Shin Music for example. Heart in different places. Consumption of life in different places.

01:32:14 - In regards to absolutism. The one thing that IMHO can be lacking in a clip/trick, is the love of belief in ones self when doing a trick. With more emphasis on ego on the execution of the trick to prove oneself. Which can downgrade the overall aesthetic of the trick. Again, just an observation with certain people or clips.

"the infinite.....the infinite!!!" Also, as a teacher of very young people, yes it is wild as fuck, and while you do get to help and show how and watch someone grow....a lot of the time you're gonna tell em something and they're gonna see something completely different, and sometimes it'll be something you never even thought of before; because they don't have the same eyes as you. It's true that you learn a lot from kids, it's not always what you'd expect though. Also of course, sometimes they see the other thing from what you're trying to show them..........and it's just plain frustrating as hell. Kids live so fast though there's always tomorrow....or likely 10 minutes from now. For that reason, teaching's a very good way to slap down that ego too, haha!!

I can definitely relate to that existential questioning of this eight wheeled pursuit we share and often find this middle aged skate renaissance we're in to be tricky to explain its collective passionate zeitgeist and daily appeal, to outsiders. All that said, i am however very grateful for skating and owe so much to it. My love, so many friends and memories and a connection to something of my youth i once thought lost, all things i could never put a price on. i have goals with my skating and accomplishing, or at least progressing towards accomplishing, said goals helps motivate me to keep pushing, go a little faster, get back up quicker, be more stylish or creative and what not to continually try to improve so that i can finally skate as i imagine i can skate and i can live my dreams, awake, on wheels. So i guess, the purpose of skating to me is to live and express the radical notion that is that awareness of life, awake, through movement and joy. Joy through which we remember the beauty of everything, a funky rail, a concrete bank, could carve down fakie, could land to flat, everything can be skated and if not, get wax.

My question is how far can you push on stock stuff? Is there a point where upgrading from how my skate came out of the box is the only thing holding me back? I mean I upgraded wheels immediately but everything else is the same.

you can have hardware incompatibilities. For example a few years ago I experienced how USD comes out of the box with almost no backside groove. you have to make it yourself how you want it. If you didn't know to put more of a backside groove into the soul plate, your tricks won't lock. so I struggled very much with acids and royales until I tried Razors which have gratuitous backside grooves.
