This channel is focused on Bones, Hormones, and Healthspan to help midlife women and beyond aim for optimal, not average, and reignite their spark!
The videos on this channel will be focused around helping women navigate healthspan and longevity through the lens of osteoporosis, perimenopause, and menopause. When it comes to osteoporosis and menopause providers and educators often get tunnel vision and your symptoms might get better, but if you don't keep longevity in mind, symptom improvement may come at the expense of heart and brain health.
Subscribe and follow along as Dr. Doug Lucas explores the research and clinical applications surrounding women's health.

Thank you for the explanation. I plan to take collagen. Even if the increases are negligible, they add up over time. It's better to move in the direction of improvement rather than deterioration.

Excellent analysis. Helped me understand the role of collagen and how the body uses it. I started taking the bovine type thinking it would help improve bone density but now see that I can tweak my animal protein intake for the same benefits. I did find that my hair and nails improved noticeably so I will continue to take it just as another protein source rather than thinking that collagen specifically is making any difference. I now see why you advocate such a strong protein intake (which I struggle to achieve, but I’m getting there). Thank you for this straightforward presentation.

Thanks for the collagen info. Glad I never bothered with it. I do take biotin for hair skin & nails. Any thoughts on Natto for the K2. I buy it at an Asian grocery shop and eat a tablespoon with sardines daily. I can’t tolerate K2 supplements. I take Calcium Citrate & D3, Magnesium, Ester C, & a bariatric Multivitamin. I’m also on a low dose of Estrogen cream for menopause. I also exercise more at 57 than I did at 47. Planks, push-ups, yoga, dancing with stomping, walking… No jumping, due to a big toe joint issue. I’m on a carnivore diet for years. It’s helped me immensely.

I have bamboo supplement and regularly do bonds in my stairs. My last bone density test showed an incredible improvement from 3.2 to 2.7 in my hip. Fortibone is a "scam" not in the way that it does not work, in the way that Gelita pretends that they identified some specific bone targeting bioactiv peptides. Not the case otherwise they would have patented the enzymatic process to produce these peptides and identified clearley the amino sequence. Gelita is bulls...ing everybody with their peptides. Peptan is far less expensive and was on the market for much longer. Having said that collagen is an excellent supp.

Hi Meg, Yes, DEXA is challenging. We will do a more details DEXA video soon. It's time. Seeing disparate numbers like that isn't uncommon. The spine is more trabecular bone and hip is more cortical. They respond differently to different stresses. What it means depends on the numbers and circumstances.

Paired with coaching and topics presented by my PA it's a great path as well. 3. Consider our Free Masterclass. Even in Switzerland I can only find a few products containing the Fortibone from Gelita , very hard to get. It is also costly approximately, 85-100 Swiss Francs per month. I have used the following products : CH Alpha Osteo, Osteoligan from Bellapur, OsteoLoges. Gelita also makes a beauty collagen powder called Verisol which claims to be different to other collagen powder because ti is active- not sure if this make a huge difference. Now that you have reviewed the lack lustre study it may make more sense to concentrate on strength training vs these supplement powders all things being considered. I have never had a bone scan as I am younger than the recommendations but both my mother and grandmother had osteoperosis/osteopenia so I was trying to get a head start on the saving my bones as much as possible. Do you have to build muscles in order to build better bones? Although I lift weights with a personal trainer I have not noticed bigger muscles, just more definition i but I wonder if that is because I would need to eat in a pretty big calorie surplus to increase muscle size and therefore have an impact on my bones?

Hi Helen, I look forward to working with you! Thank you for subscribing. We have a video on Fortibone and collagen in general. There is no good evidence to support Fortibone’s claims but it makes sense from a HealthSpan Perspective. We reduce natural collagen production as we age so supplementation is logical. Hi Julia, Prolia is a form of resorptive drug which I don't like. It decimates bone metabolism and makes it difficult to build bone. The risks are significant. There is a time and place for these drugs but I think they are over used and are recommended instead of natural approaches too often.

Dr Doug- great video I’m curious if you looked into the difference between collagen products like Fortibone, and the general stuff you get at Costco or health food stores. Most sources I’ve read state that the bioavailability of collagen is much greater with the lower the molecular weight is. The Fortibone brand has a MW of 5000 daltons, whereas most of the stuff you buy commercially is up as high as 45,000 daltons. I’m currently taking a product that has a MW of 3000 daltons. Also - I’m a little skeptical about the idea that consuming collagen is no different than consuming a quality protein or amino acid supplement, because it all gets broken down into amino acids anyway so there’s no difference. If that were absolutely true, then why do so many people notice a definite improvement in skin/hair/nails when adding collagen to their diet, assuming of course they have adequate protein intake to begin with? If adding collagen improves those other things more than just consuming other forms of protein, I don’t think it would be crazy to assume it could also help your bones as well

I have big G.I issues and do not tolerate vitamin c even the calcium ascorbate except in very small doses. I also do not tolerate collagen supplements or bone broth. Also, I have had to decrease the fruit and vegetables I eat.Thus, I am worried that I am not getting enough C. My osteoporosis is getting worse so have started Prolio. I have often wondered if I can get Vitamin c into my body by soaking my feet in a Vitamin C bath as I often do with epsom salts and have started doing these Vitamin C soaks. I cannot find any research on this question but I would think this would be a fairly easy study to undertake? Any thoughts?

Not my favorite. It has a lot of calcium from an unidentified source which is concerning for contamination. Not enough vitamin D to be used alone. Not enough mag to be used alone. It combines Strontium with Calcium which compete for absorption. etc etc.

Is it true creatine and turmeric are good for rebuilding bones? If so, how much?
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas 10 ай бұрын
I haven't seen studies on these specifically for bone health BUT creatine is great for muscles and therefore indirectly will impact bones. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory which is good for bones. How much? Standard dosing for creatine is 5g/day. Some people take less and people with kidney disease should ask their doctor first. Turmeric dosing is all over the map. It depends on the form, quality etc.

@Dr_DougLucas

Not sure what your asking. There is much debate on where to get collagen supplementation. I don't know that there is a great answer either. Collagen in bones is type 1 but there is no evidence to support consuming a particular type of collagen to support a specific structure.

Should we be paying attention to t scores or z scores
@paulelkins425
@paulelkins425 10 ай бұрын
IMO, T scores are more important. They compare your bone density with a healthy young individual. Z scores compare you to the average for your age and sex. As the general population's health declines the average bone density may not be a healthy target.
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas 10 ай бұрын
Hi Denise, T-Scores are what are used to define osteoporosis, fracture risk and monitor improvements with drug therapy. They aren't everything though. We monitor T-scores but are more interested in other biomarkers and imaging when available.

Waste of money is relative to resources. There is probably benefit for skin, hair and nails but the literature does not show that it supports bone health. We do slow in collagen production as we age. So, replacing fits with anti-aging protocols BUT does it make the top ten list? Maybe…
