D3/K2 is recommended. K2 helps put the calcium into the bones. This was discovered a few years ago so studies were done. Without the K2 calcium was going into the soft tissues. Now D3/K2 is being told to use by many Drs. Higher doses fro a couple of weeks then taper down as needed.

I am SO sorry to say this. Third. So I STILL have my doggone basic bottom line questions. A. You say do not take calcium. Then, you say TO take calcium. 😵💫😵💫😵💫 B. You NEVER have mentioned specific Labs for a recently diagnosed Osteoporosis patient…..to request. 😵💫😵💫😵💫 I will be 80 soon. I have OTHER HORRIBLE diseases, so am constantly trying to stay apprised of THOSE, as well. Thank you for the explanation about vitamins, particularly vitamin E which I hadn't considered before as a bone health supplement. I don't mind taking a couple more pills of vitamin A and E if necessary. I have reduced my intake of calcium supplements to 500mg daily, based on monitoring my diet and realizing I was getting at least half what I needed through my food. I went to the product site. It has this disclaimer: "Caution: Individuals taking more than 50 mcg (2,000 IU) of Vitamin D per day should have their vitamin D levels monitored. This product is not intended for long term use and should be used under the supervision of your doctor." The product has 125 mcg of vitamin D, which is 5,000 IU. That seems like a lot. And if it's not intended for long-term use, I can't see it as being helpful for a long-term regimen, which is what we need if we're striving to improve and maintain bone health.

What level do you like Vitamin D at? I've maintained mine at 75 or so for 10 years, but still developed osteoporosis. This dose seems high for ongoing. I've had to back off of 5000 IU from time to time. Isn't there data so support a multivitamin in health? I was thinking of good multivitamin, K2, Calcium/mag, D separate combo do to manage separately amounts? Wondering about a natural source like cod liver oil for A? Still confused on K2 since fro what I've read the only substantial data supporting lower fracture rates is with MK4 Japan/high dose studies. We don't have enough data with MK7? If that's true why not go with the long time tested MK4 Japan 45 mg dose?
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
Hi, I don't like that dose because it's a monster dose! Also, I try to use supplementation to mimic natural consumption not supraphysiologic. There is data to support the impact MK7 has on osteocalcin and subsequently on bone. I wouldn't expect to see a large trial on MK-7 due to the lack of funding. The rest of recommended supplements we use biomarkers to determine. If you haven't come to our masterclass it may help to clear things up for you!

What do you consider a "high dose" of alpha tocopheryl? My opthalmologist advised me to take a supplement called Preservision AREDS2. Each softgel contains 90 mg (600% of DV) of dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate, and the dosage is 2 soft gels per day. My multivitamin contains 22.5 mg (150%) of dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate.

Your calcium score is indicative of long standing disease in your coronary arteries. The implications of this on bone health improvement are multifaceted and depend on the treatment decision being made. Sorry I can’t be more clear. These are challenging topics!

Hi Dr. Lucas, I am new to your channel. Thanks for the information on Osteoporosis. I am currently taking the Vitamin Code Raw Calcium ( Garden of Life) whole food plant formula with Calcium, magnesium, vit.d3& k2 mk-7. I was hearing that the other calciums were manly made out of rocks. This Calcium is naturally occuring from Algae. 1.100 mg. I also get it from my foods. So I try and balance the amount between the Raw Calcium and what I am getting through my foods. What is your take on this form? Thank you.

I don’t like plant forms of calcium because of contaminants that are not routinely screened for from algae sources. Some calcium forms like oxides are essentially rocks but others are made from bones and are my preference. MCHC, OHC are two forms that we use. I have a few videos on them.

Hello there and thank you so much for creating this knowledge hub regarding osteoporosis. A question: is there a problem taking mk7 and vitamin D3 together in terms of the optimality of their absorption? do they need to be taken with oil?
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Great questions. I’ve heard the theory that K2 and D3 shouldn’t be taken together but I look at natural foods and the nutrients that are often paired together. K2 and D3 are not seen in significant amounts in food but where they do show up they show up together. So, I don’t mind taking them together. They do need to be taken with a fat source but not necessarily oil.
@lebooshdiaries Жыл бұрын
Thumbs up on this video, I really enjoyed the explanation of esp K2. I eat natto and the way to make it more palatable is to mix it with Japanese rice or any rice that is short and round. Mix natto into rice well and then cut up salted seaweed and sprinkle on top of the rice natto mix. It's delicious. I would like to ask - why is vitamin K2 MK7 pill more expensive on its own vs when it's combined in a D3+K2 MK7 combo pill? I noticed this in most brands and it's always the standalone K2 that is more expensive. I take D3+K2 (125mg) and the price is reasonable but when I see another K2 (125mg) pill without the D3, the price is double or triple of the combo that I eat. Hope you could give some insight on this. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for this information! I have repeated much of this myself to my patients for a few years now, learned from following Westin a price foundation. Question: When you spoke about avoiding “vitamin K” if on Coumadin, you did not specify whether it should also be k2 that is avoided. Obviously, k1 should be, and I know that it is said that k2 should also be avoided but I’m wondering if this is truly necessary or overly cautious, since k2 does not really function as a clotting factor like k1 does. Just wondering why you did not specify any difference.
