Makes of Pastel Pencils and Paper I Use 2018

A few years ago, I bought a small set of Derwent pastels to try out the medium for the first time. I had a really hard time and thought that pastels were just not for me, so pretty much gave up with them. Then I came across your website and tutorial pack. I bought some Faber Castell Pastels and made something I was actually proud of. Thank you for this material guide. The pencil/paper you start off with can have a great impact on whether a beginner decides to keep at it or give it up.

Koh-i-noor best pastel pencils, and stabilo carbathelo. That's what I have been using for yrs. I've tried pitt, creatacolor, etc. There OK I just like those two personally. There more vibrant. I did side by side tests on all of them. Love your videos. Thank you for showing us all these great videos, and art work.

Ive never used the fabriano is it as good as pastelmat or the 400 series pastel paper?

james ? The Fabriano Ingres pastel paper is easier to work with than Pastelmat but the finishing result is less vibrant.

Just starting out with pastels and I have a full set of FC Pitt Pastels. I have some Fabriano Ingres paper. I am trying to copy an image done on Pastemat with Carbothello pastel pencils and I can’t get the vividness that the original has, especially with the white for highlights. Is it the paper, the pencils or a combination of both?

The Faber-Castellated pastel pencils are my favorites, however Carb-Othello are indeed brighter. Pastelmat paper allows more pastel to be applied therefore the colours are that much brighter. You would be better to choose an image done with both Ingres pastel paper and the FC pastel pencils, I hope this helps.

Hi Anya, there's anthracite which is pretty close to black, I really like the Dark Grey myself.

You have the Derwent the old series, with the pink stripe at the bottom of the pencil, such is not released, according to many people they are better than the ones produced now (with silver stripes). And there is also an older version of Derwent pencils - Rexel Derwent, they, like those that with the pink stripe more interesting range of colours, there are shades of colors, dark and light. They can sometimes be found on eBay, used, but sometimes completely new sets, many dream of them. I have a little new Derwent (with a silver strip), it's not my favorite pencils, they have too crumbly texture and come across hard inclusions scratching paper. My favorite it Carbothello, also in the favorites of Faber Castell. And also, Colin, I have a question, maybe you know the answer to that, why do pastel pencils have such a small range of colors? The largest number of colors in pastel pencils - Caran D'Ache 84 colors, Faber Castell 60, it's so little, I want more colors and more shades. I think it is possible to do it in terms of production.

Animals Pastel Art I agree that the colour range is not as good as it could be, this is the reason I use several makes of pastel pencil now in my work.

I have a question I never see anyone using Conte pastel pencils. Have had some over 40 yrs and over the yrs picked up new boxes. It always worked for me. Is it considered cheap and not good? I just dont see anyone on KZbin using them! Please reply.

Hi Marti, from our experience they are an okay product for sure. We would recommend using them if you have them. It's an additional range of colours, we just find that the actually the 4 brands we use are the better ones in our opinion - faber-castell, caran d'ache, cretacolor and carbothello

Hello there, these are quite hard pastel pencils compared to soft pastel. As mentioned in the video, our favourites are Faber-Castell, STABILO, Cretacolor and now also Caran d'Ache pencils. Regarding papers we like Fabriano Ingres and Pastelmat Paper. I hope that helps

Amazing video! It helped a lot. Sorry for being late, just found your channel. Just a question, if I was doing a portrait, am I still able to use the Carbothello Stabilo pencils? Or would the drawing not turn out as good when using them instead of the other pencils mentioned in the video?

Carb-Othello pastel pencils would produce similar results and are a good product, thank you for your interest.

Most expensive are Faber castell pitt pastel pencils. I find carbathello pencils cheaper than the other but not as vibrant as the former. Meteintes touch sandpaper is superb for me...Very satisfying. But recently, decided to stop pastels and continue with oils daily. Nothing can be vibrant than oil painting I feel....sad I'm leaving pastels...

Don't panic. Derwent doesn't perform well on the ingres paper Mr. Bradley uses in his tutorials, but it's good on Clairefontaine Pastelmat paper. Watch Jason Morgan's review of Derwent pastel pencils.
