I used to feel the same way about mining books for craft materials. But lately I've come around to thinking that as long as the book in question was mass produced, and there are plenty of copies available out there, there's no harm in taking scissors to them. I have a couple of art books that I use in this way. They cost $5 and $6 secondhand; there are who knows how many copies in used bookstores, and the artworks they reproduce are famous and in no danger of disappearing. I don't feel guilty about cutting them up.
