Hikaru, at timestamp 20:50 after a7, Ra8, white could go Ra6, preparing Na4 and Nb6. In this scenario pawn on a7 does not hang and black knight on g3 is not in time to get back to defend. Am I missing something?

@@goldenguti that position in the endgame was very solid for Magnus. He would have to do some terrible mistakes for losing it. While Ian had to be very accurate the whole endgame and eventually lost because of some inaccuracies. That is why it was much more harder for Ian. And also Magnus didn't hear any sources saying that it's a draw.

This can hardly be overstated. I'm a complete chess noob, I know nearly nothing about high level chess, but the explanations are JUST simple enough for me to get a grasp, from which I can then look up the terminology and try to understand what is happening. It's slow and explained enough that I can follow, but fast and abstract enough that it doesn't feel boring and overly technical. As much as the whole Match is a masterclass in chess - obviously - Hikarus analysis is also a masterclass in chess commentary - and shows that it can be both entertaining AND technical at the same time.

Hikaru just earned huge respect from me, although I never was a big fan of him, hearing how everyone is saying how obvious and unforgivable is c5 and bashing Nepo, its quite frustrating, Hikaru on the other hand handles it with understanding and explains what Nepo's logic was behind the move

@@sadeyezgaming4231 for a titled player it should be an absolute no brainer. I make these kinds of mistakes regularly, and I want to bang my head on the table after such moves and I'm 1200. GM's make blundets but rarely this blatant. A GM blunder is like losing some pawn in a position that leads to a losing endgame down the road and then losing the game. Or perhaps even failing to see an absolute brilliant stunning tactical sacrifice from the opponent in the middle game. Not a blunder like this. Just losing a piece with nothing to show for it.

yeah, nobody explained what was Nepo's intention with c5 move on different livestreams, except for Hikaru. Everyone just says ''it's a blunder'' while watching the engine on the side monitor. I saw many livestreams videos where even GMs and no title chess player also considered the c5 as an option, then they realized after someone else noticed the blunder or checked the engine. The point is even some GMs considered c5 at least for a moment in the confort of their desk at home or work. Now imagine Nepo in that chair alone, with the world watching him, and in front of probably the GOAT. So, it's easy to criticize someone like that. That's why I hate live transmissions with engine analyzing the game, even the white/black bar. There is no point, no mystery, in my opinion. Also, it makes everyone looks more ''skilled'' than the actual players.

It really is. At 22:10 Hikaru shows taking with the knight but Nepo could take with the rook, pinning Magnus's rook and forcing the exchange, giving both players 1 knight and pawns. That c4 pawn wins the game then. It's passed and too far away from the kings.

21:12 the b6 square could also be reached from d7 but unfortunately for White, this square is guarded by the bishop and there is no way to kick it from that diagonal. An alternative idea would be to try to protect the pawn with the knight and to go for Rb8 but unfortunately, the knight would have to go to b5 or c6, which are both controlled by the bishop (directly or through the pawn).

Opening u can rely on prep memorizing engine lines, mid to end game he had to rely on his own calculations ( which he is obviously great at) but in that situation u could see the mental cracks, he relied on his positional play which he is great at and did not calculate all the variations to play fast and pressure magnus on time but here his position slowly started to get worse and worse

Game six was won by wearing down Ian by refusing the draw. Ian kept looking up at Magnus when he was thinking his move and seeing that this is a draw would look up at him time and time again. . I watched all 8 hours of it, and wondering why Magus would not go for a draw. It was clear to me about move 60 or so that he meant to wear Ian down. It worked.

I was not trying to be precise on the lateness of the move that turned it but neither had any clear win until move 132 when black's queen wades over to the smothering side of the board where all white pieces could come forward closing options little by little for the queen. The real move that made it a clear winning game for Magnus was Blacks Queen moving to h7. The h6 move before it could be the one, but not clear how. The black queen should have stayed out of that smothering side anyway and be where it could have a better chance to find perpetual checks. In in case Magnus wore him down. where Qh7 was a truly blundering move.

@@josephrorie5728 It's still silly to use "refusing the draw". White had a clear objective, it is to promote a pawn. If the process took many moves it's still just another normal endgame win. Folks seem to make something special out of this game (other than it was a good game of chess), but I don't buy into it. There are many opening variations that regularly produce this kind of endgames with greatly unequal material. They are just so risky that they don't appear in WC matches these days. I would understand if it had been some KRN vs. KR, where the stronger side really can shuffle. But also there you just must defend those 50 moves. They kept score. In this 6th game white had a clear plan, managed to execute it and won.

20:54 can someone explain to me why prior to rerouting the knight as Hikaru says, Ian doesn't play rook a5, so when he moves his knight, it doesn't block the rock defending the pawn, I guess magnus has his knight to jump around with or something?

Awesome Analysis @GMHikaru... After Bxb7, Ra4 and c6 have trapped the bishop anyway with or without the c5 move. Ian should have retreated the bishop to a safer square after the rook Ra4 move. He was too focused on saving the c pawn (should have given back the c pawn for the b pawn and focused on the game instead). He had like 54 minutes to play out all the lines mentally... Unfortunately, he rushed and made quick moves... I feel sad for Ian but I guess his own undoing. He should take a leaf out of Magnus's book... In every game Magnus had just 10 to 15 minutes only left but, he thought through all lines and subsequently made faster moves to reach 40 moves... Ian on the other hand made super quick moves (usually good for late middle game/end games) in the early stages of the game where many pieces means many many different lines are possible and needs to be thought through...

It was mentioned in the video about h4, but I think the critical error in this game was Nepo's focus, while he still had a solid position he made several moves in about one minute without any deep calculation. To me it seemed like he had already given up to play in this manner. Also for the past few games Nepo engaged in post-game talk about the position which I think is a tell that he has lost the mental battle. I think if you are fighting for the win in a long series you don't compare notes with the opponent at any point.

@@Reb0rnLP magnus would easily win against a bad stockfish. 2800 elo is less than magnus's elo LOOOOOOOOOL if you mean 3800 elo which is about the rating of stockfish 14 then no, magnus would lose all 5/5 games. Don't care how good you are playing someone 1000 points higher rated than you is not savable. (think a 1400 playing someone who just learned how the pieces move)

Rapid and Blitz ratings are slightly lower and higher respectively. So yes, I am talking about a 2800 Stockfish (or any AI that can play at that level and not too far above or too far below). Obviously it doesn't have to be exactly 2800, but given that Ian is 2782 it should be alright.

Does anyone else notice that Hikaru's audio level sounds a bit low and lacking in low frequencies on the KZbin videos at times? If not, it may be my own issue; but at first, I wondered whether he was drifting too far from his microphone. I've noticed this on a few of his other videos as well. Or maybe he is using too much signal processing in order to block the music on the stream (Twitch) audio. The background music (if you can even call it that) just sounds muddled and annoying here. Maybe he should use a headset mic, or not apply so much processing of the audio, since it's really distorting the frequency response, and turning whatever the background music is into noise. Come on, Magnus saw it in a second as he said in the press conference. For example Giri said he saw it too within a second .. and he couldn’t believe what nepo just did. Ok sure some are just commentators who need an engine but men, giri Magnus nepo are the bests of the bests and that is just the truth. You have expectations from such players to not play the best moves every time, but a least not blunder a move other players with the same rating spots in 2 seconds ..

When Nepo won the Candidates I was hopeful he was, given the then winning record he had against Magnus, going to put at least some if not more pressure on Carlsen than Caruana had a couple of years ago. I think the first 5 games demonstrated he can apply such pressure although wasn't able to convert the small windows of opportunities Magnus allowed him. But after the heartbreaking loss on the marathonic game 6, I feel he got impatient and he's just trying to finish Carlsen off as soon as possible. On one hand I undestand the longer the game goes, the better for Magnus, but on the other side, you just can't self-inmolate kamikaze style hoping to sink your opponent AND survive at the same time. R.I.P. Nepo. Hopefully you will get another chance.

It's a fairly bad mistake at their level (Anish's "Jan has lost his danger sense" feels very appropriate). But even I saw the move in Yan's last loss so this one feels less jarring even though it's a full bishop. Also, Magnus doesn't get to complain about it, he lost a full bishop himself once (though he did win the game!).

what if Nepo played night b7 , on 22:39 ? Threat is for Nepo's night to go d6 -> c4 -> b6, so Magnus would have to play night f5, Nepo would still put night on d6 and exchange night, he would end up with pawn on d6, and white king is faster to get there then black king. And Nepo has chances or am i missing something?
