I loved that vid. Nice to know there are other wood foragers about. That satisfaction from heating and cooking on it goes way beyond ‘saving a few bob’. Thanks for sharing that.

@@sandydogy Hi, I actually grew up next to a beach where people still collect sea coal to this day. It doesn't burn as well as normal coal as it leaves a lot of unburnt material when the fire goes out. It was traditionally used to 'bank' the fire (keep it burning slowly overnight ). The flour was just to give a crust to the liver. Glad you enjoyed it!

I know th vid is a bit old but can I ask about the stove….what make is it and do you still like it? I’m a huge fan of wood fired cooking and 90% of cooking I do is open fire or wood stove with oven above but I’ve never bought a range so I can cook on top too. That one looks like a beauty with rope sealed doors and decent sized fire chamber and window. …love it! 😍

Hi, the model name is the Victoria and it came from a company called modern stoves. It's not a cast iron stove but rather it's steel that has been welded together. I think they are made in Bulgaria. For baking using the oven you need to get a really good fire going but for cooking on the stovetop it's surprising how quickly it gets hot from just a small fire. I am very happy with it and best of all it was only £750 delivered which is a fraction of the price of a cast iron stove. I chose it because of the large window.

Call your local tree surgeons, offer to help out for the firewood from the job or just tell them to drop wood off if they need a place to dump it. In a city there should be plenty of surgeons wanting rid of it

It was a driftwood post. I would imagine that at some point in it's life it was treated with a preservative such as creosote or similar. Drift wood that has been in the sea a while tends to have the chemicals pulled out by the salt water.

I thought driftwood was really bad for furnaces due to the salt content retaining moisture in the wood. Reduces the life of the furnace.

Maybe it does but everything in life is a gamble. I have been burning it for years without a problem but maybe my chimney liner may need earlier replacement than it might have.

The salt is also supposed to corrode stainless steel chimney liners but people have been burning driftwood for millennia and I guess there is a cost to pay for everything in life.

Judging by this wood it's been tanalised. I'd opt for natural wood only Eg fallen trees that drift to shore not treated wood.
