Great conversation, gents! The thing that annoys me (and I'm speaking from personal experience, and referencing someone in my collecting circle) is people telling other people what they should and shouldn't do as collectors (essentially, how to collect). I buy, I sell, and I collect. I'm a collector at heart... but my collection should earn its keep. If the price is right, and it's an item I can do without, then I'll let it go. I'll collect MY way. If YOU don't sell, then that's absolutely fine by me... but don't look down your nose at me and others for doing so. If a collector wants to spend their wages/wealth on building their collection, then you do you. I prefer for my collection to be self-sustaining. I pay storage to house it... and the money for that, and for future purchases, sure as Hell isn't coming from my pocket! It's the 'red paperclip' effect. Give me a minor league scrub, and let me turn that into a Babe Ruth. However you collect... HAPPY COLLECTING! 👍👍👍

Love the conversation! If collectors are acquiring cards there needs to be sellers. It sounds like both of you are non judgemental in your approach to the hobby. I appreciate your wisdom. Good luck on that collection!

I don’t begrudge anyone who flips, collects, and sells/collects, as to each their own. I guess I’m in the collector category because I don’t sell any of my cards. I’m very picky on what I buy, so my collection is very focused. Every card I buy, I truly want in my collection so I couldn’t fathom selling it.

Mike and Graig that was a great episode. The conversation and thoughts were a treat. I have agreed with Graig that if is something that you rebuy later down the road and value is there for selling it do it. I sold my grail card (Graig don't kill me) '54 Banks PSA 3 because the price was right ( during the peak of the hobby ) at the moment and I knew I was patient I could get another. I took that money and got another Grail T206 Chase SGC 3 and later I found a guy wanting to buy a new motorcycle and he was selling his part of his collection and had a '54 Banks again. This time PSA 5.

I’m a collector through and through. Of the few times that I sold something, I had instant regret. It’s something that I can’t get over. Even if it is selling something that isn’t a part of my PC. Before I began collecting vintage, I was strictly an Astros PC guy (also some non Astro player PC- David Wright, Evan Longoria, Grady Sizemore). So, anything that wasn’t in those categories, I would just give away. Looking back on all the Judges and Ohtanis that I just gave away, it hurts a little. Just didn’t appreciate that stuff. Now, I’ve completely taken a different take on it and keep EVERYTHING. Loved this episode.

Awesome conversation, truly appreciate the mention. One of the best topics for the times. Sometimes you just have to focus, can’t have it all! Can’t wait to see about the collection possible purchase.

Really enjoy the content here. In my opinion, what anybody thinks about my collecting style or decisions is irrelevant. All you social media folks are way to super sensitive to what someone says.. Be and do what brings joy to you in the hobby. I guess I'm saying be free to enjoy a hobby in what time the lord blesses you with.

Awesome story! Can't wait to see how it plays out, Mike. Good luck! Graig is such a great guy. It's awesome seeing him on your channel. I'm glad to see the "Legend of the Basement Collection" lives on! I'm still so happy I got to be a part of it. Awesome episode, Mike!

Great stuff have collected from packs through the 60s to the 80s but as retirement came on 10 years ago changed my view . And work on only small goals and limits. But i had all these singles and star that don't fit my goals now and i grade and sell these and use the money for the items i want

This was a great discussion Mike and you know that I have been critical of you in the past. I hear where you are coming from, but I fear that your core as “Baseball Collector” is what made you and your wholesome content what it is and why it is so loved. As soon as you bring money and selling into your content, it’s going to change how you’re viewed and your integrity unfortunately. So many of these influencers are always trying to steer people into the direction of selling product and I fear that’s what now happened to you. I watch these guys who are selling cards and it’s a completely different animal from a real collector. It appears that you are now trying to capitalize on your fame to make money which is sadly the dark road so many influencers have gone down in the past. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s just not what you have always stood for.

Interesting insights. I have met less than 5 people that collect and never sell. Orlando was a dealer and sold cards his whole life. I think he is like many in the hobby. One point, Orlando is a better person than most in the hobby

Great content, you gotta rip the band aid off and sell cards that you have that are readily available to buy your grail cards.

Massively stupid question. People flip and open products they don’t collect and even sell doubles and triples of things they do collect. Really bad take

Isn't currency a magical thing? We can trade things we possess but are willing to give up for currency and then go and use that acquired currency to trade for things we want.

Enticing episode, can't wait to see the collection. I've been selling cards since 1984, and still have cards from1967 & 68 that I got from packs. Also have my Dad's cards from the early 1950's (Exhibits). I'm actually working the Dallas Card Show with my LCS and not selling my own cards now.

"Using" the hobby to fund your collection feels different than selling cards in which you have less interest.
@averagejoecardcollector61599 ай бұрын
I would actually go all the way to the other end of this spectrum. If you don’t trade “ trading cards “ you are not a real collector
@CVMGAM9 ай бұрын
If the collection has already been sold, it's already been cherry picked or mentally cherry picked for the resale. It won't be the same exact collection. If there are doubles, you'll be getting the worse of the two. If I were you, I'd start right now getting mentally ready to not get this one.
@CVMGAM9 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have the $ and the will to hop on a plane to get what you want, so why not become an Alan "MR Mint" Rosen, and put yourself out there that you are willing to buy collections & do the things that you have been talking about ?

Ok… I have to ask since you’re part of Chasing Cardboard. Isn’t worse to sell content and information for money than to sell a card? Good luck on the $108 a year streaming content.
