Shawn Layden is right. Relatively small teams in a few years could make genre defining games. COD4 (just one of the most revolutionary games ever made) was made by 100 people in 2 years. We would get amazing Mass Effect games every couple years. These games aren't even small in scope or "indies". Now all of a sudden 5 years is the bare minimum, like, what the heck happened. If more powerful hardware requires budgets in the hundreds of millions of dollars, is it even worth it? Hopefully AI or powerful new game design tools can help speed up the process, since this is bad for everyone.

Resident Evil 5 is a great example of what's being discussed late into the episode. I know it's not the most popular Resident Evil game as it went full action, however, it's an incredibly fun action adventure, especially co-op. It's 10-15 hours on a normal playthrough, and I've beaten it 6-8 times at least over the years. I have to push back on Colin's point on the market having rejected VR. If that was the case games developers would no longer be working on or releasing VR titles and manufacturers would stop selling VR headsets. Meta have sold around 20 million quest units. There is also an estimated 171 million VR users worldwide with 77 million in the U.S alone. I myself have a PSVR2 headset and I'm also looking at getting a meta quest at some point. @@Donald_Allan I think the broader point in "the market rejecting VR" is that none of them have had MAJOR success in their own space. Metaquest selling 20 million units is fantastic, but I bet with some confidence that it isn't enough to justify the R&D that went into it, and it's not piercing the market in the way they hoped it would. VR is still quite inaccessible to most gamers. Economy has made gaming almost an extreme luxury, let alone VR.
@Donald_Allan8 күн бұрын
@@beefstrokinoff I would disagree that none of them have had major success. Meta being able to sell 20 million quest units is a huge success. I completely disagree with you guys about 100 hour games and games being to long. It’s not that people don’t have the time, it’s that people have no attention span. I have friends that say they don’t have the time to play Elden Ring, but then they sit on their phone for 4 hours a day, then they binge watch a Netflix show and then when you see them online playing a game they’re playing Warzone and Apex legends for hours on end. Everyone is always trying to act like they don’t have the time, but you always find the time to do the things you like. The real problem is people’s attention span is at an all-time low, people cannot stay and play in the same game world for more than a few hours anymore and it’s embarrassing.

Games should be as long as they need to be. And people need to stop insisting they know the value proposition for everyone else. What is too short to me could be just right to someone else. What’s too long to Colin could be just right to me. These days I won’t buy a game unless I know I’m going to get a lot of playtime out of it. Like a FromSoftware game or Naughty Dog where I know I’ll replay it a lot. But if someone feels it’s only worth it to spend $60-$70 on a 100 hour game, let them feel this way. I can’t stand the notion that people speak for everyone saying “games are too long.” Also the comparison to movies is absurd and always has been. A movie ticket for a two hour movie is exponentially less money than a $60-$70 game. And again, there are games that offer way more time value for the cost so it’s not 1:1. Terrible comparison.

Man Chris did a poor job or explaining the specific story about the famous, sharing a game video with ps4. The story is, MS said your xbox needs to be always online/do online checks to make sure your games are actually yours, as in purchased by you, so if you tried to let your friend borrow it, his xbox would do an online check and see that its not his game and would not let him play it. Basically, our whole lives in gaming we always bought a disc and could do whatever we wanted with it, let a friend borrow it, resell it etc but MS's console would not let you. MS said you would have to establish "family members" under your xbox account and therefore those are the only other people who could play your games. So Sony did an impromptu video behind the scenes as a joke that showing that with a ps4, if you wanted to share your games, all you had to do, instead of dealing with DRM/setting up "family share" accounts etc, was hand your friend the disc, done! plain and simple, just like always. They released the video as minor thing and it blew up bc this made sony look like the good guys even like heroes and MS look like absolute evil anti consumer dumb asses. You are welcome.

Larian and FromSoft are similar in regards to game creation. Neither wants to follow the easy money, same reason Larian discontinued a DLC for BG3 even though they started it. Miyazaki after Elden Ring talked about not wanting to do something that size again, its been clear from the beginning. I never expected a sequel to ER and never will aside from a side dish.

Something’s wrong when people who play hundreds of games complain about a game being too long because they play too many games and arent playing a game they want to play fully

Great show boys - Many of the points made about the hours a game is and how much content in them was sound and logical, thoguh I will say, and plenty have said this, using achievements/ trophies on any platform is not always super helpful or clear as to what it means. Chris brings up the game 'mouthwash' for example. The way the game blew up, does factor in what kind of people are going out of their way to play the game and more likely to finish the game. Something like Elden Ring blew up but in a different way and soared to selling 20+ million copies and has like 30% (I have no clue what the actual percent is) completion rate. I think if we look at how many people bought the elden ring expansion compared to the base game, that would give us a little bit of an idea of legeit numbers, but even that isn't a complete picture. In reality, the only way to really see these things are when a studio or publisher puts out official numbers and of course even with that, we don't know what it always means or how honest they are. There are quite literally dozens of factors that play a role into the completion percents of these games, and then obviously for those games that are big on utilizing mods, they typically break being able to even earn achievements/ trophies.

Was funny is that genshin impact was seen as a ripoff of Zelda breath of the wild, and yet became one of the biggest games of the last 5 years.

Interesting thought about how relevant PlayStation and console gaming is in general, the Xbox has now started to promote themselves as a service that can be played and experienced anyway you prefer not just on console, the Xbox name has taken a lot of heat recently for that and in all fairness the PlayStation brand is only one small step behind Xbox. PlayStation have been making some serious changes to how they allow you play the games on PC, granted some of their feature games have a delayed window between when you can play the games on something other than then the PlayStation console however you still can eventually and not only that but far better with options to run the games in ultra wide screen, with ridiculously fidelity, stupidly high frame rates and so on. The final wall that will break the camels back for PlayStation and essentially the last resistance for the console is Gran Turismo! If and most probably when that comes to the PC it will officially become the beginning of the end. The amount of status that game holds for PlayStation is the biggest reason to hold on to your console, if the scenario changes and the port happens I may as well burn my PlayStation because I’m sure it won’t be worth even a dollar anymore and has more value in being used as fuel to keep me warm in the cold winter nights.
