I have done a hundred of these jobs for car dealers. Depending on the mileage of the vehicle I like to replace all the lifters while I've got it apart. But some of the dealers want it done as cheap as possible and replace only the one bad lifter. I have had several occasions where I replaced one lifter and had to tear back into the motor a month or two down the road for a different collapsed lifter and the cheap dealer got hit with full labor again. It is more expensive to do them all, but if you plan on keeping the vehicle it might be worth the extra cost to replace all the lifters because it takes the same amount of labor got get to one lifter or all the lifters on the same side. Also, be sure to check and make sure the lifter won't rotate inside of the plastic or composite lifter keeps, if a lifter rotates in them it will destroy the cam lobe because the roller on the lifter will not line up properly on the cam lobe and will hammer the cam lobe to pieces.

@EC-mc7vg4 жыл бұрын
@@hubertmanley1225 That is pretty low mileage for bad lifters from what I have experienced. Usually they last many more miles. Do you have good oil pressure? Are you experiencing a constant miss on one cylinder? I have had a few occasions where using Marvel Mystery Oil mixed with the oil and it has freed up a lifter.

Absolutely so stupid to not just replace all that stuff. It happend to my wife’s Jeep at 90k. In the early years of my career as a mechanic I was like you, wouldn’t remove the intake or exhaust manifold etc. just pull them out of the way but over the years I’ve learned that it’s best to just remove those items. Less chance breaking things, busting my knuckles, I stay cleaner and when I reassemble there’s a greatly reduced risk of contamination getting in the motor, gaskets not staying in place and so on. I’d rather spend a few more minutes pulling three bolts and completely removing that exhaust to give myself a much nicer work space than be confined by it throughout the repair. But good job 😊

Great video! My 2008 5.3 did this... Called BTR in Texas, they offered a stage 2 cam, lifters, high volume oil pump, pick up tube O ring timing chain and gears, all gaskets, valve seals, new timing cover and delete Solenoid cover plate under the intake... This was a DOD delete kit. Kit aprox $1,100.00 plus tuning $1400.00. My truck had 97,000 miles when I rebuilt top end... Now has 270,000!!!! Still getting 17 to 22 mpg! On those lifters, what happens is the holes clog up and dont allow the oil to fill the chamber. All lifters will come apart in halves if you pull them hard enough. They are sealed together with just the oil. So the reason that one lifter was easy to compress is because there was no oil in it because the hole is clogged. The one that was hard to compress had oil inside still. You can usually clean the lifters and reuse them. Soak them in some berrymans or some gas and make sure the oil passage is clear re assemble it with some oil and it should be good to go

When ever I replaced my lifter about 4 weeks later it did the same thing, same lifter collapsed when it went into V4 mode. The dealer did warranty the head bolts, head gasket and lifter. I spoke to one of the techs and he told me that intake valley cover that controls the oil flow to the lifters will go bad on higher mileage trucks. So I replaced the lifter and called a friend to turn off the V4 mode and 25000 miles later no problem. Great vids by the way man!

My think my 07 Tahoe has a bad lifter smh ticking is pretty loud.. how much would this cost to take to a mechanic? I debating wether to try and fix it my self or take it in
@shannonfrye37973 жыл бұрын
@@beachboi_lb1612 Mechanic quoted me around $2500-3000 to replace all the lifters. I ended up only replacing the entire SIDE that had the bad lifter. I figured if the other side goes bad in the future, I know how to fix it. But before I went in, I had UBD2 codes and a mechanics diagnosis to confirm the stuck lifter. I also tried to swap coil packs, wires, and plugs to rule those out. A ticking could be anything from a loose rocker, a clogged lifter rod, or worse.....the unknown! You can crack it open, but without knowing exactly what to replace, you may end up closing it up and taking it in to the shop anyways. Just saying I had the benefit of knowing 100% what I was going in after. Best of luck with the Tahoe!

@shannonfrye64496 ай бұрын
For a non-professional mechanic like myself - It's possible - just be patient. If you're mechanically inclined, you can do this. Just remember that you will need a torque wrench, new head gasket and some new bolts (Harbor freight and Amazon for me). This can take a shade tree mechanic a little time, so don't plan to tear it down and have it up and running in a few hours. Document and take pictures/video as you go, so you can reference where things came from, and where they go back to. Don't be afraid to stop and go back to KZbin if you get stuck. I also use a cardboard sheet to stick bolts through, to keep them organized and labeled. Or sandwich bags with labels. Prior to this, I had replaced brakes and water pumps, but never anything this detailed. @@mattorendorff8858

Go DOD program that drops cylinders for better gas mileage and more power on demand, reduces oil into lifters when the cylinder is dropped. This causes the lifter to collapse and in a lot of instances cause the fault. That’s why there’s DOD delete products out there to turn off this program. Great video, very informative.

MexiKingiCon My 2000 Silverado use to make sounds exactly 32 seconds after a cold start up. I just got use to it, sold it to my brother it has 300k on it now 👍🏼

Mark hmmm so maybe I shouldn’t be as worried with that noise I’m hearing .. it’s loudest when I come to complete stops and yeah cold starts .. these vortec engines sure are reliable ! Especially if you give them the proper maintenance. My 05 is at 177k

As a certified gm master tech. All of the afm lifters need to be replaced as well as the afm manifold in the valley. Otherwise you will be back in there in less than 6 months.

I second this! Replace the VLOM and the solenoids attached - don't try that funny stuff of just replacing and modifying the gasket. Check your oil pressure relief valve too for good measure to see if its stuck, mine was.
@bobcattech4 жыл бұрын
@@fredobueno I never saw the relief valve stuck but I replaced a shit load of lifters. That was known as 5.3 special #1. In my parts department. Did a bunch of the gen 5 motors as well. Same shit design and the same robot customers that waited til the idiot light came on to tell them when to change the oil. Cant fix stupid.

@@fredobueno Thanks? Where is that oil pressure relief valve.
@fredobueno2 жыл бұрын
@@svieczorek sorry, it’s been so long since this post but it’s at the bottom of the block near where the Oil Filter attaches. On the inside, of course. I did this job at 130K and I’m at 208864 miles today. Still no issues.

In my experience, If it fails silently, just a misfire, usually the cam is OK. On the GM AFM system if they make noise the lifter has turned and broken the basket it rides in from rattling around,99% chance it needs a cam. On the MOPAR system, its usually cylinder 3, the needle bearing in the roller goes bad and ist not an AFM lifter to begin with. AFM lifters are 1,4,6,7. Thats the front and back on the drivers side, and the 2 inside on the passengers side. This is on both GM and the Chrysler Hemi's. I bought a 2 lens camera on Amazon, i can stick it in the plug hole and rotate the crank without pulling and covers. It has a 90 degree cam, you can see valves. I used to do side work for a car dealer, every other dodge truck or chevy had heads coming off. The dealership owner was losing his mind.😂

Great work sir. Mine just started the noise last night. Wished you were my neighbor.
@pg16333 жыл бұрын
Here is the problem you just put a new litfter in with the old ones. Since those lifters are known for failing it is just a after of time before the rest go. You also would need to check all the cam lobes not just that one. The correct way to fix that is to either a dod delete kit. Or replace all the lifters and do a thorough examination of the cam. There is no quick fix for that problem!

Just watching this video for the first time and I wished I found this when I worked on my neighbors truck. Bad lifter thanks to DOD. We ended up deleting the system. Now working on my in- laws Escalade ESV and your LS videos are the best out there! Just the stuff you need to know makes them the best as a lot of us turn wrenches. You know what your doing so keep doing!

Nice video! I’ve read that this damn DOD works using cyl 1-4-6-7, and these would be the ones that would go. I don’t know how expensive these lifters are, but I’d want to replace all of them if I had the time. I only have one noisy lifter thus far, no misfire. Yet.
