1996. I was 13 years old and I was begging my dad all year for one. He kept saying no. Birthday came around, no Saturn. Then it was Christmas of 96 and not a single gift was wrapped in the shape of a video game console box. I knew I wasn't going get it and I was at peace with it. I still had my Genesis to keep my company. Then I get a gift that's in the shape of a shoebox. Maybe it was Airwalks and that would kinda make up for it. I tear it open and it's old pair of shoes my dad use to wear. There was a note that said "put these on and walk to the hall closet". I didn't put them on but I went to the hall closet and there was a wrapped gift in the shape of console box. Could it be what I wanted and begged for all year?? There was a note that said something like "This MEGA gift is out of this world" and my dad kept trying to get me to guess and would say "MEGA... Out of this world...." I was so excited I couldn't respond and I tore that paper off so fast and there it was. My Sega Saturn. Then another gift that I unwrapped and it was the 3 free games with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighting 2, and Daytona USA. I also got another game called Solar Eclipse. I remember liking that game a lot as a kid, but playing it now... meh haha. Even though I don't have it on video, for as long as I live I will always remember that Christmas and will be grateful towards my dad for making a fun game out of it because he knew how badly I wanted it. You're very lucky your dad recorded a lot of your childhood. I wish I had that.

I just turned 16 by the time it was Christmas of 96, I ended up getting an N64 that following summer June of 97, i wanted a Saturn but 4 player controller ports and lots of little cousins that came over my house all the time made the final decision...1997 was the best summer ever

Yes very lucky. We never had the money for a camcorder (and so my dreams of being a stop motion animator went down the drain). In my whole childhood, there were only two videos of me, recorded by the school. My mum lost one of them, and the other one she left in the cellar to go mouldy and unplayable. Crazy to think how different it is now that everyone has a videocamera in their pocket and can record everything.

I really wanted a Saturn when I was a kid, but never ended up getting one since I chose to wait for the N64. It wasn't until I was in college when I finally got a Saturn and I realized I definitely missed out. However it was't until about a decade ago when I discovered the Japanese library and definitely felt like I missed out. It's amazing you got to experience both libraries of games when you were a kid when it was all brand new, truly special. Anytime I see one of your videos about Saturn I eventually dig mine up and play it. Thanks for keeping this forgotten golden age of 2D/semi-2D gaming alive!

Another great video. I remember reading the book Console Wars and Tom Kalinske fought Sega of Japan against the surprise launch but they made the decisions. They saw the early success of Playstation in Japan and thought they had to do something drastic and launch early in the US. Made a lot of retailers that didn't get early shipments upset with them.

It’s unbelievable that your dad managed to import so many Japanese games. I can’t even imagine how expensive and rare they would be back then. It must be the greatest feeling in the world to play some games months before the US release. I remember when Kingdom Hearts 1.5HD released on PS3 it inspired me to learn Japanese. Prior to that release, it was a region locked exclusive in Japan.

I traded in my entire Sega collection at Funcoland for Saturn. That was the only way I could afford it. I never regretted doing that. Saturn was never going to be the headliner, but I didn't mind. I think I enjoyed being part of something different and relished in the fact that my console was so different. Great video. Dad really took you along for the coolest ride. I accidentally walked into the surprise launch of the Saturn in May of 1995. I was just checking things out at a local Toys R' Us and there it was, the Sega Saturn. I immediately purchased it and while I was checking out, there must have been a Sega rep there, because she had walked up an congratulated me for purchasing the console. It's still one of my favorite consoles.

Thanks for this Tyler. I never knew the imports they had... definitely would have been interested. After PS1 hit and i got hooked on 3D gaming though, with games like Twisted metal, Tekken 2, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider idk if i would have had any interest for years later. But now, looking back. Yeah it definitely would have blown me away to have those JP imports and Metal Slug. Shoot, Metal Slug alone might have justified the $400 + price tag with how much i would have replayed it. Great episode as usual.

Every time I watch a KZbin video that refers to SEGA Saturn's 3D prowess, and a person says that the 3D ability was thrown in at the last minute, it makes me sick. I also hate how people blame those "last minute" additions as part of the reason the Saturn was hard to program for due to a complex board of chips. SEGA ALWAYS wanted the Saturn to be a 2D/3D powerhouse. Most of the tech SEGA was banking on was responsible for their arcade legacy: Virtua Fighter, Virtual Racer, Virtua Cop, and other AM1/AM2 games. SEGA wanted the 2D powerhouse ability to finally do justice to the awesome arcade legacy as SEGA AGES was definitely already in mind to show off great home versions of SEGA's super scalers. I like your channel. I'll be watching.

The Saturn was cool, and had a ton of great Japanese games, but back then (in my area anyway) the cost of importing titles was prohibitively expensive - just one imported game from Japan would easily cost as much as 2 normal games off the shelf.

I never thought about the Saturn being designed for 2d. The change to 3d kinda put me off gaming for a while and I’m still kinda split. I feel like my gaming is always retro, which for me is almost always 2d or current which usually isn’t. I need to dive into the Saturn lineup deeper. I’ve played the most popular games but I’ve never dug deep.

The Saturn although more expensive at launch tha. The PS1, it actually isnt quite as bad as you initially think. The Saturn had built in memory..no need for a memory card,a game included and in some countries we also got a superior SCART cable video. PS1 you needed to buy a game, memory card and a cable if required..add it all up it's not that different.
