that's why I love the english language, it has so many straight forward expressions that I just can't find in my native tongue - not even 'small talk', looked up the suggestions on wiki 'Plauderei' - really? and none of them worked for me (being german, said to be very flowery and explaining with long words but at the end of the day it has nothing on english). having lived in NYC for nine years I still live, breathe, dream, think in english, even after 15 years being back in germany the words i am looking for always come back first in english, it is just the best language!!!!

I'm really bad at smalltalk because if someone would start talking to me about how awful the rain is my first instinct is to inform them about that we now have zero rain that isn't polluted with "forever chemicals" *everywhere* on the planet, even places humans have never set foot. No rainwater can be classified as safe anymore. So yes, Deborah, the rain is indeed awful and it's a huge fricken deal.

I love small talk. Drives my wife crazy " why you always gotta be talking to people "🤣🤣 Some people can make you laugh with their comments, and some will just glare at you and make snide comments. And I find all of that very interesting.

You should say it more often. Challenge peoples norms. Small talk is for small minds, and it’s useless.
@Call-me-Al

@@kissit012 smalltalk is a social lubricant, which is why it is useful and something I have tried to not completely suck at. Of course, the details of when, what, and how much smalltalk will vary heavily between cultures. Like in my culture, speaking to your bus-seat neighbour is considered rude unless you have a dang good reason to, while in other cultures not engaging in smalltalk there is considered really rude. My partner is so good at smalltalk with strangers (compared to me at least), it's like watching a magician in action :(

Small talk does not exist in Finland. We do not have a word for it, it does not exist as a concept. If we have nothing to say, then we will say nothing. We have "comfortable silence".

So true story... This guy went to the Golden Gate Bridge to end it all. But he decided he was going to walk the bridge and if anyone spoke to him he wouldn't do it. He walked and smiled at the passers-by but got ignored. He got to the end of the bridge, turned around and went to the middle of the bridge, and jumped. He was one of the very few who survived jumping. You never know what a simple smile and hello might mean to someone.

Our dog talks to us! He uses FluentPet buttons, and has a vocabulary of about 24 words right now 😊 Today he met new people and went from using the "stranger play now" buttons to the "friend settle play" buttons after an hour of playtime with our guests before they left for home! 🐕🥳 Tonight before bed, he walked to his buttons to tell us, "stranger friend before, all done now!"
