DOWN A WELSH COALMINE

follow in the footsteps of the miners who once worked at the Lewis Merthyr Colliery, heart of the Rhondda Valley, South Wales.

I’m a coalminers daughter, my dad was a miner who worked in many pits including Polmaise ( first pit out in the 80s strike, last pit back, should have listened to them) here in Scotland. He died at 63 from pit related illness. I had two great grandfathers that died in pit collapses. 45 years this year and I stand proud having had the pleasure of having a hero of a father. Cut me down the middle and I will be inscribed with ‘Coalminers daughter and proud!✊🏼❤️

This is so cool. My wifes Grandfather Billie Collett and his father Gilbert Collett were both killed in the mines, is separate accidents, in Harlan county Kentucky. Her other grandfather died of black lung. They need to do this type of thing here in Kentucky. Thank you for the upload. Have a nice day.

Thank you for your comment, my dad was a miner from the age of12yrs in a mine not far from Lewis Merthyr colliery., He died through coal dust on the lungs at 65.

I was born oposite Lewis Merthyr , my father was a miner there. The 2nd WW started then went on to work in Ty Mawr colliery. Very hard times for him and miners like him. God bless them all.

My comments were not made to offend, so sorry if I did. I left School in 79 and went down Newdigate after my 12 week training. Supplying the men on the coalface, We dragged split bars down a 24 " roadway on our bellies. I personally witnessed some of my friends tying in them around their legs so they could dram them behind them. At 18 onto the Coal Face. When it shut I went to Birch Coppice onto 48" seams. Then onto Coventry 16 feet high. I will never forget the smell, atmosphere, taking salt tablets or freezing at some times. Again sorry I never meant to offend you.

Hi Ruth interesting question, remember my father, (a Welsh coal miner) always took cheese sandwiches down the mine, he used to tell me that cheese was the only thing you could taste down there. www.touringwalesuk.com/ .

@@taffystravelvideos Hi Taffy, No disrespect was meant by my comment. I left School in 79 and went straight to Newdigate dragging a split bar behind me in a 24 inch roadway. Onto the Face and the Birch Coppice on a 54 inch face before my finale days at Coventry on 16 feet faces. The sounds, smells etc will forever be remembered. Again respect to you Sir, a great video
