I so agree with you about looking for Box Turtles, or most any turtle or tortoise in general ! My entire property is fenced with a 12 foot concrete block fence, so I know they can never get OUT, but, when one goes out for a walk from the normal space, it is scary. While I was gone to our son's Wedding in the US, the guys that were watching our place found a Florida Soft Shell Turtle in my Swimming pool! She had left her huge pond and gone to my personal pond. Glad they found her before the high Chlorine bothered her.

belizeguy That’s crazy! Glad she’s ok. And yes, they are extraordinarily good at hiding. It’s no wonder people rarely find turtles out on land. They are just so well camouflaged.

@@ShelledReptiles She is fine. She must have gone wandering just after dark, for what ever reason. My friend was walking by the pool just after Midnight and saw something different in the pool. She was asleep on the steps which are shallow water, so he scooped her up with the pool leaf net and took her back to her place. No skin issues at all, which is something I am always concerned about with the 5 Softies. Always something, Right?

I've got two hatchlings I've set up a safe habitat for one of which was rescued from my neighbors pool. I had an adult come along this morning and made me realize I need to fix the whole fence to keep others from getting trapped inthe pool as well.

See if the water is running down the rock you have it splashing against and draining outside of the pond liner. That happened with my pond where it was running down the rock I had it hitting and it drained down to the outside of my pond liner. Hope you get it fixed cause I know how annoying that is

I just have a male and femal box turtle since May, I have been let them stay in outside enclosre 8 ft X 8 Ft. I move them in side last tueday since it is about 50 degree at night outside. I has been 5 days. Everything looks normal, BUT THEY HAVEN'T EATEN FOR 5 DAYS!. HELP!!

Shelled Reptiles I have a quick question. I would love to hear your opinion! Are box turtles picky when it comes to mating, like do the enclosure condition have to be perfect? Does humidity or substrate materials matter? Thanks for your time! Hopefully you can give me a little insight for when I actually try to breed.

William Lewis Yes and no. Males done really seem to care, but females are very picky and won’t want to breed or lay eggs unless the enclosure is adequate

I mean I’m glad they are taken care of but you should leave wild box turtles alone it’s illegal to take them out of the wild. They should be left alone. When kept in captivity they forget the wild habits. They are already a protected species and hoarding a bunch of them in captivity isn’t helping the wild population. They can never be released and expect them to survive.

Bro, man, I love your enclosure and all but please leave any eastern box turtles out in the wild so they can reproduce. They're on the decline in some zones and my states DNR has a reporting website so they can be studied. They'll forever be trying to get home since you took them out of the wild.
