I totally understand. My parents owned a country store in Hollis Maine from 1995-2005. When a giant grocery store was built 3 miles away they never lost a customer. My parents had such a personal relationship with all their customers that they remained loyal. It helped that their meat department was amazing along with the deli. My mom sold 140 lbs of homemade potato salad every week. I always support local business here in Huntington Beach and in Maine.

It's so hard for small businesses to stay competitive with prices. It's the only reason I ever shop at some of the bigger stores and markets. I still stop in to local places almost daily, even just to buy a drink or something, and will pay higher prices for smaller items, just because I like the people, talking with locals, and it makes me feel like part of the community. That said, I worry about a lot of them when often their prices are 150% compared to bigger stores. I can afford that for little things, but, my paycheck simply won't allow me to spend 50% more on everything. My wages haven't exactly kept up with inflation, even for the big corporate store prices, and rent and everything else has skyrocketed. I feel poorer now than 10 years ago.

Firelighters go through a lot of crap that people never hear about. My dad is a retired firefighter, and he has stories that are bone-chilling. We have this bar in downtown Tucson called the Shanty. It's a hipster place now, but in the 70s, it was a rough biker bar. My dad was new to the force at the time and was on the medic truck. They responded to a call of a man severely beaten. He arrived on scene and started working on the guy doing cpr. The bikers came out and told him to stop or they would kill him. He basically gave them the middle finger and kept working on the patient. One of the bikers had a pool cue that he was going to start beating my dad with. Luckily, the cops pulled up and saved my dad's life. Our 1st responders dont get enough respect for what they do on the daily.

In January, 2008, Joe’s guest, Roger Avary, killed the 34-year-old passenger in his car, Andreas Zini, who was visiting from Italy on his honeymoon. Roger was Drunk, and driving over 100 MPH, when he lost control of his Mercedes, plowing into a Telephone Pole. Andreas died at the Hospital. Roger’s wife was thrown from the vehicle, but survived. Andreas’s Wife was not in the car. Roger was sentenced to a year, and was allowed to work during the day, and stay at a Work Furlough at night. He went on Twitter AND COMPLAINED about The Work Furlough Center, so the Judge REVOKED his Work Furlough, and he was remanded to The Ventura County Jail to serve out the remainder of his sentence completely incarcerated.

hmm not quite imho. Still his biggest talent is being a film archiver. His films are like wax museums with a pulse, right? The deepest layer of QT is fanboy, and homage is his strongest dialect. So no, not the greatest filmmaker despite the technical brilliance and nail biting script curveballs. It takes way more than that to be a master.

As someone who writes and also has spent time in jail, prison, solitary confinement, and all that stuff… I can 100% vouch for Roger that every single word he said about a writers prison experience is EXACTLY what happens. People don’t realize how many incarcerated people (and people who are not incarcerated) are on the edge of being illiterate. They have no money, they can’t call home, maybe their family lives across the country or a foreign country, and they literally do not have the ability to communicate or express themselves to anyone outside of the prison. They ask you to “edit” or “check the grammar” and the letter they wrote because they don’t want to sound “ignorant”. Not wanting to be rude, inconsiderate, and not wanting to hurt their feelings, I would just start it from scratch and get them to tell me the ideas they want to get across. Everything else Roger said is entirely true, no exaggeration, not hyperbole, and it’s not dramatized for entertainment. His experience parallels most people’s prison experience… except most aren’t famous writers.

COOL STORY: I met Tom Savini at a convention way back in the day. For the convention, my friend shaved his head, and I being a semi-skilled artist, drew tribal designs all over his head, matching his hairline (using eye liner). It turned out REALLY well, to the point that many people asked my friend if he had tattooed his head for real. So, we're wandering around, and we come up to Tom Savini's table. And one of the first things Tom does is ask to get a closer look at my friends head, and then asked if the designs are real tats. My friend says no, and then explains that I'm the artist. Tom turns to me and seriously praises my work, asked me what I used, telling how great of a job I did, and that he was very impressed 😁 😊 For a master on that level to praise your work is a great feeling. Tom Savini is a real one, and is the GOAT of creature and make-up effects.

I've been.... doing not great to say the least, the whole thing about staying in a work well you do well enough to stay but not well enough to be happy or live really resonated with me... like "Maybe I should try and take more risks and follow my dreams" kind of vibe, "Maybe it's not too late". I had numbed myself thinking there was no future where I was while also not wanting to take a risk.... I'LL RECONSIDER IT.

What I love about this pod is the contrast between Tarantino and Avary’s style, I’ve always been enthralled by Tarantino a ability to make something sound incredibly entertaining and poignant, almost like his movies, but Avary gives this other angle, talking about the seemingly banal details that actually are really fascinating - that story about making a new scene out of necessity as they ran out of time / money, using a ‘Kubrick-esque lens’ for a wide shot - this is the kind of detail that some would leave out to make the story sexy, but it’s a real insight into the more technical aspects. Great great show

Quinten Tarantinos last film should be what he talked about. His story of a young film fan working at a video store and becoming a locally respected film critic. And he can pay homage to his entire discography by having the store banter with customers involve them talking about films he’s made but make it clever. where he takes it from there could be limitless. A movie about movies… Instead of trying to live up to a big expectation as his finale, I think being able to make the last movie about his own personal love by making the main character a fan/film critic would alleviate the pressure. It may sound boring on the surface to some of his fans. But if you think about the nature of his dialogue being elite and sense of humor, he could tell a really good relatable story in that video store.

I almost lost my house to fire in San Diego in the mid 90s. The Santa Ana winds blew the flames hundreds of feet in the air. I drove through the devastation after the fire and it was surreal. Every 2nd or 3rd house on the streets burned down to the ground from the roofs down. No damage to the lawn or trees next to the homes. The homes with tile roofs were untouched. The homes with wood shingle roofs burned right to the ground. It was crazy to see. Most homes were spared by tile roofs.
