Early morning driving on a Sunday has become a way of life since buying my MX5 last year , Living on the edge of the Scottish highlands I can be out of the town and deep into the country within 15 mins and at 6.50am on a Sunday the roads are yours . 2 hours spent hooning across the country and back home before 9 - there is no better way to enjoy driving.

Keep your MX5 for as long as poss. We had ours for 12 years until my wife could no longer climb out due to old hips. My worst motoring decision was selling her (my) 5. Miss it every day, as does she in fairness.

@@kevincoombs7348 Thanks , I intent to , it's my first sports car in 40 years and frankly I'm loving it , 2.0 NC . It's perfectly suited to the narrow twisting back roads up here in NE Scotland. I looked at Boxters and the like but the MX turned out to be ideal. My wife alas , is less then impressed with it so for the time being it's solo trips , something I can live with!

Same with me! I bought a 2007 prht with 9k. Got rid of it this year since they built my 2023 corvette. I drive 7 hours up at 5 am through southern Indiana last Sunday. I, like Mr. Neil Clifford attended Le Mans for the 100th anniversary. Our stories are alarmingly similar: pack up the car, wake before the alarm, 2.30am in my case, and head off into the darkness. The drive across the country to Folkestone from South Wales was easy at that time of day, and the flexi pass system at the tunnel was indeed seamless as long as you have that f***ing code! Pick up some coffee and pastries and get onto the train. Chat with fellow travellers, admire one and others cars, and discuss journey strategy. Onto the Payage roads and it’s lane discipline is brilliant and the service stops although small are clean with good coffee. The journey was a joy, and if you like cars, then a joy made all the more by the Italian, German and even French sports cars making the pilgrimage to the track for the weekend. The race, the night, the atmosphere, the booze and even the incredible access to the pit lounge etc was an experience I’ll not forget any time soon hopefully (Dementia pending of course). What an absolute joy the weekend was. I didn’t even mind Ferrari winning even though I was there supporting Porsche. Brilliant, just brilliant and I recommend it to anyone. Great show Gentlemen, please keep up the good work.

These episodes get better and better. Thank you guys. For indicatory stalks, my favorite is my 89 bentley turbo r. Its metal, heavy, but smoothly slides into its detent. There's no real 'click' but you can certainly feel it engage. I've actually told friends, try the indicator stalk. It's really good. Opposite end of the spectrum was my 93 range rover, which felt like it would break every time you used it. (though it never did).

So much to unpick. Have sent away for First Light, my father was in the Fleet Air Arm in WW2, so it's a must read (thanks Manish). He told me that flying alone at sunrise is pretty special, but driving is almost as good. Love the feeling of being (car/foot/bicycle) in a town or city (esp Amsterdam) as it wakes up, watching the people starting their days from the distance of not being an inhabitant. Quite agree with NC, the early people rule the world, I've always been a lark, mornings are far and away the best time of day. Song: Voces8 singing Underneath the Stars. Heartstopping.

Another brilliant episode !!! And as an American, I'm the 1st to admit I know very little about F1 racing BUT for me (and to celebrate my Scottish heritage) my 2 driver garage would be Jim Clark & Ken Miles. 2nd choice would be Derek Bell & Hurley Haywood. And if you'd like to listen to the perfect CD to drive to, especially on a long moonlit night, doesn't get any better than the expanded edition of Richard Barone's "Cool Blue Halo". 2 more would be Webb Wilder's "It Came from Nashville" and Guadalcanal Diary's "Flip Flop". There were many nights in 1988-89 I'd blast triple digits on the Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains without lights on moonlit nights in my 1976 Datsun 280 Z.

Great show as usual. Funny that the indicator stalk topic came up. Bought a Kia Seltos a while back and the stalks always felt light to touch but just this week I began to wonder are they just light or are they a bit flimsy? They are pitched at lady drivers in this part of the world so maybe delicate is a better word for them. At least our car doesn't have the full-on widescreen touchscreen controlling everything else like the latest model. We've already had the media screen replaced under warranty and touch screens just aren't nice to operate on the fly.

Another brilliant podcast! Agree completely on the UK roads. 1 frustration you missed, is this new way of re-surfacing roads that the councils in Berkshire are approving; throwing a shed tonne of stones on the road, and letting the cars press them in/road sweep. Absolutely horrendous. Who decided that was a good idea?! The other point re: early morning drives - personally I think there’s a strange sense of ownership of the day/road/countryside when no one’s else is around. Bliss. ❤

Bring back toggles. With the storks convo, they need to feel heavy, cold and make a satisfying noise. The worst part of my AM is the indicator is this weak plastic cheap feeling cheap sounding cheap clicking indicator that feels like it’ll snap off. Contrary to the absolutely gorgeously engineered engine oil cap which is a joy to undo and tighten when checking the oil and the lovely billeted metal bonnet & roof struts…. Why couldn’t they have made the touch point of the indicators metal like those and the dials for the aircon etc 😩
