Boromir was a fantastic character in the book...he seems to mirror our own frailties and strengths.

Nigh on 15 years later, we still come back to hear the best rendition of the Lament for Boromir. I've heard the high-production studio versions, I've heard the Hollywood adaptations, and I've heard the rest. None can quite touch the true intent of the song, but Colin comes the closest, I would believe. Hang in there Colin, thanks for giving us these unadulterated versions of Tolkiens songs.

Colin's is amazing. But I have to hand it to Robert Inglis on how he sings it in the audio book. In my option that's the most accurate rendition.

‘You left the East Wind to me,’ said Gimli, ‘but I will say naught of it.’ ‘That is as it should be,’ said Aragorn. ‘In Minas Tirith they endure the East Wind, but they do not ask it for tidings.'

This is by far the best version of this song I've heard on KZbin. The problem with so many performers doing Tolkien songs is that they focus on the technical aspects of singing, making those songs feel operatic and detached. Colin's singing takes away all the needless embellishments and focuses on emotion. I could picture Aragorn and Legolas singing it like that while Boromir's body travelled down the river; I couldn't picture any of them singing that in the perfect operatic style of other renditions.

You nailed it : that's the way song could have been sing around a firecamp, in the evening gathering by the common people. Singing an old tale... I wouldn't feel bad to sing along (even if I sing far far worse than Colin), while that would feel grotesque with the "operatic" versions

You have really captured an inspiring ballad, even if Tolkien wrote the lyrics. I agree with your assessment. Boromir represents all the flaws and weaknesses that make us Human, and still his redemption at Amon Hen inspires so many to understand that every moment of humanity is an opportunity to grasp redemption. He shows that it is never too late to correct your mistakes.

And King Elessar gathered his most talented bards, and he taught them this song of three friends, composed in their grief at the loss of this fallen hero of Minas Tirith. And they made from it a great anthem, singing it at festivals and gatherings great and small, until it were graven upon the hearts of the people. And for many generations of men, they would thus sing this lay of one of Gondor's greatest sons! Or, so I imagine Tolkien might have put it, had he heard this brilliant man sing it like this!

@felipemaiden13 True, I myself like the movie's, love the books. But I didn't say, he did it al for the money, but one of his main goals was the "commercialising" of LotR. (which is to be expected because of the studio's, who put in a lot of money and want to see it worth their while.) In one of his other video's, I saw that C. Rudd isn't thrilled about P. Jackson, so I don't think the two of them will ever work together or want to work together.

Actually, this is a tune that Tolkien wrote himself. You can find it in the written works of the Lord of the Rings. Aragorn and Legolas alternated singing it, Aragorn doing the west and north winds, while Legolas did the South wind.

Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes. ‘What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight? Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight? ‘I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey, I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away Into the shadows of the North, I saw him then no more. The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor, ‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar, But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’ From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones, The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gate it moans. ‘What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve? Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve. ‘Ask not of me where he doth dwell - so many bones there lie, On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky, So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea. Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!’ ‘O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south, But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth’. From the Gate of the Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls, And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls. ‘What news from the North, O mighty wind, do you bring to me today? What news of Boromir the bold? For he is long away.’ ‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought, His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought. His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest, And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast. ‘O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze, To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.
