Try using Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils set of 24 with the lighter colour papers of the Canson Mi Teintes Earth Tones pad.

Thank you for doing a demo on the reverse side of the canson mi-teintes. All the demos I watch about this brand are done on the honey comb side and then the ones demonstrating it say its too ruff to get any realism. It's a good priced paper compared to the clairfontaines. I went ahead and ordered a pad of this canson in a gamble to try out the back side knowing it was the smoother side but without any one doing the demo. So much appreciated that you chose the smoother textured side. Thanks for your time in doing this video. Jill C. Huachuca Arizona😊

Just found you on the net ! And I learn a lot already . I also use Faber Castell and Pastel mat . But I also use Stabilo pastel pencils , because they have a large range of , for example blue’s ( English is not my first language, sorry ) .

Very useful! I'm a beginner and is hard to find most materials here, so, if I want to try the real thing to know if I'm doing good, I must obtaint it from internet. I'm really happy to found your great list ;D

I agree with all his recommendations. I like the Faber Castells and own quite a few but I also like Stabilo and Conte pastel pencils. Colorfix is a great ground but it will take a toll on the pencils. Eats them right up.

Excellent video and full of great tips when it comes to pastels. I have to say I prefer pastelmat to canson mi tientes because it allows you to work from both light to dark and dark to light but that's just because of the way that I prefer to work. I've been eyeing up a large set of the FC pastel pencils for ages now. You are seriously tempting me! As for pencil sharpeners, I've had no breakage issues using the stabilo carbothello sharpener. It's excellent for pastel pencils because it doesn't allow the wood casing to shift around as you twist, and it's very sharp. Dull blades and a sharpener hole that doesn't fit the pencil exactly are the main culprits when it comes to breakages.

Wild Portrait Artist I love Pastelmat for more refined subjects and yes definitely easier to work those lights over dark layers at the end. Thanks for watching

Thank you for the great video! I just used pastelmat for the first time and absolutely love it. I used it with panpastels and coloured pencils but found that I needed to add more detail to the area where I used the pans. I have ordered the box of 60 colours of Pitt Pencils. I can't wait to try them:)

+Terence Molloy there is Terence and pastels seems to have as much variety as any medium. This is my personal selection of favourites. I've used and compared most brands and these are what I feel are the best. Excellent vid! Thank you for sharing this useful information. You didn't mention blenders (paper blenders or colour shapers - you mentioned Colin Bradley, you know what I mean). Why? Don't you use them?
@PhilDaviesArtist8 жыл бұрын
Paolo Lotti I prefer letting the pencils do the blending. I do use my finger occasionally but I find blending tools lift too much pastel so there's lots of backend forth. It's a personal preference thing I suppose but I do lie some of the paper texture and pastel marks to show through most of the time

I am new to using pastel pencils, and I recently bought the Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils, box of sixty. The question I have is how are the pencils organized in the two trays? Are they organized by hue, saturation or what? This is not obvious to me as I have never worked with color before, only with graphite pencils.

I have that pencil sharpener. It works OK when the pencil is "good" but as soon as you try putting a pencil with multiple breaks in its lead through it. You will find it is awkward to take to bits and unblock.

Thank you for the information. I tried some pastel pencils on craft paper, and found that I cant do much blending with various colours. Also there is the pastel dust that remains. Do we blow it off, then it sticks to other parts of the paper! I would appreciate your views on what to do in such a case! thanks a lot.
@PhilDaviesArtist7 жыл бұрын
I don't know what type of craft paper you're using but you need something with a bit of tooth if you want to blend several layers of coloured pencils. Yes, you will get some pastel dust building up and I blow it away every so often... I've never had an issue with it sticking to other parts of the paper though

Faber-Castell Polychromos pastel sticks are of about the same hardness as the pastel pencils. Can I then apply what you have said to those sticks?

So would you also recommend canson or pastelmat for traditional soft pastels? I'm looking to use both halfsticks and pencils, but it's been a solid decade since I messed with traditional media much.

I think it's pronounced me-tan-tuh not me-taunt. Anyway, Stillman and Birn just came out with some toned paper books called Nova series, heavier than Strathmore's toned paper. I wonder if that would be good too?
